I bought a 2011 Genesis 4.6 (black and black) back in March and although I was reading posts even before I bought the car I am just getting around to registering. I went through the same process in deciding to buy this car as probably most of you. I looked at BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, and others. What really turned me off about BMW was going to BimmerFest and reading what owners said about their cars (brought me to tears). I read all the reviews and watched all the videos. I thought I would give Hyundai a try.
I thought since they were trying to establish a mark in the upscale market they probably were trying harder and definitely priced their car better. People refer to Hyundai as an upstart company. Actually they are a large heavy manufacturing company meaning they have a good QA program, a large engineering staff, computer modeling and design, component testing, specification writing and all of that. The Koreans are very proud of them.
I have not had any problems with the car in 12,000 miles except a nail in a tire. Everything seems to work fine. Since I have had it I changed the oil twice, once at 500, then again at 7,000. I also changed the differential fluid at 500 miles(the differential has a drain plug which is nice), and it seemed somewhat dirty even at that point. In addition, I have changed the air filter and cleaned the MAF. I have been researching on how to change the transmission fluid being a believer in regular transmission servicing. I use Amsoil XL oil and Wix filters. The o-ring with the Wix filters is too fat to work for the filter drain plug, but one does not need to drain the filter anyway before you take it apart. I just leave it alone.
I've been all over and under the car and think it is really nicely designed. One heck of a lot of fuses though located all over the place (I need to make sure I have some spares).
I am very happy with the car but think the seats are a little spartan and the ESC is a little over bearing. By the way, ArmorAll for Leather (spray) does wonders for the seat leather. I am debating on whether or not to use ArmorAll on the dash. I used it on the door seals and when a little got on the dash plastic in spots it turned it very dark and shiny.
I also wish there was an ECU re-flash program out there to get more out of the engine and to slap down the ESC. The transmission is really slow shifting at WOT, but I suppose they programmed it that was to protect it. I looked at getting an after-market cat back system like MagnaFlow (sp?), but sort of decided against it due to the noise or drone. I definately think Borla is too loud, for me anyway.
