  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Oil change in 5.0 R spec

Except these were posted by regular Subaru enthusiasts, not just a random "hey look" posts. There are plenty of these to go around, so unless Amsoil is hiring people with lots of posts on various forums, your attribution is quite far fetched.
Amsoil is distributed using a Multi-Level-Marketing (MLM) scheme. Other terms for MLM include pyramid selling, network marketing, and referral marketing. Salespeople are expected to sell products directly to consumers by means of relationship referrals and word of mouth marketing. You can see that Amsoil is on this list of MLM companies:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_multi-level_marketing_companies
So I have no doubt that there are many of these people running these scams on various forums.

Yes, the OE (original equipment) Line is API certified. Amsoil has three "lines"
  • Signature Series 100% Synthetic Motor Oil (Mostly Group IV and V synthetics) that is not API certified because it has too much zinc and phosphorus, and does not pass API fuel saving criteria.
  • XL Extended Life Synthetic Motor Oil, which is some Group III, and some Group IV/V synthetics. It is API certified. Similar to Mobil 1 in composition.
  • OE Synthetic Motor Oil - This is a Group III (Hydrocracked Mineral Oil) similar to Pennzoil Platinum, Valvoline Syntec, etc. It is API certified.
The problem is that all the advertising about how Amsoil tests better than Mobil 1 and others is done with the Signature Series 100% Synthetic Motor Oil which is not API certified. That is what I meant by bait and switch. Also, the signature series costs about $10 per quart (not including shipping).

I don't know for certain where Amsoil gets their synthetic base stocks these days, but I know for certain that about 5 years ago they got it from ExxonMobil. There are not that many plants where synthetic base stocks are made. I don't have current information on their sourcing these days, but there are only a couple of other options.

Genesis V8 oil filter question ive looked at several filters some with 2 seals some with 3 seals. Obviously the large seal is for the outside of the housinge....is the medium one for the hex nut on the filter housing? and is the thick small one for inside the housing that sits in the cupped ring under the filter???

Maybe this will help

Where did you come up with piece of BS?

BTW:
  • Hyundai recommends 5W-20 for the Genesis
  • It Mobil 1, not Mobile 1
Mobil 1 no good amsoil signature. Pennzoil ultra platinum or valvoline advanced I only like mobile 1 oil filters

I’ve never used any of the small O-rings that came with the new oil filters. Put the biggest one around the screw-in filter “carrier”, put the new crush washer on the drain plug, save the small O-rings for some other random project. :) I suspect that those are there for another vehicle that uses the same oil filter, but that’s only a guess (Elantra? Accent?, etc.) It’s possible that one of them would go around the little Allen head screw in the bottom of the oil filter/cooler housing, but I never take that loose during an oil change anyway…

EDIT: There might be some other piece on the 5.0 engine that gets removed during oil changes that I don’t know about. My car has the 4.6, like the one in the above video.
