If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

R2C Cold Air Intake Interest??

Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??

There's at least a 1 person market out here for a CAI for the new 3.8L GDI sedan. :welcome:

I have a custom solution right now that's not perfect, but it does the job.

++++1 for the 3.8! Let me know if you eventually have one for a '13 3.8

Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??

Here are some pics of the installed prototype. What do you guys think?

I know my car is filthy, hasn't gotten the TLC it needs in this awful winter.

Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??

Nice job.

However it looks like the one Weapons R is making.

So my question to you, as I asked them, where is the true Cold Air Intake?

have you modified the front of the car to draw in cold air and if so, can you show us that?

Otherwise it's just another tube with a cone filter that gets rid of the sound canceling OEM intake.

I'm not downgrading your system, just looking for a true CAI for the car.

Yes, this is not a true CAI that has an exclusive front bumper inlet. We stay away from intakes that require customers to make permanent changes to their vehicle which would be necessary to create a front bumper inlet assembly. The benefits to our system would include the extra filtration capabilities as well as a much greater filter surface area that allows for much more smooth air flow and longer periods between filter cleanings compared to replacing the OEM filter. The shorter piping and smoother bends also lessen the initial inertia of air which can benefit throttle response even on fly by wire cars. As well as you mentioned the beautiful sound I just found out this car can make when you really get on it.

The heat shield does isolate the filter from the vast majority of hot engine air so that the path of least resistance is the cooler air coming from behind the headlight assembly and the fender sidewall. While still allowing for great amounts of air flow at full throttle.

Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??

me like. price? availability date?

Price and availability is still all TBD. I will be running the system to put it through its paces as well as sending it off to a 5.0L to have it fitted and run to ensure that the fitment is good on both vehicles. Then I will have a better idea on the details of its release.

Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??

You are killing me lol I going to sell the car before the intake is avail.

Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??

Not going to lie I was hoping for/expecting a full box like the genesis coupe intake but I will buy one as soon as they are available.

Thanks John for the honest reply. I understand what you are saying about having customers cutting up their cars. Some of us are willing to do it IF there is a real gain, while others are not so inclined. I haven't taken out my air box yet to look around and see if there is indeed a place to run a CAI intake. Do you know if there is any room in there for one since you have been inside of yours? I do know that the front bumper assembly is full of foam for impacts.

My other question is do you have test results that prove out the air flow increase and throttle response? Being that I work in a Test and Evaluation occupation, I know that what is seen or perceived is not always correct once you look at the data.

Again thanks for the honest reply.

Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??

Ok, since I've been running my mouth, I figured I shoudl start walking the walk. So I went and too a good look under the hood of my R spec.

From the factory, the car comes with a Cold Air Intake (CAI) Over The radiator (OTR) Ram Air system. Yep, that's right, a CAI, OTR ram air. That black plastic peice that sits on top of the radiator with the vent openings feeds into the two filter boxes for the engine. In the bottom of the large air box on the passenger side is a secondary CAI inlet that opens up when more air is needed. From a seperat thread on here, a forum member who ran their car at the track found that they had quicker times by leaving the air box stock vice removing the lower inlet flaper valve.

So would it be more benifical to just put in a high flow air filter in the stock box? Can you keep the OTR in place and have it feed cold air to your filter? It is removed in your pictures. I didn't look that close but could the OTR be enlarged to bring in more cold air?

Hey John, I went back and looked at the two pictures you had posted of the stock 4.6 and 5.0. They both show the OTR. Not sure though of the V6 if it has the same set up.

Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??

Sorry to hear about the accident. Hope you and the family are OK.

Have you lookd at a possible over the radiator style of intake? Not sure if it would work or not. Varraram is one company that makes them for other cars. I know the made one for the Pontiac G8 and they layed the radiator back some so that it would fit. A possible Idea.

Thanks so much for all your efforts in pushing the production of a CAI for our forgotten TAU! I would like to bring up Crusty Old Shellbacks post about the Varraram OTR intake. Was this an inpossibility to try and fabricate something like that one? Or is the following not strong enough for that one. It seems like that would be an awesome option and utilize some factory look in the engine bay. I guess those of us that would like to go further could possibly find a way to get some cold air to your setup. from the front maybe......:grouphug:

Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??

BTW I love the way the 3.8 coupe utilizes the ram air above the radiator to direct the cold air to the air box!:D

Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??

when the final product is completed, i would like to see the before and after power increases on a dyno. Most of us gen owners can then make a decision on whether the increase is worth purchase. I think we are all hoping that the cai shows a significant power increase.

Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??

I'll volunteer to do some cold climate testing in good old Winnipeg if you send me a kit for my 4.6 :D

I'd also like a big increase, but my experience with CAI's in the past is that they usually don't yield significant gains. But the best way to maximize any gains would be with supporting mods.

Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??

Depending on price, I'd go for 12+ hp increase, but, not for anything in the $300 neighbor hood which is ridiculous for a piece of pipe and a big cone filter!!

Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??

Let us know. I haven't touched my '09 4.6 in quite some time. I'm getting bored here!

Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??

There really is no point in doing a cai without being able to tune the cars computer. No matter how much more air you throw in there the computer is only going to allow what it is set to allow

True and false.
It's true that the tune would optimize the airflow and all.
And it's false that the ECU would still learn and adopt.

I agree. I added a K$N to my Civic SI and all it did was make it Backfire. I ended up taking it off.
