No sound out of speakers

bnajack,

When you say you had the entire audio system replaced, what exactly do you mean? Was it just the head unit?

I have had the exact same issues as you to the point where the car was exchanged for another, and the head unit was switched on both cars and the problems continued.

I was scheduled to have the head unit and amp replaced. When I went to get the car, the service guy said he didn't replace the amp because the one they were sent was so different from the one presently on the car, he thought it was a mistake. He told me he would call Hyundai about it.

My car malfuntioned again and when we called, he said it was stressed to him that both components must be replaced (amp and head unit), saying that the amp was not just an amp (whatever that means).

About 2 weeks ago I had the amp changed as well. So far, it's been working fine, and i'm cautiously optimistic.

I don't know if it's any consolation, but I'm sort of glad it's happening to more owners, not because I want them to experience my frustration, but then I know they'll come up with a solution. Plus...I began to wonder if they thought I was crazy because the intermittent nature of this problem meant it wasn't always malfuntioning when I brought the car in.

Good luck to you.

So was that the problem you "almost" described to us a while back? The one you didn't want to "detail" because you were still in negotiations/resolution?
Or am I thinking of someone else?
Thx.

NOLa,

As far as I know, they replaced the head unit and amplifier since they said it cost $4600 if it was not covered under warranty.

It was the same issue. NOla and jcook are wife and hubby. No electronic issues since this last trip to the service department, however we did experience the "loping" effect from a trip down to New Orleans. Car seemed to develop a bounce when going over a bridge. More curious than aggravating tho....

Thanks. I was waiting for details, now I/we know.
:)

I have this same problem with a V8 w/tech. I thought the IPod was the issue but I ruled that out and the blackberry.

I had the software update-did not fix. I noticed a few things: The FM screen had no data when the sound goes out. the blue background is there but no dynamic data like station info. Also, when I push the voice button on the sterring wheel i get a message that says "SDS preparing in the background. Try again later.

I think it is a software load timing issue and voice acitvation may be the culprit or FM/HD.

I will be asking the dealer to repalce entire system. I will try to take pics and post next time it happends-once every 10-20 starts. BTW-If I turn off the car and wait approx 7-10 min. the systems reboots and works again.

robertevanssr-

I experienced te exact same thing...car wouldn't tune to AM or FM during one of the malfunctions. The absence of sound in the audio system was always accompanied by other malfunctions that were not always the same each time...one time the DIS knob didn't work, but all other times it did. The CD worked sometimes, sometimes it didn't. I also saw the "SDS" message one time when experiencing audio problems, then never again on subsequent malfunctions.

The good news is, ever since the head unit AND amp were replaced, I have not had any more problems. They cannot just replace the head unit (where the CD is inserted). In both cars, the head unit was replaced and problems continued...in the second car they eventually did both and since January 5, I have had no more problems.:)

After replacing the head unit and amp three weeks ago, my car began acting up again, same as before. I took delivery in November and the system has been locking up since day one.

The dealer got the problem to occur in the presence of the Hyundai Field Engineer. He said to change the head unit and amp again. As they were removing the old units, they noticed my display was on even though it was supposedly disconnected. They now believe the problem is in my wiring harness.

This makes more sense to me than anything they have said so far. The chance of having three defective amps and two head units are too remote. I will let everyone know how it goes.

bnajack,

Sorry you are still having problems.

Just in case this is helpful in any way...the first thing they tried in my car was to replace some wiring and I believe it was in the steering column due to the fact that along with no audio, the controls on the steering wheel didn't function. The head unit was replaced a couple of times.

When I went in for the head unit to be replaced, they were supposed to change out the amp. When the car was returned to me, I was told they the amp was NOT replaced because the amp that was sent was so different from the one on the car, they thought the wrong one was sent and didn't install it.

They made some calls (and the radio did it again) and they were told to install the amp. It was installed and I'm keeping my fingers crossed 'cause I've had no further problems.

My impression is the amp that was eventually installed was different than the one originally on the car, though to be honest, I'm not 100% certain. Maybe Hyundai did send the wrong one at first, and another one was sent-or maybe the replacement one is different.

