  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

Removing intake manifold and blasting with walnut shells. Common practice used at BMW dealers.

I didn't buy BMW for a lot of reasons-------cost of maintenance being one of them. However, I was referring to this (from the post above mine):

"Bought this new in March, under 20k miles at the moment. Ran GDI chemical valve cleaner at 11k, scope showed very little on valves, none after. "

I don't know of any chemical cleaner that will clean carbon deposits off of the valves in a GDI engine. Chances are that individual had no build up prior to this "cleaner" being used.

How do you get a valve cleaner on the valves with a GDI engine??

I posted what I did with pics prior. Might be way up the threads on this post or another.

My iPhone app says that now "your forum administrator has disable sharing from this app". I am using "Tapit" app. I have the pictures here on the iPhone I am using right now... If the admin will turn something back on. I will repeat the pics.

Otherwise, go look for the comment and pics I uploaded some time ago. Shows how it was done and the brand cleaner.

I have the 12 R-Spec Sedan, which I love, but this oil consumption thing is getting on my nerves. My car was built in June 2011, so I was one of those "First Production" cars that has all the problems. Tried 5w-30 Full Synthetic, not as bad, but still using close to two quarts in 3700 miles. Gonna ask for a leak down test & see what they say. Am considering a 2014 R-spec or the new 2015, don't want car with potential problems with engine down the road. What ticks me off is that Hyundai knows about this problem, but refuses to address it, even though they obviously fixed it in future runs.

It's not BMW, it's ALL direct injection cars that should have this done periodically.

When you get a chance, please repost the pics and info. I've just gone through all 20+ pages on this thread---------the only pics I found were of oil filters. Thanks.

Likely on another thread. As for repost... Admin according to Tappit app says I do not have permission through the Tappit to upload pictures. And the pics are on this phone. I will search a bit for the post.

Ok... This is not the pic of the actual work I did. I actually did it later and must have put the pics in another post. Here is the brand I used. Will find the pictures of the actual work I posted at some point

This product is claimed, if used every 7.5-10k miles to prevent intake valve build up in DI engines. It is inserted in the intake as part of the cleaning. Who knows. Might want to check it out.

Must not have subscribed to the post I put the pics up. If I remember correctly it may have been a post thread covering oil changes and what filters to use. I also posted pictures if the different oil filters and the oil filter case on the engine.

Oil consumption and DI-related intake valve carbon buildup are two different issues. Not all DI engines burn oil, but many DI engines experience carbon buildup.

True statement. Oil consumption, in fact, is not very common with DI engines. Not from what I have read, at least. Carbon build up is another story. All makes have had their issues with this.

Anybody tried Amsoil synthetics in their 5.0?

Anybody tried Amsoil synthetics in their 5.0?
Which one? They make 3 different grades of synthetic:
  • Signature
  • XL
  • OE
Signature uses the highest quality synthetic components, but is not API certified.

Be careful-------many of their oils are not API certified. That could void your warranty.

Another oil report on my 2012, built in early fall of 2011. 5.0 non R-Spec. I have detailed results from different oils in the past. Have used synthetic since first oil change at 3-4k. Been a big Mobile one fan for decades. Put on 5-20w extended drain, no oil consumption at 3500-4k when changed. Kendall Titanium 5-20w full synthetic same result same mileage range. One oil change with dealer installed Plain Mobile One full synthetic 5-20w, quart down at 3500.

I have 2500 miles on my first Pennzoil Ultra 5-20w synthetic (Ultra recommended by many owners), no oil consumed

I have used both cheapie looking OEM filter and the one with the better fitting ends. No difference.

Mix of 30 percent miles in town, rest on highway 60-80mph. I will blow out exhaust once a tank full with full throttle run to redline in multiple gears (the GDI is set way too rich and visible crap (not blue or oil) comes out. I do gentle hyper mile with the right foot unless challenge by Achtung mobiles, rice burners or GM ponies. Then they get to see Genny taillights.

Bought this new in March, under 20k miles at the moment. Ran GDI chemical valve cleaner at 11k, scope showed very little on valves, none after. Posted report on that. Seems like no PCV problems that could cause oil to be lost. GDI does not clean intake valves with gas.

100% Shell, BP, Marathon premium. And stations with high volume sales, fresh premium.

Maybe I am lucky so far. Especially with the type of driving has not shown any defects, YET..

I finally took the car on a 2k mile road trip. The car did not use a drop of oil. Since that trip, I'm back to my normal driving (mostly city and some highway) and it's starting to use oil again.

I'm done with this ride!

What type of oil did you use?

Mobil 1 5W-20 EP?

For me the only oil I'll ever use is Penzoil Ultra 5w30, it meets any certification required by Hyundai and most other car companies for that matter. I have already switched my new Genny over to it after the initial break in period as I do with every vehicle owned. I'm not saying it's the only choice of oil but for me it's always kept my cars performing great. Hope this helps some:

I've tried letting the dealer use their oil for a while, then I brought in Mobil 1 (5w 30). Nothing has solved the issue. I'm sure an engine replacement is the only alternative and I'm just not down for that
