Road Trip results in Worst and Best MPG's so far

I've taken two long trips in my Genesis - one was over 8000 miles and took about 30 days to complete and the other was about 1500 miles from home to Missouri. The best mileage I got on one tank was 28.7 and the worst was 23.9 in the mountains (don't know why either as other fill-ups were normal range. I try to run at 78mph with the cruise control on as much as possible. Out west I get run safely over 80 without worry.

I also run premium and I don't subscribe to the other threads that yield the same mpg as regular. I don't doubt them, but my cars get worse mileage on regular than premium. If it did I would run regular. Overall I don't think any of us can complain about our mileage considering what we are driving.

Reading the mileage claims here leaves me a bit depressed. My 2011 3.8 fully loaded gets no more tha 19-20 mpg at 50/50 city/hwy driving. And I'm a cautious driver. Took it back to the dealer and they found nothing wrong to account for lower mileage.

I am guessing that it probably has to do with your driving style more than anything. Quick acceleration will reduce it quite a bit.

I just finished a 600 mile road trip and averaged 30.4 MPG with my 2011 4.6 - I regularly get about 23 MPG with city/hwy driving. BTW - My experiments with Regular vs. Premium Gas on long road trips shows absolutely no difference between them as far as MPG.

On my roadtrip, I had the cruise set at 68 mph. - When I am driving in the city, I mostly accelerate smoothly off the red lights (unless I am next to a BMW -- : - ) ---

I have over 60,000 clicks on my 4.6 and have experienced the EXACT same thing as you...no difference whatsoever!

i only have about 3k mi on mine but i used premium for the first 1k miles and saw no change in fact it got better after the switch (or due to the engine starting to break in lol..who knows?)

My driving style is crazy, but for this trip it was old lady like I wanted to see what the car is capable of if driven lightly compared to my V6 Sonata. BTW my Sonata and Genesis get the same MPG's on the highway, but the Genesis a hair less in the city, maybe 2 mpg's less.....so almost a hair anyway.

I know the premium vs regular thing seems odd, and I can't explain exacly why they have the differences in my car, but the difference is there, and makes up for the small extra cost for premium.

Plus I want my extra 7 HP!!!

Excellent topic, I got my 4.6 in January and now have 3500 on it. I had a short trip of around 60 miles down 77 one day and had a average of 30 on the display. I was shocked for such a powerfull system. "Not typical for a v-8" I was also shocked when I decided to test the real performance after it was well broke in. So with 3500 on it I let it go, I backed off at 150 mph with it still pulling hard! I am taking a trip up north next month and will pamper it to see what the best mileage I can get. I generally around 25 with 50/50 driving. Drops a little when you do the past test.

This Car is fantastic to drive and very comfrotable other than the expected road feel ever so often. It would have been nice if they had an adjustable suspention like many of the sports sedans in the luxury line. I am currently badging mine and put the truck on today, Taking to dealership for them to put the front hood emblem on as I am not keen on drilling my hood.

You don't need to drill the hood. Snip the tabs off the back of the emblem and stick it on with 3M emblem tape. It will not come off unless you peel it off.

In the city, the key is to accelerate slowly when pulling away and to coast whenever possible. On the freeway, keeping your speed down to about 55-60 MPH, using cruise control, and limiting acceleration are the best ways to improve mileage.

Personally, I find it very hard to do these things. For example, the other day I took a road trip on a freeway with long stretches of construction that had two relatively narrow lanes. I often found myself driving to the right of trucks that looked like they could easily drift over into my lane, so I often had to accelerate to get by them. Overall, I got a bit over 27 MPG, which is still not too bad.

It's funny that my teenage son probably drives more efficiently than I do since it's harder for him to pay for the gas.

There is nothing wrong with your car. Take it for a long trip and you'll see very different MPG numbers.

My 4.6 averages 17 MPG for my daily commute which is 60/40 city/hwy driving. But, last week, I drove from Houston to Dallas and I was getting as much as 30MPG when I was doing 60MPH and it dropped to 28MPH when I speeded up to 70MPH.

I regularly use Sam's gas (87) and Sunoco, with other brands on rare occasion - I see no difference in performance or mileage.

Simple solution is to use the cruise control and also not run at high speed. Keep the cruise under 70 mph. I've done this countless times and still get the same results right between 28 - 30 mpg's. If you drive on a road trip with a ton of hills, that will not help mpgs.


I'm not the only one reporting above the EPA rated fuel economy on this vehicle. My dad always told me since I was little, that you can always get above the EPA rated fuel economy on most vehicles if you drive nice and don't speed.

Where was your road trip, how fast did you drive - etc.

I took a road trip from Minnesota to Florida roundtrip 2500 miles. I had no trouble getting 29 mpg average - mostly freeway driving with the cruise set at 70.

My genesis best reading was last week at 28.2mpg for the 4.6

I just got my oil changed and it was mostly all highway driving. approximately 470mi driven

I use 93 octane.

Btw my MPG on the car with less than 500 miles is 17 mpg, mostly city with occasional highway(pretty much the same I was getting from Avalon with 3.0 V6). There will be trip to Las Vegas in a week - I believe I'll get better numbers

No, I did not buy a car with 375 HP to run 30 mph, as noted above my driving style is quite the opposite. You can't drive 500 miles balls-to-the-wall, or you'd be in jail, so the cruise control works great when your not doing a buck 20.
