If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I'm reading one of the flaws of the genesis coupe is no sport mode. But I thought the manual paddle shift mode on the 6 speed auto is a sport mode? Are they talking only on the manual? If the paddles on the auto aren't a sport mode? Why are they there? Thanks in advance for your answers.

I dont understand what you mean by "sport mode"? If you mean a "sport mode" button you can press to instantly improve the cars power, handling and braking?

The paddle shifters are there to give the driver the option to shift gears manually. Hmm, I guess you can call this paddle shift option a "sport mode" no?

if you want to 'sport', buy the manual transmission.
the paddle shifters do not convert a slushbox into a manual transmission..
And why do the track models even come with an automatic? Never seen a racecar with a slushbox...

Many of the major car magazines are claiming the transmission is too tame but when I read its always about the stick. But they always find a way of putting the auto in the mix when that's not the car being tested. (car mags suck anyway) in my case the auto in a sport car is important because I'm disabled and drive with hand controls. These are the few that most of you forget about when you dog autos. Lol. Anyway the paddle shift is the perfect tranny for me. Sport mode buttons and systems are good for me because I can tune my own tranny to operate 2 ways. But there are a few autos out there are just there for the sake of pushing buttons. Transmission ratios don't change. But others actually kick in a sport mode like most Nissan and BMW products. Being that the genesis coupe has the awesome zf-6 auto. I would think that engaging into manual. Will boost the tranny into sport mode and damping in the tranny would stiffen. Like in the 370? So I was asking just to see if anyone who owns this car feels those differences in the car when the paddles are engaged?

This one goes to Franken speed. Truth is most of you want manuals. But when I'm at the track. Most of the wanna be racers have manuals and are blowin out there tranny's in a heartbeat cuz they can't keep up with the speed shift. The 4 speed semi auto was a legend in Chevy street racers in the 70's semi auto cars can be tuned to accomplish things that a manual wouldn't because the semi will drop the clutch according to the way you are driving everytime. So it relieves a Lil bit of the burden when it chalks up to pink slips. If ur nervous in a race and you are not precise on that clutch? It can cost u your ride. So a well tuned semi auto is a good sport choice. But there are paddle shifts designed just to have that feeling of changing your own gear when you are really truly not. And there is a real saddle shift which is a manual/auto clutch with auto mode. Like the dsg. Which is the type of transmission in formula 1 race cars. So its not all about manuals as you know them in your everyday production car. There are so many valid tranny applications. But just the ones that are "the trend of the posers"! Lol.

Haha, so the market adapted for bad drivers...
Maybe i am old school, but manual transmissions are a lot more fun to drive than automatics. Need to say, i'm from germany, we learn on manuals over there, automatics are not that common. Can I shift faster than some auto boxes? Probably not, don't care, though.
We're talking about the Genesis Coupe, not 100k racecars or exotics here.
Paddleshifters are great if mated to the right transmission, the Hyundai paddle shifters are mated to the automatic transmission (granted, the ZF 6 speed is nice) . I drove the 3.8 with automatic and tried the paddles, similar to the 'autostick' offered on other Hyundai's it is quite slow to react. Was not impressed.
And if you are not sure that you can drive your car to win, then don't race.
You are talking about drag racing, right?
Not my cup of tea anyways.

I'm not sure if this is what you might be thinking need4speed but to throw in my two cents, The Mini Cooper is 4cyl Turbocharged and it has a "Sport Mode." What the Mini's "Sport Mode" does is temporarily raise the boost from the turbo to give improved performance at the cost of efficiency. Might be what you are referring to.

Well foe anyone that may pass in here and find my legit question turn lame wit dumb answers. Car and driver just posted a review on the auto. So those who are considering or needing an automatic. Will like wat I learned. The paddle shift is excellent quality in grand touring applications and taking the twisties so well that it felt like a solid 1g on the road. On the track. The paddle lacks dual clutch or rev match downshift which makes the stock tranny. Needing tuning which was what I was looking for. On the track the auto is not as accurate so the manual was rated better dor racing in this situation. I hope hyundai upgrades the tranny b4 2nd gen changes. The auto is still awesome and quikr on thequartr tthan the maual. Well I hope mt thumbs down blog helped someone in either there tranny decision or car buying purchase.

