Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

If you bought a first production 2012 R-Spec sedan 5.0, it's a faulty engine. Every person on this board who has one has reported the same issue. Generally speaking, if your 5.0 was manufactured between June 2011 & January 2012, you have a faulty engine. It was after that period, that Hyundai realized they had a problem with the 5.0 engines, however, if you didn't report it, they would not notify you. The problem has been fixed, and subsequent production lines do NOT have oil consumption problems. I bought a 2014 because I love the car, it's style, its looks and how it performs, especially since they fixed everything that needed to be improved in it. Some have asked me why I just didn't wait for the new model to come out for 2015. My answer is simple....I will NOT buy another first year production model again, cause it's going to have bugs in it also. So I'll wait till 2016, then I'll buy. This gives them time to work the bugs out of the new model. I wish the best of luck to everyone with the oil consumption problem in their 2012, I just didn't want to deal with it anymore.

I bought a 2009 Genesis with with Lambda 3.8 V6. That engine had already been around for a number of years in various versions in Hyundai and Kia vehicles, so it was not really new in the 2009 Genesis. Also, both 2009 transmissions (Aisin on the Lambda V6, and ZF on the Tau V8) were sourced from manufactures who specialize in transmissions, and those exact transmissions have been used in several other cars (Lexus has used the Aisin, and BMW has used the ZF, just as examples). Aisin was originally formed as a joint venture between Toyota and Borg-Warner to build transmissions for RWD cars (mostly Lexus).

The Tau V8 engine was a different story. It was brand new in 2009. I would never use a brand new engine design the first year it was available. So you have to look at each component of the car to see how new the technology is, and not automatically write-off a car in its first year.
 
I agree not to buy first year engines. I got the 5.0 because it was just a punched out 4.6 which never had oil burning issues. I didn't think it would have an issue since it was basically the same engine.
I did buy an new 2003 Ford 6.0 Diesel when they came out. I read that for '04 they change or modified over 300 parts in the 6.0 engines do to issues.
I had turbo issues, but not mechanical engine issues.

Don't forget that the Genesis V8 not only went from 4.6 to 5.0, but also went from EFI to GDI in 2012.
 
Have an early 5.0 non R spec. Love it. Came from a LS3 vette.

Had noticed the need for a quart between changes (7500 mile interval at most, MB1 5-30 OEM filter) but as I log miles it seems to have increased greatly.

I just started a consumption test. Will bring it back every 1000 miles.

I just hit 47,000 miles FYI.

Since Hyundai Motor America has claimed (off the record) that Hyundai fixed the problem with a manufacturing change, I am pretty sure they know what the problem was.


I agree with you a 100 % Mark. I am just gathering ammunition for what I see as being a long drawn out fight.

In the second article, the author stated that if a dealer tells you for a new car burning a quart of oil per 1000 miles that is utter BS.

There are some threads in this forum that discuss members who have contacted HMA and opened a case on this issue. The members said that because they were very persistent (but polite) they were able to get a new engine and that the HMA rep admitted that the newer engines are fixed and don't use oil. So if you get push back from the dealer, go to HMA and have your oil consumption test results handy.

you are correct sir. I spoke with them when I was doing my MPG process. They are very helpful compared to the dealership

Did you contact HMA first or did you need to get the dealership to do consumption testing? My 2012 built 6/11 is definitely eating oil.

I started the consumption test first, talking to HMA started out as general converstation about the vehicle. But the lady I spoke with told me finish the consumption test and submit all the paper work to her if dealership doesn't take care of the issue.

First 1000 Miles, 1/2 quart low. I swear it was slightly over filled, tho not intentionally. It isn't overfilled now, they added 1/2, lets see how next 1000 go.

Chris, you are headed for a factory rebuild or new engine. Just the way it is. Unless you decide not to press them.

My 2012 was built in June 2011 also and ate oil. I traded it in for a refined 2014 and after 1000 miles, not a drop of oil lost. Car is also much faster.
 
Sorry to take so long answering this bro. but I didn't. I came out about $4000 ahead, however I did put $10,000 down on the2012 when I bought it. That, combined with the $2500 refund on the extended warranty put me over the top nicely. I am very happy with my 2014, no oil used at all in first 1000 miles. Best to all of you guys with this issue.

Second test a full 2 Quarts low. I honestly think the first one was off, like the very original fill was too high. Either way, that is why they check 3 times to get a good average.

Interestingly, the service writer (who is a nice guy) whom originally claimed he hadn't heard of consumption issues on the Tau now says he has HEARD of it, but never had one at their dealer. They are a small dealer. He did say he had heard of a nearby dealer that had a Tau burning 4Qts in 1500 miles.

I wonder what the solution is. New shortblock, long block, rebuild short or long? Whatever it is I am well on the road to a remedy at this consumption rate.

One note, I have always run MB1 5-30. When they started this test I brought my own oil which the service tech forgot to use. This consumption test is with straight Quaker State 5-20. Not sure if that affects the results.

I don't think I will need to demand one, I expect based on the other experiences on this forum that Hyundai will replace the engine. I am now more curious what they will replace the engine with. A new long block is obviously a preference, but the reality is I assume I have to take what they give me!
