Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

Paint wow!

Paint wow!

Agreed, seems tacky. I am presuming the oil plug has paint on it actually, I haven't pulled the plastic panel below engine to look....as I haven't had to change my oil in a while.

Like I told the service tech, you cannot have an expectation that I not periodicaly check my oil on a car that consumes oil. I guess they are concerned I am siphoning out oil from the dipstick tube??!!??!!

Oh well,
Chris

Next Step?

3rd consumption test in line with first. About 1 qt every 1000 miles. Service department says that is "within spec".

I will call Hyundai today, but am wondering what my next step should be.

Chris

Just called and escalated my case, the service rep is escalating the regional field tech again. She was as flabbergasted as me at the consumption. I hope to hear back from the rep this week.

I told her I will not accept an explanation from anyone not responsible for this decision. I hate employing lawyers unnecessarily but will if needed.

Chris

There are other reports on here where they replaced motors because of this issue. No reason you shouldn't get the same customer satisfaction. Please keep us posted.

Chris, any updates?

I also drive. 2012 rspec.

I also have issues with oil consumption, to make a note.
I work as a tech for hyundai. Hyundai warranty is sky rocking right now. So warranty does not want to cover a lot of things. I burn about a quart of oil every 2200miles.
This is normal for these engine. Yes idk why never seen just a thing but we tell all our customers to stay on top of your oil maintenance, especially non syntactic customer to come in just around 2500 miles, and syntactic to come in around 3000.

I myself am switching over to mobile 1 syntactic oil on my next oil change. I've had the car for just a month. But been with Hyundai over a year.

STAY AWAY FROM AFTERMARKET FILTERS. I KNOW THE FACTORY FILTER MAY SEEM CHEAP BUT ITS REALLY NOT, ITS WHATS RECOMMENDED. AFTERMARKET FILTER CAUSE MORE OIL CONSUMPTION AND ENGINE NOISE.

just my word of advise. If you burn oil more then this then definitely need work done,

You say this is normal for these engines. Tell me why there is no oil burning for the 2013 nor 2014. At least I haven't heard of any oil burning for these particular years.

Put simply Hyundai screwed up. The SOBs need to come clean and fix the issue. It is unacceptable for a car to burn oil at that rate. It has impact to the environment not to mention, Hyundai would not dear advertise a car burning oil.

If Hyundai is refusing to cover things under warranty for a legitimate claim, I hope they don't mind getting sued.

You say you are a Hyundai tech. Why do you think the car is burning oil?

Enlighten the rest of us. Please!

After getting my engine replaced the service rep told me that the Piston Rings were the root cause.
He told me three of my cylinders were pretty bad.

Thanks Fresh-Popcorn. Interesting name.

At first I thought it was the valve seals. But then beggs the question, if it were the valve seals why hasn't Hyundai owned up to it and do a valve head change.

I knew it had to be something a little more involved.

I go back to the dealership this weekend for the oil monitoring.

I am down about a 1 quart in about 1000 miles. It might be more.

Did they replace your engine with a new or rebuilt one?

One morning I had a rough idle start at around 500 rpm (not a normal low rpm range to start). Car was also vibrating.

My last oil change at dealership was 10,363. Now currently at 10,997 or 634 miles later I'm down 1 quart. I check my oil twice a week like clockwork. I've been told from my dealership paperwork and service advisor with my previous oil consumption test that "1 qt loss per 1000miles was within spec"

Now I've got 1qt loss per 634! I could have an empty crank case between oil changes at this rate of consumption lol! THIS IS RIDICULOUS! Called Hyundai motors last week, now going in for a second round of oil consumption test today *and* also asking them to check the spark plugs/do compression test! Wish me luck. I love my dealership and service advisors at Keyes Hyundai btw, not complaining about them at all. They're top rate people.

Will keep a keen eye out now for dashboard lights and puffs of smoke for the future.

Date of manufacturing: 12/2011. 2012 5.0.

This is what needs to be said at the service department. The whole normal burning oil I disagree with

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
No update here. I got a call from the regional rep. She sounded put off to have been referred to me and then said she would call me back. Nothing. I leave her voicemails and she doesn't return my call. I will now call Hyundai tech line back, egads.

Real curious how our new members experiences will be. I am just amazed given my bad fortune dealing with HMA how BigTugg and others got such a quick resolution BURNING LESS OIL!!!

egads. Its one thing to be bad, but to be inconsistent is almost worse.

Chris

Called the HMA genesis rep again, they will email the regional rep. I get the feeling they don't like the disconnect between them and the regional reps. Oh well, that makes two of us. They promised to call by this Friday. In the meantime I will add oil ;-)

Chris

Don't give up. Keep on them until they do you right. There are a lot of people who had the same issue and got it fixed with new engines. That would be discrimination if they don't fix yours as well.

OK, spoke with rep again. No real progress yet. One thing I offered is that I could potentially get case numbers for folks that have similar issues RESOLVED, some that use less oil. It would help me, potentially significantly, if any of ya'll that have had your engine replaced could share your HMA case number so that I can give that to the regional rep. You can PM me or email to akeyzooATgmail.com

I do appreciate it. The fact that others have had this resolved consuming LESS oil is very frustrating.

BTW, the regional rep did mention in the notes it is indicated the repair is an engine replacement, but that a replacement has not been authorized (as of yet).

Chris,

I'm pm you my case number and any assistance I can provide I'm willing to do, even if I got to call HMA with your case number myself. I believe my turn around was quick because of my approach. I was a pure a hole but with tach. At first, I received the same speech of oil consumption is normal, them trying to change my oil changes to 3k miles etc. I have enough car knowledge not to be bs'd and I let it be known. It got to the point where the whole service department knows me! Now everybody is happy when I go to the dealer I great greeted "oh lord Anthony was wrong now!". We all just laugh about it now, but u can imagine if everybody knows you in a short time period it was crazy!

Thanks man. I think the problem is the regional rep. They are the ones that make decisions, not the service department. The service department follows the book because they are the ones that foot the bill if HMA decided not to pay. This is a $13.5K job. In your case I believe you used arbitration which according to the service rep I talked to was the decision maker, not hyundai. Essentially Hyundai lost in arbitration.

Anyways, arbitration is where I will go next if needed.

If anyone else would be kind enough to share their case number, it helps a fellow Genesis owner.

Chris

I also have a serious oil consumption issue with my 2012 R-spec. I find it totally amusing that some of the people on this forum would believe that using these amounts of oil in that short of mileage could in any way be construed as normal. The one thing I was trying to figure from all of these posts was if anyone has figured out what the actual problem is, there are far to many of us for this to be a random issue.
The other laughable thing here is the amount of people who compare this problem to their pickup trucks, BMW's, and Mercedes. Why waste your time relaying an experience that has absolutely no relevance to the issue at hand. I'll be following this thread with a great amount of interest, thanks to everyone who has given some credible advice.

I have not had oil consumption issues with my 2012 R-Spec with 47,000 miles (so far), but I would bet they had a supplier issue affecting a defined number of parts (most likely piston rings). It probably was not a design flaw but instead a manufacturing defect that they and their supplier were able to identify and fix, with Hyundai then charging their warranty expense back to the supplier.
