Sporadic Low Brake Pedal Issue

Update: The dealer ended up keeping my car 5 days before I ended up getting it back. The first day, of course they told me that they 'couldn't replicate the problem' to which I responded that they can keep the car until they fix it. I also quoted the issues/resolutions that I read on this website without referencing the website. The service person told me that they can't just replace the master brake cylinder without having justification for it. I was furious. An hour later, the guy calls me back and said, "Mrs. X, guess what we found? The master brake cylinder needs to be replaced but we have to order the part." Oh really??? Shocker. I told him that while I'm not a mechanic I'm not just some clueless woman that doesn't know anything about cars. I cannot stand the way that dealerships treat women when it comes to service appointments. Anyway, Once I finally got my car back, with brakes, there were 3 other things that was screwed up as a result of them screwing with the settings in the system. After 2 weeks of screwing around with this I can honestly say that the car seems to be running normally. I do love my Genesis but I cannot wait to sell it and I told the service manager that he needs to fix my car in an expeditious manner because as soon as I get it back, I'm selling it. Such a shame because I do think this is a great car and for what they cost you would think that the service would be a step up from the usual. And to think that Hyundai had the nerve to try to woo me to buy an Equus for $62K. Please!

Hi everyone.

So the dealer replaced the ABS Brake Module. The service manager put 275 miles on the car before he gave it back to me so he felt the repair was secure.

I've had the car for a week now and all seems fine. However, it was fine for 4 years and then the brakes failed; so I'm not the most confident person behind the wheel of this thing now. My wife doesn't want to be in it and hopes I sell it.

Regardless, I hope none of you have to go through this. It's frightening to think what would have happened had there been traffic both times of I got off the interstate and the brakes went to the floor. I worry about all of you as well because this problem does not just happen to older Genesis models, but 2012's as well. I know because my co-worker's dad has an '12 and his brakes failed. He had to slam the manual parking brake as well (which scares me for those who have an electric parking brake).

Stay safe my friends.

I am having this same issue and the serviceman at the dealership is blowing me off! Car is in the shop for the 2nd time! How can I contact Hyundai about their incompetent technicians and servicemen? An earlier post states that Hyundai is aware of this problem, but according to my conversation this moring, nothing has been sent out to the dealers. He also stated just because these complaints are on the web does not mean that Hyundai will make the repairs. I have a 2009 3.8 Genesis. I am petrified to get this car: back and drive it.

Thank you! I filed a complaint today and also called HMA corporate and filed another complaint. Hopefully, someone will at least try to make this right. I do not want to die and cause anyone else pain in this car.

Hello, everyone.

I have had my car back for a month now after the replacement of the ABS Brake Module and all is well. This is definitely what needs to be fixed!

Also, my coworker told me that he took his wife's Tuscon to another dealership for a repair and mentioned the brake failure I was having on my Genesis. Their response??? "Yeah, we know all about that. We had to repair 2 of them last week alone." WTF????????????

Hyundai North America and Hyundai Corporate know about this problem. My guess is that this is obviously a serious and ongoing problem. Hyundai has had a ton of bad press about the mpg lies via the class action lawsuit. Also, there is the payout associated with that to think about. The last thing they want is a recall on their pride and joy, the Genesis - 2009 North American Car of the Year......the car that is completely being redesigned for 2014. Mark my words, people will have to die before this part is recalled. Until then, they will do everything they can to move the 2012s and 2013s off the lot to make room for the 2014s.

I'm so worried for all of you. And unfortunately, the more I read about this the more I want to sell my car and go get something that won't kill me at any given moment.

Stay safe my friends.

I am very worried about my 2009 Genesis with 40K miles. About once per month I do some driving in mountain terrain with downhill grades of about 7% for several miles and I need to apply the brakes quite a lot.

There is a fairly new TSB to replace the brake fluid with DOT-4 fluid. I hope that is the problem, but am a little suspicious as to whether it is the cause of the ABS Brake Module failure that more and more owners are experiencing.

