If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I have a 2009 Genesis 3.8 Sedan. I suddenly have an issue starting the vehicle. After trying to unsuccessfully start it by normal means, I inserted the fob into the fob dock and the LED display gave me a message that says, "press start button while turn steering wheel." The car will not start.

The brake pedal will not depress nor will the steering wheel turn. Has anyone resolved this problem? Any advice?

Thanks

Do your brake lights come on when you press the pedal? If not, the brake switch is probably faulty. Try to hold down the start button for 30 seconds and see if it starts. If it does, be careful, you're brake lights probably aren't coming on when you stop.

The brake lights do not come on. I tried pressing the start button for 30 seconds but nothing happens. I am not sure that I can take it to a service dept during the holidays so I might be waiting for a while.

I got a service tech on the phone who said I should just try to turn the wheel while pressing start button because my steering wheel was locked. Does this sound reasonable? Why would the car not start?

If your brake lights aren't coming on, sounds like the brake switch is faulty. The YF Sonata had/has this problem and depressing the start button with the brake pedal depressed for 30 secs was a temp override for it. If the 30 sec override doesn't work, I'd suggest that you get it towed to the dealer and get it repaired soonest.

I also have this same issue. The wheel would not turn because in lock position. It took forever to get it started. I will be taking it to the dealer tomorrow. It seems electrical or maybe ties into the brake issue they have recalled.

After being parked, the power brake system may loose some of the "trapped" engine vacuum - that vacuum is what provides the power assist. When that happens, the pedal is MUCH harder to push to get effective braking action and may be hard to push far enough to trigger the electrical switch while starting. Did your dash "wake up" when you pushed the start button? If so, then odds are the brake switch didn't trip because a) it's bad/installed incorrectly or b) insufficient vacuum (no power assist) and you didn't shove hard enough on the pedal. If the dash didn't come alive, then the START button/system itself has issues - it's not related to the brake pedal or power brake assist system.

Note: if the issue IS the power assist: when the engine actually does start you'll feel the brake pedal suddenly sink an inch or two as the now-running engine generates vacuum and thus the power brake assist starts functioning. The power assist vacuum should NOT bleed off (go away) when you shut the engine off; you should be able to pump the brake pedal a couple times and still have some assist. After the car has been sitting several hours it's normal from some vacuum to bleed off; if the car has been parked a couple days there will be little vacuum assist and the pedal will take a pretty good shove to trip the switch while starting. Again - the "dash waking up" is your guide: if it wakes up, try starting again while pushing harder on the brakes... if the dash doesn't wake up, it's not the brakes. The amount of push force needed may be different with the new switch too depending on how it's installed... there is an adjustment range. If the tech just screws the switch in place without properly positioning it then it'll take a lot more pedal travel to actually trip the switch while starting. With power assist available you won't notice this... but if the power assist vacuum has bled off it may take a LOT more pedal force (and pedal travel) to trigger the switch to START the engine. The dealer should re-adjust the switch to the correct position.

A dying battery in the fob will prevent starting; putting the fob in the small plastic-door covered slot under the stereo (and to the left of the rectangular storage slot) lets the car "see" the fob via an alternate method that doesn't require the fob battery. On later cars without that little dash slot, holding the fob close to the START button accomplishes the same thing. Having the fob close to other electronic devices - e.g. cell phones in your pocket - can mask the fob signal from the car as well. The dash should display an error message basically saying the car can't detect the fob while you push the START button.

Someone above you wrote that they were able to put the car in Neutral and start it; did you get a chance to try that?

The Shift lock is a little tab near the shift lever that needs to be removed and then you can put a screwdriver or something to override the lock.

G-268050 is talking about the steering wheel lockout (that locks the steering wheel when its turned when the ignition is off). I had this happen once on my '09. I had to muscle the steering wheel so it was not resting on its lock while the car was not running and it would start. This is NOT easy to do with only one hand, so get help to push the start button while you go full-on wrestlemania with the wheel. Not sure what senses the lock position (a switch or torque sensor?), but if that sensor were to fail as a false-positive then it could be an unpleasant and expensive tow & fix.

I‘m having this steering wheel locked and cannot start my Genesis 2009 today (after a week away). I’m a small woman and could not unlock the wheel by myself. I followed an advice to put the car in neutral to unlock the wheel but it did not work. I guess I have to call AAA to help me wiggle the lock steering while I press the start button. I’m frustrated!

I’m guessing that your ‘09 Genesis has its original battery. Calling AAA is not much of a burden. Go for it.

Going through the same problem and I’m actually at the dealership! And they’re telling me that it’s an electrical Steering Column issue and it needs to be replace! But my car actually starts every now and then by just pressing the push the start button! This is annoying and doesn’t make sense at all to me!
