So i went to the Hyundai dealer looking for official winter tire package options for my V6 Tech, and here's what they are selling:

Option 1:
17" Roadstone Winguard Sport 235/55R17 for C$1459 + taxes.

Option 2:
17" Falken HS439 235/55R17 for C$ 1719 + taxes

They would provide tire storage for 6 months free and then charge $12/month.

Are these deals anywhere near good, or should i be looking elsewhere?

Thanks

I don't know what you mean by "official". I don't think Hyundai specifies what tire brand to use (although they do specify a tire size). Dealers are independent businesses that have a lot of latitude to sell after-market products.

Well they had an official catalog, i have attached 2 pictures.

If the catalog was published by Hyundai Motors of Canada, then I stand corrected. I don't think HMA has anything like that (but I could be mistaken about that also).

I would check with other tire retailers to compare prices. You might be able to find the exact same tires or equivalent ones (or even better ones) cheaper. That is the only way you will know if the dealer tires are a good deal.

Unless you buying wheels, I don't think there is anything special about tires sold by Hyundai compared to other tires that are the same size and speed rating (H, Z, etc).

check tirerack.com my friend....

I have the same car as Fuzzynuke and I bought the Falken HS439 same size on a winter mag wheel for $1349.00 all fees and taxes in including delivery. I bought them online from http://www.1010tires.com/ This company is based in Richmond BC. They took 3 weeks to deliver them which I was disappointed with.

I tried tirerack.com and they were $150 cheaper but I would have had to pay $350 in duty and shipping.

The dealership here in Edmonton quoted me $1620 for the Falkens and $1400(something) for the winterguards.

I ended up buying mine on Tirerack.com for $1439 US including shipping. That's with Blizzak tires and Elbrus rims.

Last November I purchased a set of Yokohama W-Drive winter tires on some nice looking Alloy Rims 225/55-17 from Burlington Tire for $1660. I really liked the tires, they were quiet and very grippy in snow & icy conditions.
The Canadian Dealers all do have a catalog of Hyundai Canada endorsed winter wheel/tire packages for all models.

Our Hyundai dealer (Pathway) offered winter tires on rims for about $1600 not counting taxes. I can't remember which brand. The dealbreaker for me was they do not store the summer tires.

I bought four Goodyears on rims for $1300 from Commercial Tire. That price includes rims (black and boring), balancing, storage of the summer tires ($40) and all taxes. When I saw they were charging for nitro-fill, I complained and they removed the charge.

If Pathway are really interested in selling winter tires and providing full service, they will have to store tires too. Most car dealers in this area do and most tire stores do too. I hope this lackadaisical attitude does not carry over to other aspects of service.

I received the tires and wheels last week from 10101tires and they looked great. I installed them myself as I am handy that way. The rims were Winter Rims M104 Winter Rim - 17" x 7.5" - - 40 - 5/114.3. The tires were the Falken HS439 255/55/17.

The results were not good though. The front brake calipers rub on the inside of the wheel causing the front wheels to bind. This ticked me off as I had to remove all four wheels and ship them back to 1010tires. I contacted 1010 tires and they were very appologetic saying that their info stated that that wheel should fit...but apparently not.

Now I am looking for a different supplier. I will update my post on the forum and let all interested parties know what I find.

I had the same problem with the first set of wheels that I chose for my winter tires. Luckily I had purchased them locally at Burlington Tire (Burlington, Ontario) who had the tires mounted on the rims when I arrived with the car. The back ones were fine and the fronts appeared OK but as soon as I turned the steering wheels it was obvious they were binding on something. The something turned out to be the steering arms, that due to the front suspension geometry move forward as lock is applied causing contact with the rims. Burlington Tire had checked with their wheel supplier to make sure they had the correct offset but I guess their data was wrong - this was in November '08 and the car hadn't been out that long in Canada.

I have to say that Burlington Tire was great about it and put my car on the Alignment hoist so they could rotate the front wheels, then pulled a bunch of different offset wheels out to see which offset was required to clear the steering. I believe it was 100mm but I'm not absolutely certain. Once they determined the correct offset, they told me my wheel style choices re-mounted and balanced the tires and only charged me the original agreed price, even though these wheels were slightly more expensive.

Interesting that none of you went for the Michelin X-Ice xi2 Winter tires. I got mine including installation and nice Gun Metal Hyundai Rims at the dealer for $1760 all in. I have only needed them 3 times so far but I have to say my Genesis felt like an all wheel drive on snow covered roads. Without them I can't get out of my driveway.

It has been twenty something years since I have had winter tires since I haven't driven a rear wheel drive in that long. The difference they make is astounding.

The great Canadian winter tire and wheel hunt is close to the end. For me anyway!

I tried to find wheels and tires from local tire dealers but they were all the same cost if not more than the Hyundai dealer. 1010 tire would only offer me wheels that had been sold to other Genesis owners that had no problems. These were the the Sport Edition F9 or Sport Edition FKV both nice wheels but the price was $70 more than Tirerack were offering the same wheel.

To make a long story short I ordered the Sport Edition F9 17" X 7.5" rims with 225/55R-17 Continental ExtremeWinterContact XL tires from Tirerack for $1382 including locking wheel nuts and delivery, duty, tax etc. This is still considerably less than I could buy the same tires and wheels locally or from a Canadian tire dealer.

That is a really good deal.

So all the tire stores in your area sell winter tires to people and then store the summer ones? Man that's a poor use of expensive retail real estate.
I'm baffled by this. Why can't you take your tires home? Do a lot of people do this? It is hard to believe that a commercial business would set aside expensive retail space to store peoples' personal belongings.

And you think your dealer is "lackadaisical" because he won't store your summer tires??

This one of the most unique posts I have ever read on a car forum.

Well seeing your from "no mans land", down here in the states a lot of people live in high rise, low rise, lofts, apartments etc and don't have room for greasy dirty tires in the living room. I guess if we could all just come home to our "house" with a driveway and garage we'd probably store them there.

But you knew all this because Canada has cities too but you failed to remember.

You get the idea eh?

Sorry that you live in a tiny little apartment with no storage in the bldg. I deal with LOTS of new condo bldgs. in our city and they all seem to have storage units downstairs. I still can't picture a retail store storing hundreds of tires that aren't even theirs'. But I guess there is a market for it.

You really are working that "cranky old man" stereotype hard aren't you?

Maybe they will store your wife's fur coat for the summer when you go back to get the summer tires back on! $40 huh? I need a more convenient place to store my 2002 SL500 for the winter!
I store and stack my tire changeovers home and do the switch myself. 1/5 ton jack- swap sides in 10 min.

I gave up attempting to deal Canadian. More than half the dealers didn't even respond to e-mail enquiries. Those that did were outrageously priced.
Going to Buffalo to pay 40% of the Canadian quotes... Very sad !:(

The local dealer I spoke to said they not would not move more than $1,000.00 off list price. I know the car is a great value, but it seems that people elsewhere are getting some really good deals.