I also agree that it is just a matter of time before someone is killed, and even if the TSB will fix it, the TSB is only applied if an owner happens to have their car at the dealer for some other reason (doesn't sound like Hyundai is notifying owners).

Car finally fixed after filling complaints and having several conversations with the general manager and assistant service managers who tried to dispute me telling them about the all of the complaints that other Genesis owners have been having with the ABS module. Of course the problem with my car was the same as others. The ABS module was replaced. They recalibrated ABS sensor. The technician also recalibrated sterring angle sensor and bled the brake system. During the first visit to the deler the brake fluid was replaced. I am so disgusted at the disrespect from Hyundai concering this isue. So far the brakes are functioning properly. I am still a little apprehensive when driving because of the issue. Praying that the brakes hold. I have never had any serious issues with this 2009, but I may have to get rid of it to have peace. I was looking forward to the 2014, but now I do not know. I have owned Hyundais since the 80's when no one wanted to buy them and made fun of the brand. I have had an Excel, Accent, Elantra, Sonata and I still have my 1998 Tiburon FX (which I love). Thanks to this group for verifying the issues I had with the 2009 Genesis. The HMA and dealer tried to dispell this group, but I had no problem telling them that if it was not for this group, I may not be here today. These are the people who keep them in business.:grouphug:

Hello everyone. I have an 09 Genesis 4.6. I had the same brake issue that has been mentioned here. My Genesis has about 83,000 so it is out of warranty. One day the brake pedal just started going to the floor. I replaced the master cylinder. That didn't fix the problem. I replaced the power booster even though I couldn't understand how a bad one would cause this problem. That didn't fix the problem. I replaced the master cylinder again thinking that I might have gotten a bad one. No success. Finally, I read this forum and learned about the ABS Module issue. To have the dealer replace it would cost $3,000. I found a used one on eBay for $180. Fortunately, when it arrived all the numbers and markings were identical to my bad one. I swapped them out, bled the brakes and it works like it's supposed to now. I did have to take it to the dealer to have the ABS Module reprogrammed to match the VIN of my Genesis. That cost me $100.

In total, I have invested about $500 to fix this problem and a few hundred sleepless nights worrying about it. I wish Hyundai would acknowledge the issue. Clearly, there is an issue with these things. Other than this, it's been a great car. Purchased it used in 2011.

You know what everyone, I just realized something extremely important. Are the ABS parts the dealers are replacing in our cars the same as the original parts or are they new and improved parts??? If they are the same parts at the original then it is only a matter of time before those also fail and one of us end up a very serious or catastrophic accident. If they are indeed replacing them with parts that have the fix then why aren't they telling us that?

It seems to me that we are receiving replacements with the exact same part that is failing all of us at various times in the ages of our cars. People have posted ABS failures on Genesis models between 2009 and 2012. I drove my car for about 4 years to the date when the brakes failed for the first time. Other posters here have driven their Genesis for 1 year and their brakes failed. As we all know this means that the ABS part can fail at any given second. Now on top of that, I am now realizing that the replacement ABS part the dealers are installing will last somewhere between 1 and 4 years and the probability of a failure spikes dramatically; and that is a seriously morbid thought.

It's sad to me that I love this car so much (I bought it out of its lease) and the more and more I see these posts the more and more I feel in my bones that I need to walk away from this car. I just received a call tonight from the dealership asking to buy my car back and I'm seriously considering it. That way if something terrible happens to the next owner it's their liability and not mine.

2 weeks ago I received a recall notice in the mail and it was to drain and replace the brake fluid. My car is '098 with 80K on the ticker. Am I the only one who received this?

HMA is not notifying owners. Some dealers may choose to notify owners, and it appears that some dealers who were not the selling dealer (but are other dealers in the area) are notifying owners in an attempt to increase their service business. Was the dealer who sent you the info the dealer that sold you the car?