1st off I know how to drive manuals. I learned stick in a 240z at age 10 in the mountains of puerto rico. But now I'm disabled and drive an automatic cuz I have to. DSG type trannys are solid tough race machines. And other paddles. I hit speeds of 170 mph come to sudden slow downs and whip turns get back up speed all with one hand on a steering wheel one finger shifting. And one other hand controling gas and brake. Ill drag 4 fun but the races I do for pinks or cash will be mapped out and the rest I won't discuss. The sensativity of the auto is important for me. That's why the only thing ur answers are doin is givin me an itch in my ass. But if you wanna race. Ill even be nice. Ill race you in my altima fwd sport sedan. And we can see how much you'll like the joy of driving mr fharvegnugen or however you spell it. And yeah I been to germany. I have family living there for 20 years now serving us military. I understand german culture as my step grandfather was german RIP. I luv this hyundai. I wasn't attacking it. Just needed a question answered bout the tuning. But I think ill fix it by getting the maserati program and see if it will work in the gen tranny.

Thanks johnny k. It was close to what I was trying to find out. But my new post about car and driver was closer to it. Now I know that I'm going to have to completely re map the tranny program on the gen auto. If I'm gonna race it. Just clarifying I luv the gen coupe. Not criticising the tranny.

No problem need4speed, glad you found what you were looking for :D

My take on the Manual vs. Auto debate that has started is this:

Manuals are by far more fun for those who know how to drive them / can drive them. However, the newer higher-end autos can outperform the best manual driver with dual-clutch technology.

I have driven the 3.8 GT Auto and my 2.0T Track. In my experience the manual performed far better, however, I have been driving manuals every since I got my license and have only driven peddle shifters a few times in my life. What I will say however is that the Genny's Semi-Auto was much better than the semi-auto in my fiance's RSX. Personally I love the clutch on my Genny, it disengages 1/4 of the way down, makes for extremely fast shifting.

There was a discussion a while back regarding this and if I recall correctly there is a replacement clutch in the works (aftermarket of course) that will improve the performance of the Genny's Auto. Might be worth looking into.

I feel you. If I had use of my legs id be in a manual. When I use to walk I drove a 280z but now I can't walk so now I'm just trying to find the best paddleshift that will somewhat give me the feel of a manual. Surprisingly. I found one that revs hard like a manual. The 370z. With sport mode. Now I'm stuck. Overall. I like the genesis coupe better. But the 370 performance took the budget sports car to a whole new level. Its more like a porsche than a nissan. Right now I have an 05 g35 but want to now try something new.anyway I discuss my dilemma in my thread torn between 2loves. There are some great ? Hyundai will have my luv n utmost respect for steppin up where toyota and honda and in a way nissan didn't. The 4 seat gt is still my favorite style of car and in this. Right now. Under 45k. Hyundai is king.

Somehow my sentence cut. I said no matter what I choose in the end. Hyundai is still inthe end as a 4seat coupe.

if you want to 'sport', buy the manual transmission.

I'll race you any day of the week with the paddle shifters against the manual.

If you want a slow reacting slapstick, sportauto, sportronic or semi-auto then try the one in a Mazda P5. The paddle shifters in the wife's 2.0T react much quicker. It is still not manual and I still love manual in lots of situations....like offroading in the Tacoma or anywhere in it for that matter. An auto on that 4 cyl with 32" tires would be murder on that poor little motor. Just like always, one thing cannot cover everything for everyone. All depends on preference and intended use.

My friend bought the 2.0T automatic and after he drove my manual, he tried making arrangements to get a manual with the dealer. His impressions are that the paddles are not changing speeds quick enough, and that the car feels on an automatic transmission even if you have a little "control" over the speed shifts. This is just a personal impression. In any ways the Gen Coupe is a great car if you look at performance and efficiency versus price, and the discussion about transmission is just detail. Buy what you feel good in. This is still a 30K$ investment!
