  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

And I use Mobile 1 synthetic too. Have a case in my trunk for frequent re-fills.

Does anyone have a solution to the supposed oil ring burned in issue. I have the same issue with my Rspec 2012. I bought the car with 5800 miles on it and it burns about 1/2 quart every 1000 miles or so. I bought it through CarMax and have extended warranty. Can I direct them to perform the oil consumption test and rely on them for this type of issue?

There is a lot of info in the this thread about the oils that reduce the consumption.

Have you tried a 5w30 or 5w40 synthetic oil such as Mobil 1, Valvoline Synpower, Pennzoil Ultra? Seems this has solved oil consumption for some folks.

What oil viscosity are you using??

Is the 60 month - 60K mile warranty expired? Obviously that would only occur if you have driven a 2012 model more than 60K miles. If warranty is not expired, any Hyundai dealer can be used, although they are likely to say that "it is normal." But good to have a warranty complaint on file with Hyundai for this issue.

As mentioned by others, I would try Mobil 1 5-30, 10W-30, or 0W-40 (in that order) to see if the problem is reduced, but seems to a common problem on 2012 5.0 models. Be aware that 10W-30 or 0W-40 may not meet Hyundai specs, but if it works then I would use it anyway, unless you want to go the warranty route.

According to the shop manual, for excessive oil consumption, one of the first suspect areas would be checking the positive crankcase ventilation line for being clogged.

The next step would be to check the compression in the cylinders.

If the cylinders show low compression, it means bad piston rings or warped cylinders.

I am also looking at my oil consumption.

Glad I have the shop manual. At least you can inquire to the dealer about the proposed test they are doing. Keeps them honest to a certain point.

If cylinders were "warped", that would be a major catastrophe for sure.

The shitty thing about this entire situation with the 5.0L motors, is that it's not a safety issue. We may never know what truly is happening.

I posted a couple of months ago about my '12 R-Spec. Completed last oil consumption test and consumed 1.31 qts over 2300 miles using 5w/30 synthetic. Talked with Hyundai representative and now they say 1QT per 1000 miles is acceptable. I told them if they advertised that when selling these cars, no one would buy one, he agreed. He said they typically don't do anything, but in my case since I was very patient and polite he was going to replace my engine. He would not admit they have a problem with the engines, just that I would not burn a drop after my engine was replaced. They just can't admit the problem or they would have a huge problem. They provided a free loaner and took 2 1/2 weeks to complete the job. Went in today and picked up car, runs great. Hyundai stood by their product, could not be happier!!

Well, at least It looks like they figured out how to fix the problem in manufacturing.

FYI.. 4100 miles on Kendall "Titanium" synthetic. 5-20 weight. Not a drop used. I used this once before with same result. I am big Mobile 1 fan for decades... This was recommended as good oil... Using Pennzoil Ultra 5-20. Will see if it does as well.

Which Mobile 1 did you use.

Typo. Mobil One, the iPhone wants to change to Mobile. Did not catch that.

5-20... But it was not the extended drain. Will check that later on. I use the extended drain 5-20 on everything from 2002 Ford OHC V8, to all newer except the Genny. Always works well. Two of the vehicles have over 200k now. And do not burn on drop between changes.

I assume you are referring to Mobil 1 Extended Protection (EP). It is a good motor oil. I am currently running a custom 50-50 blend of Mobil 1 5W-20 EP and 5W-30 EP in my Genesis V6.

That makes some sense. Try to keep the mileage improvement while slightly wider "thickness" range for less oil consumption and better start up lubrication?

Just as in marriage (for better or worse), I use the Royal Purple. No particular reason but no issues, but, the 4.6L doesn't have the oil consumption problem the 5.0L has.

Wow! Now that's what I call anal ! ! !

I think you are being a bit over-dramatic. It just avoids the argument whether to use 5W-20 or 5W-30 (which has been discussed many times on this forum). It doesn't take a genius or a lot of skill to pour an approximate 50-50 mix of the two viscosities into the crankcase.

But why??????????? The only real difference between 5w-30 and 5w-20 is the viscosity at operating temp. The 5w-30 will be a little thicker, thus providing a little more bearing protection under load and a little (very little) less mpg. What you are trying to get is a 5w-25. Other than bar-stool discussions, who cares. Kind of like your girl friend being half pregnant!!!

  1. Not only was I trying to get a 5W-25, I succeeded.
  2. I don't think it is like being half-pregnant.
