If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Recommending the best synthetic oil

^Great and thanks for the info as always.

One thing I found was that the Mityvac plastic tube (used to suck out the oil from the dipstick well) is coiled too much when it is new and it has trouble going to the bottom of the oil pan because of that. But when you put the tube into a hot engine, and force it down (jerking up and down) then it eventually straightens out enough (by the heat of the engine) that it goes in easier in subsequent oil changes.

Lowes has a nice selection of tubing - surprising.

They have a semi-rigid 1/4 in. od type what works perfect for me. Just the right amt. of flex.

Summer in DFW is upon us (means HOT!!!).
I've been using Mobil1 5w20 synthetic but happen to have an extra case of 10w30 also synthetic so I need to use it up sometime.
The car is only 21k miles so far.
Is the 10w30 good to use?
Even when you run out of 10W-30, I would switch to 5W-30. I think 5W-20 is too thin if engine longevity is a concern. With a synthetic 5W-30, you should get just as good of gas mileage as a conventional 5W-20. Or use Mobil 1 0W-30 as a compromise.

Your engine will be just fine with a quart of 10W30. There's no need to use such viscosity after that however.

I use M1 0W30 in mine because of the better startup lubrication properties that '0W' oils offer. Likewise, at operating temps, the 0W30 will be just as thick as the 10W30.

WOW! New member, and I have read this entire thread (including links) with interest. Gets a little contentious occasionally, but as long as it doesn't get out of hand and remains at least PG rated, I appreciate the passion. I am very grateful for all the research, and the depth of knowledge and commitment to sharing accurate information when you are presenting your opinions. Not really looking to resurrect this thread, but I do have a question/problem that I think is oil related.

My 2014 3.8 GDI has Constant Variable Valve Timing (CVVT), I think all Genesis engines do. It is operated by oil system pressure acting on cam actuators. When first starting car in the morning, it idles/runs rough for 30 - 60 seconds then smooths out. Won't do it again until it sits for several hours. Does anyone else experience this? Is it normal? Will the oil you use make a difference? Car is still under warranty, but dealer says they cannot duplicate...may try again when colder.

Thanks for input.

Looks like most people prefer Mobil 1, 5W-20. The question is which Mobil 1 should I use?

Mobil 1, Mobil 1 High Mileage, Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Enonomy, or Mobil 1 Extended Performance?

Marty
Never use a High Mileage Oil unless you engine is leaking oil. Don't pay any attention to the 75K mile recommendation for High Mileage Oil. If you switch to High Mileage Oil, you may need to keep using it, because it swells the seals and switching back to regular oil may cause leaks.

If you live in a very cold climate, I would use Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy. Otherwise either 0W-30 or 5W-30 is fine. I personally use Mobil 1 5W-30 Extended Performance because the price at Walmart is very reasonable.

The recommendation for using 5W-20 oil was made by Hyundai for maximum EPA fuel efficiency, not for maximum engine longevity. I would highly recommend 0W-30 or 5W-30, especially when using a synthetic. Besides, a 30 weight synthetic will have less friction than a 20 weight conventional oil.

Supertech 5W-30 should work fine too, at about 2/3 the price of mobil1. It's a bit dated,
but a nice person posted a spec sheet on bitog here.

Supertech 5W-30 is definitely better than any conventional oil or synthetic blend.

But Mobil 1 5W-30 is only about $25 for a 5 quart jug at Walmart, and Mobil 1 offers a $12 mail-in rebate twice a year. The 2017 Fall rebate promotion ends Oct. 31, 2017. I believe that one can submit up to 2 rebates per household, if purchasing two five quart jugs (I would put them on separate receipts and file the rebates separately).

You don't even have to mail in the rebate, if you can scan and upload the receipt. Walmart receipts are fine, despite not being listed under "Some participating retailers."

LOL now you tell me. I did not see that this weekend. I got the Mobil 1 extended life i did not see a coupon.
this time around it took me 3 HRs to change. WHY? the Dern Filter cap was on there VERY VERY tite. I had to keep going to part store to get a 27 MM box wrench instead of the socket I was using as it caused MAJOR stripping. Luckily i got it off. WHEW. Sorry did not mean to HiJack

No one offer response to rough idle at a.m. start?

Changed oil this past week using 5W-30 full synth. Will evaluate going forward for rough idle. Try to update later.

Are you talking about the harsh sound it makes for about 2-4 seconds during the first startup of the day?

I have used 5W20, 5W30 & 10W30. 10W30 is the only oil that minimized this. It didn't completely stop it but I would say for about 90% of my startups sounded significantly better with 10W30. All of the weights were Pennzoil Ultra Platinum so only difference was weight.

I live in Dallas Ft Worth so not worried about any of these weights but have multiple jugs of each weight so I use the 10W30 in the summer where my lowest temp is about 75 degrees F. I just changed my oil yesterday and used my last jug of 5W20. Moving forward it will only be 5W30 or 10W30.

Here is a list of most common synthetics available and their test results. Clicking on the individual bottle will even drill down further for those that really need to know.

Those aren't quality ratings, they are specifications for just one particular viscosity, so not sure how that helps most people. All of them are within specs within their particular viscosity, and it is wrong to assume that having higher numbers in any category is better so long as they are in the specified range.

The quality of any of the name-brand synthetics is so far superior to what is required by Hyundai, and because of the 7500 mile maximum oil change warranty to maintain the warranty, I don't think one can wrong with almost any of them..

If the question of price comes in, Walmart sells name brand oil in 5 quart jugs at very attractive prices. In addition, Mobil 1 offers a $12 rebate for each 5 quarts purchased (maximum 10 quarts per household), twice per year (once in the fall and once in spring). The fall rebate expired on Oct 31, but look for another one that starts in the spring time.

One other thing, is that I would highly recommend 5W-30 (instead of 5W-20) for all Genesis V6 engines, even if the early ones specified 5W-20. If I owned a V8 (I don't) I would use 5W-30 for that also, or maybe 0W-30 in very cold climates.

No...not noise, a rough idle that feels like a minor missfire. Rough sounding exhaust note, but not engine noise. Put it on RO at dlr twice, they claim unable to duplicate. I have used 5W-30 synth since I bought it. Changed oil 3 times now, no difference. Trying to find if anyone else is/has experienced this.

mobile 1 5w30

... I truly believe that all brands are good nowadays but I still will not buy Quaker State. And I think Castrol either bought or was bought by QS. I live in GA and I started using 5w30 after doing research here on this forum.
... My thoughts are if you are going to change your oil every 3k miles or so just use regular oil but if you are using full synthetic then every 6k-7500 miles is okay.
... We all have to make our own decisions and I promise you people will never all agree on any discussion about oil.

Our 2012 Genesis 3.8L used to have a rattle or noise at startup and since we went to 5w30 it hasn't done it again.
I have a friend with a 2011 or so year model, not sure what year, that had a timing chain problem and it caused a failure. I think he had around 100k miles on his Genesis and he thought my initial noise could have been the same problem but I don't believe so since changing oil viscosity got rid of my noise.
