  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Brand new to the board; came here hoping you guys could provide some insight on an issue I'm having with my 2009 Genesis 4.6 sedan. I bought the car used back in April with 18000 miles on it. The dealer put brand new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires on it before I took delivery. I have put about 5000 miles on it since I bought the car, and today noticed that the back tires are completely bald and threading. Take a look at the attached picture for reference. Do you guys think these are bad tires, or an issue with the car? I drive the car normally... no peel-outs or racing or anything.

Thanks for your help!

Are you sure you're not this guy's understudy?

Is it possible you're not doing it accelerating, but under braking? Have the ABS tested. If the fronts aren't working properly the rears could be getting a beating.

Looks also like an alignment issue. BTW tires should be checked weekly for proper inflation and uneven wear.

Something is definitely wrong with either the suspension, brakes, tires, inflation or alignment. 5k miles is nothing, the tires should last 30-50k miles.

Need better pics of all 4 tires. Can't tell what other side of that tire looks like on the one pic you provided.

There is no way a new set of tires should wear like that in 5k miles. The Tire Rack Treadwear rating for those tires is in their Excellent category. You definitely have a serious problem. Based just on the one picture you are wearing the outside edge severely, which suggests a serious alignment problem. Has this car ever been in a collision?

Will try to get you all some better pictures... the car is with the dealer tonight. I bought it from a Mercedes-Benz dealership so they don't look at Genesis' very often, but they kept it overnight and gave me a loaner. I am hoping it is nothing too serious as I am supposed to drive the car to TN for vacation this Friday.

As far as a collision... not to the best of my knowledge. I bought the car with 18000 miles on it, with a clean carfax.

The front tires are completely normal, as well. No signs of wear on them.

What about other rear? If the one tire that is on the drive wheel is bald, and other rear tire is OK, that may suggest that the driver is accelerating too quickly, maybe without even knowing it.

Even on my V6, I had trouble adjusting to the fact that my Genesis accelerated way faster than my previous car (also a V6). I kept wondering why the cars in my rear view mirror were so far behind me when I was first in line shortly after the traffic light turned green.

Hard to believe that rapid acceleration alone would do it. I have a heavy foot on the gas (I also often see other cars in my mirror behind me after the light turns green!), but haven't seen anything resembling this degree of wear. I think that there's something wrong with the car and/or the tires.

If the wear was caused by acceleration or "peeling out" the wear would be across the tire not just on one side. I would suspect a bent or damaged link the rear suspension. This looks like an alignment issue.

Rapid acceleration = rear squat = increased wear on inside of the tire.

I would suspect your toe is in severely, causing the tires to "scrub" the pavement while rolling.

thanks for the replies guys... the other rear tire is also completely bald, but has not threaded like the tire in the picture. sometimes I accelerate rapidly, but it's rare. I normally drive quite conservative in an attempt to conserve gas...

Have you let anyone borrow your car recently?

General question for all: Is the rear end on the Gens (V8s at least) limited slip? (aka positrac)

If so, both rear tires should be worn nearly identically if such wear was caused by crazy hot-rodding. Perhaps a point to bear in mind if the dealer claims the cause is abuse.

Two michelin tires like you have will set you back about $500.00us out the door.

I have tha same tires on my SL500. Those tires should last 30,000 miles. If they were new, your playing with us because 5000 miles on the AS Sport should not be bald. The tire has a 500 rating.

he is not playing I have had same prob on mine for the past year and all in spec on alignment ...cant figure it out

9-1/2 years. Impressive feat of thread necropsy, my dude.

OP was likely trolling. I've put 4 sets of Pilot Super Sports on both my 09 and 12 and got 30,000+ miles on all of them. Granted the MPSS's 103Y load rating is a slightly more stout tire than the AS 101Y, but anything over 100 on our cars will be more than enough to handle the weight. Cording the rear tires in 5k miles on both sides with otherwise even wear and normal drivability isn't going to be alignment, it's going to be a heavy right foot. Those tires come with about 10mm of rubber. So OP managed to burned off 2mm every 1k miles. That's a LOT of rubber. He more likely did not get 4 new tires, but 2 fronts. If the OP did, and also wasn't trolling (unlikely) then there was likely rubber dust or burnout clag all over the ass end of the car. If he, and you, long-term-averaged <10mpg then there's your sign.
