Rattle at Startup

Well -in defense of the dealer, they did not stiff-arm me at all.
They did ask me to try a few things (synthetic oil, change of filter, inspection by service manager, then district rep, etc)
I did cooperate with all these requests and did make the car available to them when they asked (like when the rep was scheduled to be in town, and letting them keep the car overnight, so they could do a cold startup)

So - I think that being a 'good customer' pays (courtesy, polite responses, etc) - after all, I am the 2nd owner of this genny (not the original)
I think they've stepped up and done it right.

Here's the real proof: I'll buy another one!:D

Don't sell yourself short just because you didn't buy the car new. A customer is a customer. Stories like yours give those of us who wish we could get service like that hope! LOL

Re: Rattle at Startup - Final Chapter!

Sorry for the long delay - I said I'd report in when this was settled and it now is.
The clatter or rattle at startup turned out to be a defective v6 engine. Dealer did a top-notch job: brought in the regional rep and they all listened and checked it out - rep said to replace it.
Upon removal of the old engine (42K miles) the mechanic pulled the pan and inspected it - and was nice enough to call me and I got to see it. Looks like there was excessive fore/aft play in the crank. He took a couple of screwdrivers and showed me that he could easily move the crank back and forth (like if the thrust bearings were worn out on an old GM block). The noise I was hearing was the crank/rods moving front-to-back at startup. Once oil pressure was up (3-5 seconds) it would quiet down.
They installed a brand new v6 - absolutely no charge to me. They did transfer some old parts to the new engine(alternator, plastic cover and some other pieces/parts) but everything else is new.
They also provided us a loaner for the time it took to do the repairs.
I'm saying Two Thumbs Up for the Medlin Hyundai guys.

After all was done - the defective engine was shipped to Hyundai Engineering, who (I am told) will do a tear-down and see what went wrong.
A happy ending for our Genesis.
Back on the road again....

Hey,

I just took my 2010 Genesis Coupe into the shop with a VERY similar sounding issue. During cold start-ups I get a clacking sound from the engine bay that last for 1-2 seconds then goes away.

Had it in once, said that they thought something was stuck that was preventing oil from getting to a portion of the engine until oil pressure was high enough, so they did an oil flush and new oil/ filter.

I picked up the car had the same noise as before. They said to drive it for a few days and see if it persisted as they didn't really drive it enough to get the oil circulated properly. Did that, then took it back.

Now they are saying it was a bad camshaft position sensor. Does that sound legitimate? Can anyone explain to me why a bad sensor would make that noise- I would expect the car to just not start up or hesitate. I just wonder because I only have 9K miles left before the warranty runs out and I just worry that they are playing the waiting game til my warranty runs out.

FYI it has 51K miles- bought it used at 45K miles in Jan 2013 from the same dealer.

Hi Astrick,
Sorry to hear that you're having troubles with your genny.
OK - here is what I'd recommend, based upon your note: Since they've taken the time to do some listening/diagnostics - I suggest you follow along with them. Since they think the noise is caused by the camshaft pos.sensor - then go ahead and have them replace it.
If the noise remains, then they have to deal with it (i.e. it's under warranty so let them replace it) - if it's gone, then the problem is fixed.
I did the same - just letting them look/drive/replace whatever they wanted - the only money I was out, was for the additional synthetic oil changes - I think it totaled $100 for my costs for the work they did .
Balance this small cost, vs the price of an engine....easy decision.

Let us know how this progresses.

Just a quick update- I let the dealer replace the sensor as they suggested and drove the car back home. I then let it sit over night and when I started it up the next morning, the sound was still there, as I expected.

I called them back immediately and it is currently in their hands to try and diagnose/ fix it for the 3rd time. They called me today and let me know they were going to need to keep at least until tomorrow, so i will update when I hear something from them.

Given the fact that they charged me $250 for an oil flush that clearly did nothing to fix the issue, do you think there is any chance of getting that money reimbursed or is it not even worth bringing up? I feel that I could make a pretty compelling argument that the only reason they did that was to be able to charge me for it, as they said they couldn't proceed with the warranty until they did the oil flush. FYI- I had just done an oil change with Mobil 1 oil and filter the weekend before I brought it in.

