Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

So I fixed my oil consumption problem. I traded it in for a new 2015 Ford Fusion Titanium 2.0L Turbo. Getting 29 MPG city and I'm not looking back. So long R-Spec.

To share information.

I also have oil consumption issue on my 2012 Genesis 5.0 (Non R-spec).
I was running Mobil 1 5W-20 synthetic (regular silver bottle - non HM, etc).

I did oil consumption measurement, in about 1000 miles, from F mark on dipstick, it went to E w/ the Mobil 1 5w-20.

After that and reading this, and talking to my other car buddies, I changed the oil from Mobil 1 5w-20 => Castro Edge 5w-30.

I have a friend who runs a ridiculously thick oil b/c of oil consumption.
He runs Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 Diesel grade on his 2nd gen M3.

The reason why I mention this is : M3 also has oil consumption issue and its known.
Many performance oriented engines are made this way is what he said.

He told me to try running a thicker grade of oil and doesn't recommend Mobil 1.
He told me he tried all Mobil 1, Castro Edge, and Shell Rotella.
From his experience he says and other M3 owners have seen least oil consumption w/ Shell Rotella 5W-40.
(His experience is Mobil 1 is crap, consumed most oil, told me he ran 0w-40)
Oil brand is subjective, but I think generally 5w-20 sucks for this car.
Its a 400hp+ V8 motor, people are going to rev the motor often for fun, 5w-20 is too thin in my opinion unless you want to drive this thing like a grandpa.

I also have a friend w/ a 2015 Genesis V6. His oil cap on his engine states 5w-30.

Very strange how Hyundai wants 5w-30 in the V6 motor but wants 0w-20 in the 5.0, but then this is a 2015 model.
I don't know anyone personally w/ the 2012 V6 Genesis to talk about this oil consumption issue.
Would love to know what the oil recommendation is written on the engine oil cap.

I have been running Castrol Edge 5w-30 (black bottle) not the "advanced titanium" version, I ran about 700 miles (mainly freeway) I don't see a difference in the oil dipstick.
Hasn't dropped, still at F. No noticeable oil consumption.
From so far what I see is that my motor runs different. To elaborate, on cold startup (24hr > parking) my motor starts up smoother than the Mobil 1. and feels or sounds are more subdued.
I have been running 15000 miles mainly on that Mobil 1 5w-20 so I felt the difference right away.

Others on this forum who tried 5w-30, claims oil consumption but alot less.
I will post again after 2000 miles.

By the way I live in Southern California (warmer climate)

^^^ Does not matter.. Hyundai called for 5-20, they admit there is a problem with engines built in certain dates that are installed on 5.0. The 5.0 and 4.6 not made on those dates do not consume oil in normal conditions with any acceptable grade.

And, those that had their engines made in the affected dates, had unacceptable oil consumption with heavier oil weights.

Maybe Genny doesn't like Mobil 1. I gonna try a different brand 5w-20 after this 5w-30 test.

Yea, get you outlook. Has some logic. Assuming in 100k or more it is not worse. I get the hesitation to have something other than a brand new engine to replace the one you have. And the hassle factor.

For me, when I begins drinking oil, new engine, period...

So today i decided to check my oil level and i noticed some oil consumption.
its been about 1800 miles since my last oil change.

i started the car for a minute and then waited 6 minutes to check the oil level.

the picture below is my findings:


what do you guys think???

Looks like maybe 1/2 quart. Not bad in 1800 miles for a 5.0 GDI engine. Don't add any and check it in 1000 more miles. What kind of oil do you use? I think most with the 5.0 GDI get less oil consumption using Synthetic Oil. ie. Mobil 1 5w-30 or Pennzoil, or Valvoline Synpower.

If you start a cold engine, run it for a few minutes, and then check anytime soon thereafter, you will not get an accurate reading.

Best time to check oil is after it sets all night. Second best time is after the engine is hot and has been shutoff for 5-10 minutes.

i'm going to take it in on Saturday and see what they tell me.

i do have a thought processes that i wanted to share with you and see what you guys think.

If the car is burning oil and worst case scenario is that Hyundai says its within range. eventually the cylinder walls, piston rings and or oil consumption will get worse. if at any point I have a engine failure they will cover it right?

so worst case scenario i would just have to be adding oil in between changes?

i forgot to mention i do have the 10/100 warranty.

Hey fellas. I just got my oil consumption test completed last week. I am burning a quart of oil every 1500 miles. Hyundai's position is that is within operating specs. Therefore no action is going to be taken.

That is BS. Totally. They are lairs and cheats. I think they replaced engines for this same amount of consumption. Check around.

It IS a defect. The other 5.0 not built during this time zone do not have this problem. I suggest a more public approach at the state level?

I started my oil consumption like 3 months ago having come across this forum. My car has lost about 3 to 4 quarts between oil changes since I owned the car. I too get the knocking on the engine when oil gets low. I am in limbo now having gone back every 500 to 1000 miles and each time they add oil I am sometimes told this is normal. I have reported to HMA but nobody will tell me when a decision is made or what the end game is.

How does one start the BBB process?

2012 Genesis Sedan 5.0 I went in for a 3k check up. and noticed NOTHING on the dip stick. had the oil change location Notate it on the receipt. Its insane, I am losing about 1 quart each 1k mileage. and I dont drive hard at all. PLEASE email me if we find anything about this huge issue. It has happened about 6 times, and I have been to the dealer and they did the test but in 1 week of course its not looking like much of an issue. (vipdout@gmail.com)

Reading your other post (recent feature), it looks like you didn't make too many significant engine modifications. If you did, you may have issues here...

Gameplan:
1) Change to 10W-30 Synthetic and keep an eye on it, if still bad then...
2) Go back to the OEM spec oil and file a complaint with Hyundai Customer Care and ask them to replace your engine. They will do oil-consumption tests at your dealer, and if consumption exceeds 1 quarter per 1000 mi, and if you make enough noise about it (nicely) they'll likely replace your engine under warranty.

If you made a lot of big engine mods the dealer may claim void on your warranty. If so, you're stuck with doing #1. If you've got any engine bling (polished CAI, pulleys, valve covers, etc.) change it back to stock OEM before beginning this process. Not all dealer service writers are VIP-savvy.

Just completed my test, last one i was down 3.51 at about 1100 miles now they are pulling covers today to take pics and send to warranty. Not sure why the are taking pics under the valve covers but hopefully I can get a new motor soon, when I get on it nothing but black smoke screen lol.

You guys that are running really low every 1500 miles should get an independent oil analysis done. Send for a kit from like Blackstone labs. You want to make sure you aren't seeing any advanced bearing wear.