Of course, I don't have to tell you, that because this problem comes and goes, they work on it, the car has audio and they believed they fixed it. I even had them call me to get the car and as they drove it out to put it in the lot, it wasn't working again. Another time I drove it to the dealership with no audio, they witnessed it (thank goodness) and after writing up the service ticket, they went to bring it in to the service area and it was working as they pulled it in. I imagine it is hard to diagnose something when it's not broke at the time.

NOLa,

Thanks for the encouragement.

Franklin Hyundai has been great through all this. The intermittent nature of the problem is making them crazy, too. I know it is hard for them to fix something when it is working.

You are correct though, in that they replace, repair, etc. and the system works perfectly in their care. They assume the problem is solved and return the car to service only to have me show up later with it not working, again.

After my call with them yesterday, they say the wiring harness is ok and they are replacing the amp, again. Since the amp replacement worked for you, hopefully it will for me, as well.

I have had a situation with my rear speaker volume literally vanishing on XM. It happened yesterday, in fact. With a dvd-a, it seemed ok, but when I switched to XM and moved the speakers to the rear, I could barely hear anything.

This has happened 3-4 times since I've gotten the car (around XMas), and always goes away and is fine the next time I drive. Seems to me to be an XM issue more than a stereo issue.

I got my car back last week after they replaced the amp and head unit. After four days, so far so good. Normally, it would have locked up by now. I hope this fix works long term.

Update for "No sound out of speakers"
They replaced the head unit and the problem persisted. Next, they did a software update and the problem persisted (the dealer also put the old head unit back in). Today (2/16/09) they replaced the amp. Hopefully this works (third time is supposed to be a charm). I asked what's next if this doesn't work. I was told they would bring it back and have the regional tech work with the dealer's tech to diagnose the problem. We'll see.

You guys that are getting the "head unit" replaced, a couple of questions: what is that? and what was your original problem: no sound at all, or intermittant problems?
thanks

When I refer to the "head unit”, I'm referring the CD unit in the dash. I was told that is the brains for the DIS (driver information system). My problem was (hopefully now resolved) the speakers would not work some of the time. I would start the car and no sound. The no sound applied to all components, stereo, navigation, phone, everything. After turning off the car and letting it sit for 5 minutes or more the sound would be working. The sound never quit when I was driving and it would never start back up while I was driving if it was not working to begin with.
Andy

It's been almost two weeks since they changed the amp and head unit. So far, everything works perfectly.

Update: It has been a little over 2 weeks since they replaced the amp and no problems. I hope and believe the problem has been resolved.

3 days ago I had the "no sound" problem. Everything seemed to work but no sound from the speakers in radio, bluetooth, navigation or voice command modes. Parked the car, then when I came back, everything was working normally. 1st time in 13,000 miles this happened.

Then, for 2 days, seemed normal. Tonight, started the car and the radio was on, but could not control the volume, it was stuck at medium level. I would turn the power off and the screen would say power was off, but radio kept on going. Turned the car on and off, and things were normal for about 30 minutes. Then, the volume was stuck again. When I turned the car off, the radio kept on going. Turned car on and off about 10 times until I finally got the radio to stop. During all this time, I tried to reset the radio settings to factory setting, but that would not help. It's going to the dealer tomorrow.

I got this 3.8 Tech Pak in August and had the TSB 63? done in November. Other than this and the loss of Navigation data, no problems. Best car I've ever had.

To Bnajack, andy, robertevanssr, Richard Ft. Lauderdale, BaywayRic,

All of you folks appear to have the same problem with the voice activation feature, ie. either voice activation doesn't work at all, or if you press the voice activation button on the steering wheel, the sound system goes mute... permanently. The only means to clear the problem is to turn ignition off and restart the car.

I'm interested in what was the final resolution to your problem...
a) Software TSB updates only.
b) Replacement of Head unit only
c) Replacement of Amp unit only
d) Replacement of BOTH Head and Amp unit
e) Software TSB updates and Replacement of BOTH Head and Amp unit

I had the problem for a while now, and just avoided the problem by not using the voice activation feature. Just went for an oil change and mentioned the "No Sound Out of Speakers" problem. The dealer performed the software TSB updates. Things were fine for 2 days... now I' m exactly back to square one with the system going mute once I touch the voice activation button on the steering wheel.