Mine is at dealer currently for same condition - I'll update in a few days.

Just got another update from the dealer- they needed me to authorize $375 worth of charges so they could tear apart the engine and look for sludge. Apparently if there is sludge, i will be on the hook for that charge and any repairs...

I only owned the car for 5K miles before this issue started, so it couldn't have built up during my ownership since that is less than the recommended 7,500 mile oil change schedule.

However, I am getting really worried they are going to try to screw me over. I've never dealt with this kind of thing before. I bought it from the same dealer thats servicing it now, so if they do find sludge, do I have a chance of winning a lemon law case against them or am I F'ed?

Hi, without reading back - Did you buy the car New? If you purchased it Used, did You register yourself with Hyundai as the new owner?
I would immediately contact your local BBB & discuss it with them..
In addition I would set up an appointment with the dealership CEO & Service Manager & get everything they say confirmed in a letter. Don't give the Go Ahead until everything is clear as to their explanations etc..
If the vehicle is under warranty & You have carried out Your service responsibilities, I would call the Hyundai Customer Care Helpline (800-633-5151) & get the situation Logged & a Case number.. Good Luck..

I bought it used through the same dealer that is doing the service now. How would I have registered it with Hyundai as the new owner? They already made some repairs under warranty, so I would guess that I am registered as the owner with them.

The vehicle is still under the 5 year, 60K bumper to bumper that is transferrable to the second owner. I have asked them to send me a written explanation of why they need to pull apart the engine.

Astrick117--
I have purchased quite a few PreOwned Hyundai's.. I always contact Hyundai direct and get my name/details noted against the Vehicle VIN..
Even with a NEW "H" I always talk direct with "H" re my details..
(With the information "H" can contact you for Recalls or any other info)
On my ex VW which was a Lemon, the BBB got VW to act within 48hours..(The vehicle was replaced (SEL Premium replaced the Original SE))

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Well, I finally got some good news from the dealership- no oil sludge build-up, so as of right now, all of the engine issues will covered under warranty, though they have no idea when it will be ready.

They are working with the Hyundai Tech Line to try and figure out the issue and are now reconstructing the engine after they tore it apart. Not sure what they are trying to accomplish, but that's the next step according to the service person who has been working with me from the start.

I do have a loaner at no charge to me (Sonata), so its not like I'm without a car, but it certainly doesn't have the performance I'm used to...

Another update- the dealer still has my car- going on 10 days now. They put the engine back together and ran a bunch of tests. Apparently it failed the oil pressure test, so they let it sit over night and are testing it again this morning.

They suspect that the oil pump may be bad. If that ends up being the case, is there anything else I should be worried about being worn from lack of oil pressure?

Yes, everything.

If it fails the oil pressure again, contact a regional rep and demand a new engine. You will never get that one 100% right.

Just heard back from the dealer over the weekend. It failed the oil pressure test again and before I even said anything they said they are waiting on approval from the DSM to drop in a brand new engine under warranty. More updates to come...

Mine is still at the dealer. Problem involves getting new cam phasers along with the timing chain guides. But, I did get myself a sweet, sweet rental.

Nice. Signature or Ultimate?

Signature. Really nice - really like it! Gonna hate to give it back! I'll keep you updated on the original problem when it's resolved - had the Equus for about a week now -

Picking up the Genesis today, taking the Equus back. :(

Well, its done. Brand new engine installed and waiting for me to pick-up! I will ask them what was wrong with the old engine when I stop at the dealer.

I've never broken in a new engine before, but with reading (Popular Mechanics) it says to drive moderately, but that it is a good idea to open the throttle pretty much in a higher gear to help burnish the rings against the cylinder walls. It also says to avoid constant speeds. Anything else I should be aware of?

I plan to change the oil after about 50 miles and then again after 1,000 to make sure I'm not running oil with metal shards in it.
