Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

That is still a lot of oil to loose in 600 miles. The "low" mark is 1 quart down from full.

Hi guys, very first post here! Anyhow, I wanted to revive this thread as I have an '12 r-spec too, and today just noticed my oil was very low.

When I checked it, it didn't even touch the dipstick! The problem, and why I am very upset, is the engine oil light never came on!

So... I took a video (just in case) with it running without any oil indicator lights on, and of the oil not touching the dipstick... just in case I get a hard time.

I went out and got 3 quarts and would up putting 2.5 quarts in (took a full 2 just to touch the low indicator mark) and its right between the low/high mark.

In late July it was serviced and on the receipt they indicated they filled the oil. Since then I have driven the car about 4500 miles. To me, that is quite the oil consumption for the amount of miles! The car does not smoke or leak oil.

I will be calling the dealership in the next couple days but figured I would check in with board first. I want them to fix and prove to me they fixed the engine check oil light, as well as look into the excessive consumption.

Did you check the oil post servicing? Probably was 2 qts low after service due to tech putting in 5 quarts when it takes 7 or 7 plus quarts.

I've accepted that the R-Spec uses oil. For me it's about 1 qt between changes at 4K, using Mobile 1, 10/30

If that is what indeed happened (5 quarts instead of 7) then I can accept that oil consumpion, which would mean it consumed a quart for 4500 miles. I will probably never know unless they record what they put in it, and then of course admit to it.

If they indeed filled it correctly (doubting that) then I can't accept that... that would be 3 quarts in 4500 miles!

I am most upset that the low oil indicator never came on. That is wrong and needs fixing. Had it worked this whole dilemma never happens.

How many quotes did they charge you for. The oil change prices that are normally posted only include 5 (maybe 6) quarts. After that, there will normally be an additional charge.

I bought my car as a "demo" with 4600 miles on the odo.
I now have 7600 miles and have used almost two quarts. I'm due for an oil change in another 1k and will make sure it's full, then monitor it very carefully.

If it is consuming oil, 1 quart in 1,000 miles is the acceptable standard.

OK I am going to speak with Hyundai today/tomorrow and will post a follow up. In the meantime a couple of things:

The receipt (was a free "1st time" service) indicates they did a 5 quart oil change.

This makes perfect sense as in that scenario, I drove 4500 miles and burned another quart (reasonable)... hence why the 3 additional quarts of oil I added filled it up completely.

BTW... no car should consume 1 quart in a 1000 miles. I have a 71 Torino GT with a heavily worked over 351 Cleveland that doesn't consume oil that fast.

Not arguing with you, I believe the same as you.

I went through this same exact scenario with my Acura RSX Type S. It was consuming oil at a rate of about 1 quart every 2,000 miles. Fought tooth and nail with Acura corporate to no luck. They stuck to their guns, even after I consulted with a lawyer.

Wow! I'm surprised that's not covered under the lemon law or something.

I'm starting to wonder if I should even say anything. Even though I took a video of everything and have the service receipt stating 5 quarts, I wonder if they could somehow turn this against me (voiding my 10 yr powertrain warranty)? Any opinions?

I checkd mine last night after doing my own oil change and driving it for about 2k miles. It's used about 1 1/2 Qt's.

My '04 Chevy truck with 75K miles dosen't even use a Qt in 5k miles.

^ same here. My 2011 V8 4.6 Genesis has never used oil. My GMC Suburban with 175,000+ miles has never used oil. Our pervious car, a 2004 Acura never used oil in 239,000 miles. So it seems somethiing is wrong with some of the 5.0 GDI engines.
