  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi all. I am new to this site as I have just become the owner of a 2012 Genesis 3.8, which replaced a 2006 Jaguar x-type. I rarely took my Jag (or any of my cars for that matter) to the dealer for routine service (i.e oil changes, tire rotation, brakes etc) except for warranty repairs and a check-up from time to time as I preferred to take the car(s) to my local mechanic. Having said that, is there any reason why I should not continue to have my local mechanic do routine maintenance on the Genesis? Is there anything else regarding this topic that I should be aware of?

Thanks

ER

just make sure you retain all the paperwork so the 10/100 powertrain will be honored. Even though my oil changes are free... I'd still pay the dealer to do them if they weren't.

Welcome to the site, and congrats on the new car! :) :welcome:

If you want the option of, or are concerned about the Hyundai Trade-In Guarantee, then this info (quoted from their website) will be of importance to you:

"How the Hyundai Trade-in Value Guarantee works:
At the time of purchase, customers will be provided with an assessment of the premium vehicle's future value for months 24 through 48, based on an independent source. This is the guaranteed value.

When customers return to purchase a new Hyundai during months 24 through 48 of ownership, they can trade-in their qualifying vehicle towards the purchase of a new Hyundai vehicle.

At the time of trade-in, the customer’s vehicle will be assessed to determine the current market value. This current market value will then be compared to the guaranteed value.

- If the vehicle is worth less than what we guaranteed, the customer will receive the higher guaranteed trade-in value amount, less any applicable mileage charges or damage costs.

- If the vehicle is worth more than what we guaranteed, the customer will receive the higher amount. Win-Win.

The higher of either the guaranteed value or the current market value can be applied to the purchase of a new Hyundai. The guaranteed value must be applied towards the purchase of a new Hyundai financed through Hyundai Motor Finance (HMF) and only when a customer shows proof of all required vehicle maintenance at authorized Hyundai dealerships. As effective of January 4, 2012, the following premium vehicles are applicable for the current Trade-In Guarantee Value - Genesis Coupe, Genesis and Equus vehicles."

I would almost never use anyone but the dealer except for maybe tires.
Many reasons, why WOULD you take it to him? Wow, very surprised this ever comes up anymore.

Thanks for the replies. There are many reasons for not going to the dealer for service. One is convenience, two is cost and three is the fact that I trust my mechanic very much. Plus, my experience with dealer service, over the years and over numerous car brands has not been the best and based on some of the threads about service, many here have had issues too (and many have great experiences too!!). However, your comments have opened my eyes and I think I will give my dealer's service area a try and see for myself. Nonetheless, I would appreciate more opinions on this.

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply.

Regards

Use my own mechanic all the time. Buy the Synthetic oil when it's on sale and my filters from the dealer. KEEP ALL THE RECEIPTS !
I DO NOT go to the dealer except for warranty issues. Their pricing is absurd and they'd have you in every 1000 miles if they could. And, they make mistakes !:)

Agree 100%. I do it myself in my garage. I know what oil was used, whether I waited to drain out all of the oil or just most of it. What torque settings I used on the oil filter housing and drain bolt. No one has more of a vested interest in doing it correctly than me.
Use your own mechanic, there isn't anything special or difficult about the Genesis oil change.

Guys, have you know anybody who worked at a dealer see what goes on back there? If you want the pointing finger factor, sure use the dealer!

I know at the BMW dealer they spilled engine oil down the front of my 5 series. I routinely put the car on jack stands take the plastic protector off and look for leaks. When I saw this unknown source of fluid down the front of the engine, I had to go back there cause I didn't know where it was coming from. They said it was fine, no leaks and sorry. Free maintence isn't really free.

Something leaking down the front of the block on to the electric power steering control module:

yes...

I've worked at a dealer before... actually hyundai.

I hear what your saying about service doing lack luster work and can agree.... though I have been to mechanics who worked on cars and their lack of knowledge (not lack of skill) caused engine/trans problems. This perticular instance could have been avoided because the dealer tech knows ... "the teeth dont line up... and its supposed to be this way".

I agree. My Hyundia dealer Dennis Hyundia in Columbus Ohio sucks. They could not even install my replacement battery right. I have never gotten anything fixed on the first try.
