If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

I think you are being a bit over-dramatic. It just avoids the argument whether to use 5W-20 or 5W-30 (which has been discussed many times on this forum). It doesn't take a genius or a lot of skill to pour an approximate 50-50 mix of the two viscosities into the crankcase.

And I think you just like to debate.

But why??????????? The only real difference between 5w-30 and 5w-20 is the viscosity at operating temp. The 5w-30 will be a little thicker, thus providing a little more bearing protection under load and a little (very little) less mpg. What you are trying to get is a 5w-25. Other than bar-stool discussions, who cares. Kind of like your girl friend being half pregnant!!!

Agreed 100% x infinity :D

Moi? I just responded to the fact that I am using Mobil 1 EP to a person who asked me about that particular oil. Since I recommended Mobil 1 EP, I thought that for accuracy sake, I should state exactly what viscosity I have in my crankcase at the moment. I am not necessarily advocating a 50-50 blend of 5W-20 and 5W-30 to anyone else, although I have previously stated that I think 5w-20 is not specified by automakers for engine longevity purposes, but to enable automakers to meet CAFE requirements (fleet MPG).

All motor oil is a blend of various base stocks and additives. It doesn't come out of the refinery stack and straight into the bottle of oil for placement on retail shelves.

But I have even worse information for you. Sometimes when I am at a restaurant with self-service soft drinks, I mix Coke Zero with regular Coke. There used to be a product called C2 that was about a 50-50 blend of these two (to cut down on calories), but I don't think it is offered anymore. I do notice that 7-Up/Dr Pepper/etc are now offering approximately a 90-10 blend of several soft drinks (90% sugar free, and 10% regular stuff). The call it 7-Up 10, Dr Pepper 10 ,etc. The Dr Pepper version has some extra caffeine, although obviously the 7-Up 10 has no caffeine.

Why anyone would think any of this is weird, is beyond me.

Russki...

I am having problems at the dealer level for 1.5 years and the oil consumption is getting worse at 26,000 miles. It would be nice if you could forward the Hyundai representative's name to me. TY

These cars are not suppose to burn oil, at least not so early in the game. I am keeping a close eye on my car. Hyundai is on Facebook, you might want to post a message on that explaining what is happening.

Did your Hyundai dealership do an oil consumption test? Did they check for it at the piston level? What were the results? Did they give you a copy of those results?

I would contact HMA at phone number in back of Owner's Manual.

Guys-N-Girls:- Post a message on Hyundais F/Book or Twitter pages..
Guaranteed to get a call within 24hours..(allow extra time @ weekends)

:) go for it. The mixed pop variations you like is another example of personal choice. Nothing to debate or make fun of (by OCD conformists or otherwise). Have you seen the new Coke machine that let's you mix over 100 combinations of their various soft and sports drinks? See them in Noodles and Company.

Seen them at some Five Guys Burgers and Fries, and a few other places.

Talked with Hyundai representative
Russki63, Who is your Hyundai representative?

After my oil consumption test at Hyundai Dealer I decided to go back and try the 5w-20 oil in the engine. They used 5w-30 in their test.
At 2,000 miles after the oil change the oil was barely touching the bottom of the dipstick. So I'm burning about 1 qt. every 1k miles. Not good. As you said before, if they had told me it would use 1 qt. of oil every 1,000 mile I would not have bought it.

I would like to talk to a Hyundai Rep that actually understands this problem.

They all understand the problem. They just don't want to replace everyone's engine.

Last oil change I used Castrol full syn 5/30.

Checked the oil at 2800 miles just below full, down maybe 1/8 of a quart.

Checked oil on Monday, bottom of dipstick barely covered. Went straight to dealership. I told them I wanted a oil consumption test done... Apparently he didn't believe me, he got up from his desk and checked oil... long story short test has been started. I've been using synthetic and all oil changes have been at dealer... clock at 41k...

Well guys. Guess what. I am at tick mark number two. Got my oil changed at the dealer on the 26th of October. It is now December. Drove the car about 1500 miles and I am a quart low. Taking it to the dealer tomorow. They used 5w-20 oil (synthetic blend).

Spoke to a service person on the phone about the issue, and he seemed like he was in shock over the oil consumption. I am going to ask for a leak down test. Either they will give it to me or I am going to get one professionally done.

Leakage could come from the piston rings, or the valve seals. If I had to guess the piston rings.

I now feel what you guys are feeling. And I don't think I am leaking oil. Checked that. Not a drop.

Most likely they will ask me to switch to 5W-30 which is a higher viscosity oil.

Hyundai really did a bang-up job on these cars.

Nice car, but holy crap. The quality is very questionable.

I think the overall quality is very good. However, there does seem to be a problem with some of the 5.0 engines. I am still not a fan of GDI engines. Ford is having cars with GDI catch fire, hence their recall.

I agreee with you. It is only with the 5.0 engines. Being a Mechanical Engineer and working in industry, I am a harsh critic of other people's design.

My only gripe, is most likely they rushed it to production without doing the propper checks and found and fixed the error for later production runs and into 2013.

I haven't heard of any 2013s having this issue. I guess, I should ask has anyone heard of the 2013s and late model 2012s having this issue?

Most of all I hope the dealer can isolate the problem and if a new engine is required do the right thing.

We will see.....

Another oil report on my 2012, built in early fall of 2011. 5.0 non R-Spec. I have detailed results from different oils in the past. Have used synthetic since first oil change at 3-4k. Been a big Mobile one fan for decades. Put on 5-20w extended drain, no oil consumption at 3500-4k when changed. Kendall Titanium 5-20w full synthetic same result same mileage range. One oil change with dealer installed Plain Mobile One full synthetic 5-20w, quart down at 3500.

I have 2500 miles on my first Pennzoil Ultra 5-20w synthetic (Ultra recommended by many owners), no oil consumed

I have used both cheapie looking OEM filter and the one with the better fitting ends. No difference.

Mix of 30 percent miles in town, rest on highway 60-80mph. I will blow out exhaust once a tank full with full throttle run to redline in multiple gears (the GDI is set way too rich and visible crap (not blue or oil) comes out. I do gentle hyper mile with the right foot unless challenge by Achtung mobiles, rice burners or GM ponies. Then they get to see Genny taillights.

Bought this new in March, under 20k miles at the moment. Ran GDI chemical valve cleaner at 11k, scope showed very little on valves, none after. Posted report on that. Seems like no PCV problems that could cause oil to be lost. GDI does not clean intake valves with gas.

100% Shell, BP, Marathon premium. And stations with high volume sales, fresh premium.

Maybe I am lucky so far. Especially with the type of driving has not shown any defects, YET..

How do you get a valve cleaner on the valves with a GDI engine??
