it loses power with or with out the esc on. that's not to say that it doesn't have something to do w/ the esc- it may, but i guess the only way to really find out is to to bypass or disconnect the esc fuse.
i can consistently achieve 6000+ rpm's in first gear coming off a slow roll, but not from a dead stop. from a dead stop and stepping on the gas hard, i often feel a rumble from the drive shaft or transmission when i do lose power in 1st.
something i'm going to try and repeat w/ a dealer service tech in the car.