Everyone,

Please do me a favor so I can sleep at night and call your dealer to tell them that you want the brake recall fixed on your car immediately! I called the dealer (no, they did not call me) and said I wanted this done and they immediately told me to bring it in for the recall. My voicemail to the Service Manager was very thorough about the replacement of DOT3 to DOT4, so I knew I was talking about thanks to this forum!!! Also, when I was there the Service Tech called the shop and told them to hold some brake fluid for my car. Apparently Hertz is bringing back all of their Genesis models to have this recall fixed and all of their DOT4 supply is being used up. So get on it quickly!

It took about 6 hours to complete and I feel much better knowing that this along with the Brake Master Cylinder and the ABS Brake Module have been fixed. Nightmare.

This is more chaos.. Both dealers and Hyundai.

Why does the DOT4 prevent the problem?

What brand was the ABS module? Hyundai, another Korean or other brand company? Many US makers use domestic made ABS controller. Would like to know for the records who it is.

This forum helps the owners stick together and in this thread, possible lives. Too bad the Sargent Shultz (Hogan's Heroes TV show fame "I see nothing, I know nothing" liar) Korean and American officers and management at Hyundai fix deal with this now. This will only grow down the road.

The linger they wait, people could be killed.

I wonder if in other counties this is exported, the same thing happens?

The dealer who sent me the notifcation recall was not the selling dealer - but the local dealer that has dome my most recent services.

When I started this thread back in July last year, little did I know the can of worms I was opening would grow into a bucket of worms. In looking back through all the posts, I'm thrilled that I came to this great group of folks looking for an answer to a seemingly intermittent but very perplexing and unsettling safety issue. My hat is off to all for taking the time to help me with this very serious defect in our beloved Jenny's. With that said, here's the final conclusion (hopefully),to my wild and crazy ride over the last few months. Yep, you guessed it, about a week ago, my dealer replaced the ABS module, reprogrammed the computer to accept the new module, and replaced the DOT 3 brake fluid with the DOT 4. My initial post had the car at 73,000 miles when this issue reared it's ugly head on my wife while driving to work. As I said at that time, the dealer could not replicate the problem after keeping it for a week. Sure enough, when I picked the car up, the brake system was working perfectly normal. It stayed that way for another 6,000 miles until bam, out of nowhere, that ugly head reappeared. This time however, the module had breathed it's final breath, and we got it to the dealer pronto without any bent metal. I was also armed with the printed posts from this forum, of all the good people who identified the issue as a faulty ABS module. I received zero push back from the dealer, and in fact they admitted that they had the same issue and repair solution with two other Jenny owners. Fortunately,we had purchased an extended warranty (the comprehensive plan through Zurich), good to 100,000 miles. The $3000 repair cost me a $100 deductible. I know it's only been about a week since the repair, but all is well once again. If the replacement module is of the same design as the original one, this '09 will have been replaced with the up and coming 2014, so hopefully we'll make before another failure. One other point I'd like to make is that at no time, during the first incident or the last failure, did the ABS light come on, nor were there any fault codes in the computer. Don't rely on the warning light or fault codes to identify the issue. Well, I hope this was helpful to some folks and possibly saved some heartache, in whatever form it came. See you all down the road.........

I know that really thank you for posting about this braking system issue back in July 2012. I probably would have either been seriously hurt or dead if you had not posted. I am sure a lot of us feel that way. It really bothers me that too many of the places where these cars were purchased would not acknowledge the problem early on. Now we have to either sell our cars or wait until 2014 for the newer model because if the same parts are used, the problem will resurface as mentioned in another post in about 3 - 4 years.:(

So you are saying that you just changed the ABS Brake Module and it only last 6,000 miles and then failed again????? God D*mnit...this pisses me off.

So what did they put in there for the 2nd ABS replacement? What makes you feel secure that this won't happen again in another 6K miles?

Thanks!

Thank you Jean for your nice comments. Jeepers, you make me feel like some kind of hero :D, but I just was looking for some feedback from the very knowledgable folks in this forum, and I hadn't seen where someone had brought the issue up. I'm just glad that there is now a discussion going on, about a potentially disastrous failure that Hyundai doesn't seem to want to acknowledge. I hope your Jenny has been healed, and you can relax a bit tooling down the road.
