  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Shifting Issue with G80 (2-3rd gear only)

Sure I can definitely do that, but my question is more about does this actually apply to 2018+ because the tsb only mentions 2018.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Recently experienced something very similar to the OP, which is what brought me here. It only happened maybe 2-3 times a couple of weeks ago. However, I thought I also noticed a slight slip around the same time. I haven't been able to replicate either problem since, but it's my GF's car, so I don't drive it every day. Hoping it was just a glitch, or the solenoid discussed is the fix if it turns out to be something more. This is on a 2017 G80 3.8 Ultimate HTrac with around 78k miles. Posting this just to add to the thread for any potential future readers.

The TSB may not apply to 2018+ cars as probably the part numbers changed. However the concept of hard shifting still revolves around fluid, solenoids, valve body and clutches. We will tackle them in this order.

Took the service tech with me for a drive, he felt it, but is hesitant to start troubleshooting with replacing the solenoids, etc...because there was no DTC.....dealer quoted me $1400 for the TSB as I'm out of warranty, problem could get real serious if this leads to larger trans problems.

I still suggest you start by replacing the fluid and the pan first. If the problem persists then go for changing the solenoids at a certified dealer or a good workshop.

Problem solved!!

Huge thanks to this forum and especially some in particular. This is really special that some folks take enough time to help a fellow owner solve a problem. Very grateful.

The ultimate fix was what’s been stated here: drain and replace the transfer case fluid. I bought the syringe on Amazon and ravenol fluid, found someone to rent me time on a lift and 35 min later was done. I got out about 500ml, maybe 450. Put in about 500ml before it started over flowing. Interesting thing was It didn’t immediately solve the problem. I drove away and the issue remained. However about 20 min later it went away like magic. I also noticed that getting up to highway speeds seemed to be the switchover point. Could just be a coincidence who knows. But. I’ve driven it a few days and a few hundred miles and it’s night and day. Made me fall in love with that engine and torque and spirited driving again!!

The fluid was definitely dark that came out, almost burnt. I guess I’ll do this again in about 1000 miles with the ravenol I have left just to be sure what’s in there gets diluted and properly flushed as good as can be. Absolutely crazy that genesis won’t acknowledge this and the dealer won’t change it as part of Maintainence.

Curious if anyone has seen this issue with a 2017 G80 jerk/rough shifting when going into 3rd gear only? All other gears are smooth. I have been experiencing this issue lately with my G80 and you can feel it when it shift from 2-3rd gear. Initially it happened when I am turning and I take my foot of the gas to slow down then step on the accelerator, then you feel the jerk. Now it happens in all driving conditions.
Hi. Not sure if it is to late but any jerking when gear shifts from 2-3 3-4 4-5, you need to replace 2 solenoids from the valve body which is located in the transmission. O was able to replace the solenoids which fixed the jerking. Good luck.

46313-4E702 & 46313-4E602 are the part numbers for the two solenoids. Please double check fitment for your car model.

I think the consensus is that the ultimate fix is replacing the solenoids. People have stated here, and in other forums, that while replacing the fluid does help in some cases, often when it does it doesn't completely remedy the issue, or the issue comes back after some miles.

But it certainly can't hurt to replace the fluid as a starting point, anyway.

I have been having the same issue for two years. Nobody could seem to figure it out. I ahve a 2018 G80 sport. 77k on it. Is this something Genesis sill cover under warranty?
Not sure about the warranty coverage.

I'll find out. This bulletin days 2017. But mine is 2018 and a different model. I have the 3.3 sport.

I am having a similar problem with my 2018 G80 Sport, beginning this past summer. It is a jerking/bucking between 10 and 35 MPH, especially when the car is warm, or in warmer weather (it really does not happen much in the current colder weather). I am getting no codes from the system. I see some have replaced a solenoid - is there a TSB for the 2018's (the one attached was for 2017 3.8L)?

Hi Wjcola, it is the same with the 2018 model. I had that issue on my 2017 model. I ended up replacing the whole valve body plus all the senoids, myself, now everything is working without any problem. Hope this will help you.

How complicated was the replacement process? Do you have specs or a procedure for doing that?

I went ahead and started with changing the fluid in the transfer case, as some have suggested, and it seems to have done the trick. It's only been about 10 days, and I will update this down the road a bit, but so far, so good.

I have a 2017 G80 5.0 with 85,000 miles on it. I'm the original owner. It started the dreaded jerk around 65,000 miles. I have taken it to rhe Genesis dealer here in Alabama (before they closed) and the issue could never be replicated by tech. Had the transmission serviced, and it helped a little but it ultimately got worse again over time. Now with 85,000 miles and my power train warranty expiring at 100,000 I had it looked at by the local Hyundai dealership. The tech was in total disbelief that I had been driving with this issue. They told me that because it was a 2017 they can still work on it. It would jerk so hard that I thought it was about to break apart. Since I was the original owner, they submitted the paperwork and it was covered under the power train warranty. They had it for about two weeks and I just got it back today. I had a few other things done ( brake flush and alignment) and she drive like she's brand new again. This is my third Genesis. I had the 2009, 2013 and the 2017. I love the styling and the way the drive. I agree with everyone the Genesis service does need to be better.

I had a similar issue with my 2018 G80 Sport several years ago. I considered several of the remedies mentioned in the thread, including the solenoid, however one of the posts suggested I have the fluid in the transfer case changed, which is relatively simple and cheap. I did so, and the problem is gone, and remains so to date. You might try that first, before getting into more complex and expensive steps.
