  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Oil change

The owner's manual does not discourage the use of synthetic oil, it just doesn't mention it. I use synthetic valvoline and change the oil every 7,500 miles. I change the oil myself spending a total of $45.00.

Please excuse the hijack, but watching the conversation on oil & additives reminds me of an incident I had about 15 years ago while waiting to get my Mercury Sable serviced.

An older man was holding court amongst us telling us that we were all idiots for not adding some "top oil" to our gasoline. As a child I heard people talking about this and maybe it helped on 40's vintage cars, but not in a modern fule injected car. Anyway the service manager came into the lounge and told him in our hearing that his car had some real issues as oil was getting into the fuel system. . . No more "top oil" talk from him!

I see lots of guys talking about synthetic oil and I like to use synthetic oil to stretch out miles between changes, i.e., 7,500 between changes versus 3,500. If I had to change every 3,500 miles, I'd be constantly at the shop waiting for the service. When I was at the Hyundai dealership for warranty replacement of a failed master cylinder, I asked the service manager if I used full synthetic oil would it be okay to wait for 7,500 miles between changes. He okayed the idea, but then warned me that the warranty requires changes every 3,500 miles or so, and if you can't prove that up in the event of a warranty claim then Hyundai will deny coverage. Anybody know whether or not that's the straight dope? My thought is that if you use superior synthetic oil and change at regular 7500 mile intervals and make sure it's full during the service intervals, Hyundai shouldn't beat you up if you have a legitimate major mechanical claim. It's odd that the owner's manual doesn't recommend or even mention synthetic oil as an option.

the Hynudai Genesis maintenance log that comes with the Genesis requires 7500 mile intervals unless it is a severe use.

Got mine changed today in fact :-).

1. Every 5000miles
2. Hyundai Dealership; I want every oil change to show up in their logs in case of an issue (they also show up in Car-Fax)
3. Mobile 5W-20 Full Synthetic Extended Performance. I buy it at Wal-Mart in the 5qt jugs and take it with me. Cost at dealership was $46 with air filter change as well (I change my air filter every other oil change), plus about $44 for the oil.

I get mine done by the dealer every 5000 miles and let them put their oil in it, etc. Any issues regarding the engine will include them since they are the only ones touching the car. At my last change the dealer accidentally gave me their copy of the completed work order and on the bottom was a claim to Hyundai in the amount of $10.00 for performing an oil change under warranty. First time I ever saw anything like that?
