  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Prospective Buyer--noobie quick questions

Yes--the SH-AWD is higher in price (and perhaps what I would be looking at if the car were for me). But my wife is not so much into the sports/highperf thing, especially since the use of the car is basically back-and-forth to work during the week and errands/recreation on the weekends. Yearly mileage is about 7000 miles and the type of driving we do does not demand sports handling or all wheel drive.

So what I am comparing is the basic TL with Tech Package versus the Genesis 3.8 with Premium package. Sticker pricing for that comparison is really close. What I had been expecting based on the hype was a scenario more like back in 2000 when I was comparing the TL with Lexus ES. At that time there was at least a $5K difference between the TL and a Lexus with comparable features. That was because Acura wanted to make a dent in that market segment so the basically underpriced the TL. So if the Genesis were several thousand less than the TL (which is what I had incorrectly assumed) I would probably be more inclined to make the switch.

Again, both cars are fine automobiles and good value for the features.

Doug,
If you have not totally ruled out the Genesis, I would like to offer this bit of information. Since the V8 2012 is starting to come in, a new 2011 V8 Genesis (has all options built in) could be negociated easily for less than $37K before tax&tag. the 2012 Genesis V6, I believe, is also around that price range. Edmunds shows the TL with Tech package to be ~ $38K.

If you have a chance, give the 2011 Genesis V8 quick spin. It might pleasantly surprise you as it did me.

i completely agree. when i drove the v8 right after the v6, it almost felt like a totally different car. i was so impressed. i've never owned a v8 before, and i've finally discovered what i've been missing. gas cost over a yr is not huge either. if you drive 12k miles/yr, you're looking at about $200/yr more from v6 to v8.

Fuel cost for the Genesis is not too terrible since it can use regular gas; the TL is required to use premium gas.

I figured I would close the loop on this thread. My wife and I ended up with a 2012 TL Tech model. We had a target budget to replace her 2000 TL and the other cars I considered in the same budget were the Genesis 3.8, Lexus ES350, and (briefly) the Honda Crosstour. We would have been pretty happy with any of those cars although we both really liked the sportier/more responsive feel of the TL. We also had such good luck with our 2000 TL that we wanted to remain loyal to the brand.

The actual acquiring of the car was the tricky part since mostly what the dealers had were non-colors (white, black, 2 shades of grey) and that was also the case for the Genesis. We really liked the Mayan Bronze which was rare to begin with and rarer since the color was discontinued. We found what was almost the last Mayan Bronze in the entire state (only a few left in the entire country) and, with the parchment interior the combination looks sharp.

Thanks to everyone for the help when I was seeking information. Again, the Genesis is a great car and the other current and upcoming Korean models will be causing massive headaches for the Asian and European manufacturers.

Does the 2012 Genesis have a HD Radio tuner? Or just XM?

My 2011 4.8 has an HD tuner, so I would guess the 2012 does also.
