  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Pegasus Ornament: Ostentatious Posing?

When I first purchased my Equus, I didn't really like the Pegasus ornament, thought it was a little to much so I was going to replace it with the badge. When I told my friends, all said I should leave it so I did. I'm ok with it now.

If you have to ask, you already know the answer.

I saw a strange sight across a stoplight intersection yesterday. I spotted a black first generation ‘12-‘14 Genesis that had a Mercedes style ornament on the hood. Yes, it was a stand-up chrome circle with something like the Mercedes “peace sign” inside. I couldn’t see it close enough to describe it further. It actually looked good. I own a red ‘12 Genesis with no hood ornamentation. I prefer it naked.

OK I know most people will say "just do it if you like it", but I'm asking for your opinion regarding appearance. Things are dead around this forum and maybe we can liven it up a bit...
The chrome hood ornament which seems to be called Pegasus (in South Korea) is available as an optional add-on through the dealer. On one hand I think it adds a touch of class and on the other I think it's a tad over the top. That and it might be a bit dated, who puts stand-up ornaments on nowadays? Other than RR that is (Spirit of Ecstasy).
So what do you say, yea or nay? And those of you who might have added it, how do you feel about it now?
I ordered the Pegasus and haven’t put it on because I’m undecided for the same reasons...
I could care less if a person thinks it’s old.if it’s you do it if not don’t.
The main reason for me is I could not remove the hood plate and have to have it done $150 to $500 (if buffing needed) as the dealer will not install...

Two pages of posts, without one illustration for us uninitiated?
I had to google image it.
That would be neato on a Veloster!

Hmmm, there's an old expression, damning with faint praise. Could be that's what you're doing when you suggest it would look good on a Veloster. As in, only on a Veloster. ;)
Well I'm gonna put it on my hood, just to annoy you when I upstage your G80. Hold my beer...

Over the years I've taken quite a few badges, letters and numbers, etc. off customers' cars. Every one was held on with similar 3M double sided sticky tape. I never scratched the paint. I heat the badge up from both sides if possible. I then use strong floss worked back and forth like a saw. Some badges and tape are so tenacious that I use more heat and slowly pry up from a corner. I use only plastic tools and use some stiff plastic as a paint shield. Credit cards work real well. When I have to pry I am prying against the card and not the paint.
I always clay, buff out the paint, and polish and wax the area when I'm done because very often there'll be crud from years of getting caught below the badge's edges. I'd do a DIY for you, but there are already dozens of good ones on YouTube.

Made the decision...wasn't easy. I'm kinda liking it, mostly because it's a bit retro, and because my old Jag and Mercedes both had hood ornaments. Here are the before and after shots.

Hi Dan. There are lots of YouTube videos about how to remove the badge. They’re held on with very tenacious double sided tape. The proper technique will have the whole job done in less than an hour without marring the paint. Watch half a dozen videos after searching “badge removal” and select a method you want to use. Any marque and any badge will do, they are all held on the same way.

Thanks...Much appreciated

I don’t mind the ornament concept per se. But I wish it didn’t look so bland, unfinished, and lacking creativity. I’ve toyed with the idea of sculpting something around the Pegasus theme, (without it looking like a fattened and melted Spirit of Ecstasy), and having it cast, chromed, and attached to an approved base.

Looks great! Any imprints visible from the original emblem?

Surprisingly to me, for a while, yes. I've removed quite a few emblems over the years and have no trouble with them and that was the deal here too. However, when I was done I noticed a very slight whitish, clear and very hard raised edge which I could just catch with my fingernail. It perfectly bordered the original emblem. It took me a couple minutes to figure out what it was. It was the edge of a ceramic coating I had applied to the hood! I was amazed to think that there would be enough residue to be visible but being up against the emblem I guess the liquid didn't completely wipe away during the buffing process and then hardened up. I tried claying to remove it with little success. Then I put some ceramic coating liquid on a microfiber pad and kept rubbing the area. The edge smoothed out and I was good, there was no trace of the original emblem.

Here are a couple more photos. Of course when you just look at the ornament it kind of sticks out, but when the whole car is seen it fades into what to me is an elegant touch. "Melted Spirit of Ecstasy" comment to the contrary pgsilva. ;)

Well, I like it, and I think I'll get one, because I don't give a crap about the rest of you, LOL.

Well then there's at least two of us!

I love it! Of course, I’m not only the guy that thinks hood ornaments should come back, but I also think that all these owners of new station wagons SUV’s should have a factory wood grain option. ;)

The government made hood ornaments more expensive than just the cost of the item. They have to retract or somehow get out of the way in a pedestrian crash so it does not castrate them.

They were classy looking on some cars though, and very distinctive.

Ed, the Pegasus is spring loaded and will bend backwards without too much force. I don't know if this is enough to meet regulations.

I wonder how long it will stay on the hood before being yanked off by some thugs.

That would help. From what I read, the regulation applies to car makers but the owner can put what he wants to with no regulation.
