Not a great morning

Well, if you want your car to stay in one piece, you could always get yourself one of these: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee3L9BQQ4Gs&feature=player_detailpage"]Trunk Monkey[/ame].

Yep!! That sucks!!! Nothing I hate worse than a freakn theif. One of the many reasons I moved to a small town. The farther away from the city job just means the more one on one time with your Genny!

Great video's guys!!! It made me feel better!

It's time to pull out that 9mm you have hiding under your bed--

It's in a parking area right between two long rows of town homes. These guys must have had balls to do this right in plain sight like that.. unfortunately they got away with it.

I'm definitely going to look into wheel locks now, but after googling it and reading up a bit it seems like it would just be a minor deferent. However I suppose every little bit helps. What I would really like now is some kind of movement alarm. Hindsight is always 20/20 I suppose.

what you need is a pitbull and a 9 millimeter, oh wait you said town-home not trailer park; my bad.

Any way I feel for ya, I've been broken into before and it just sucks.....

Wow.. very sorry to hear. Reminds me of the guy a couple years ago who had his Nissan stripped in his own driveway overnight.

I'm not making light of the situation, but I can't believe they stole the Dunlops.

I had it happen to me many years ago and it was a pain.

They took the Dunlops to protect the rims, sort of like the plastic peel-off covering on new stuff.

Seriously, it's amazing that anyone could get away with this. I had my Jeep broken into years ago. They didn't even take anything - left the darn cell phone on the front seat - but it was a pain getting the window replaced.

So early this morning I leave my house to head off to another day at work. I just glanced at my car briefly and noticed that something seemed a little bit off.

So I walk up to it and what do I find? My car floating on two coke crates with all four wheels gone, lug nuts strewn across the ground.

For a little info, I'm living in a town house community in a quiet neighborhood, pretty off the beaten path. After the cops came they told me that a Nissan Altima had been hit just a week prior down the street (home owners association never informed anyone about that.) My Genesis is also surrounded by some BMWs, Acuras, etc - yet I was the one that was hit.

Not a good morning :(

Sorry boss, that must be a horrible feeling!!!! i want them dead, i want their family dead, i want them to die and i hope they burn in hell!!!!!

Have you gotten replacement tires/wheels yet? What was the estimate on any other damages this 'jacking' may have caused? And I guess the main question is are you still parking in that same lot?

I just spoke to someone at the body shop today about the estimate.

First off he told me he looked up the VIN and it didn't say that I had TPMS, so he didn't include it . I politely informed him that yes, my car had the tire pressure monitoring system. He said 'oh, let me redo this estimate then' and finally told me that the total was around $2950 (I forget the exact number) and that he was going to send that up to state farm.

Apparently no damage to the car.. but $3,000 for four wheels with tires? That seems terribly expensive to me. I'm just going to be paying my flat deductible, but still..

the TPMS issue bothered me though. It makes me think they don't have a clue what they're doing, and I might have to find a new body shop for the future. I'm expecting everything to be done this coming tuesday (taking exactly two weeks since it happened.)

Wow, that does seem high. I have seen Genesis take-offs on ebay for ~$700 and new tires will run you another ~$1000. I suspect rims from the factory have a high markup on them. Sounds like a good time to get some nice rims to me.

I too think that is very high. I would estimate about $500 per wheel/tire for a total of 2K which would include TPMS and labor.

I certainly would have issues with them not knowing you had TPMS. I thought almost all cars came with that option these days as a requirement by law (fallout from the Firestone/Ford Explorer fiasco years ago). I guess if you end up allowing them to do the work, your first stop after picking the vehicle up should be a Hyundai dealership for a checkup. Might not be a bad idea also to let the insurance company know that you are a little leary about the repairs. Since the insurance company ultimately is in control of paying for them, they may have the ability to recommend another outfit. Hell, after they get that estimate, they may want to find another place. Good luck!

Same thing happened to my Vette when I left the car outside my gf's place one night.
Lowlife @#$% thieves!
Damage was close to $5k if my memory serves me right.

Sorry to hear what happened. Hope you get everything taken care of through your insurance company.
The process through mine was relatively painless.

Dude that sucks. Although, I have to wonder, do you think it had anything to do with the way you were parked? Nothing more annoying than dudes taking up 2 spots because their car is too important for 1 spot. It's not steal their wheels annoying but annoying none the less it could have been a mitigating factor.

I highly doubt that was what motivated the theft of those wheels. I'd put very good odds on it being the car/wheels more than the parking job.

Well, if wheels are $400 each, thats $1600.
Tires, $150 each, or $600.
TPMS, $200 each, or $800.

That's $3,000, which I'd believe, and without labor. Still, if I was in that position, I think I'd get some nicer aftermarket wheels and wheel locks. If the shop will get the check for the money, have them order different wheels you possibly like better and ask them to refund any difference to your insurer (highly unlikely they'd actually do that), or if you get the check based on their estimate, you can at least pocket any money if you go with less expensive wheels.

Also, look up TPMS "pipe bomb" - its a pressurized container for TPMS that you can keep in your trunk rather than in each wheel. Besides the ridiculous cost of TPMS, another draw back is that the batteries die in them and then you need to pay a lot of money to have them replaced. Imo its better to disable them if possible, and if not, have them be more readily accessible, like in the trunk. Only caveat is if the TPMS are centrifugally activated, you can't do that.

TPMS is a huge waste of money and misdirected "safety". Wait until cameras are required...

TPMS is a headache for everyone. The "pipe bomb" idea came about for ppl that have aftermarket wheels that can't fit the sensors. Still, I have a friend with a MB and it would cost him $600 (Its a Mercedes, so the sensor is an extra $100, plus labor) to replace one TPMS sensor that went bad so he doesn't get an annoying warning message in his D.I.S. EVERY TIME HE STARTS HIS CAR. Hugely annoying, and all because what, you can't look at a tire and see if its low or not? He looked into that solution to save money in the long run.

Oh I understand the reasoning, I was just musing at the inelegance of the solution.

Well.. dude, was that a serious question or were you just trying to throw me a sucker punch regarding my parking?
Not that I have to explain to you why I was parked that way, but if you can see to the left of my car, there are plenty of parking spaces up to that dumpster that are NOT USED 99.99% of the time. Plus, the spot on the right is UNUSABLE due to junks piled up against the wall of the parking bay.

I understand that those who take 2 spots on a busy parking lot can be labeled as an egomaniac SOB, and FYI, I NEVER do that on public parking lots.
I'd rather park further away from the building in ONE SPOT, between the lines.

You're not one of those who intentionally park really close right next to nice cars that are parked further away, are you? 'Cause I despise those breeds.

So I'm supposed to be able to pick up my Genesis tomorrow morning. That will be 1 day shy of 3 weeks - to get 4 wheels put on my car! I can't state how unhappy I am with the service I received at this body shop.

First I get the call that he saw my car didn't have TPMS. After I got off the phone I looked it up, and TPMS comes standard on every Genesis. All he had to do was 5 seconds of research. I was supposed to get it last Friday, but he called and said that the last wheel (they had 3, were waiting on 1 more at this point) was supposed to be in Friday morning, but now it's scheduled for the afternoon. Because of this they don't think they would have enough time to get them on and do all the maintenance that is required.

I just want my car back, and I'm going to wash my hands with this body shop. Hopefully I won't ever have to visit one ever again, but if I do - I'll find another place!
