If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

SRS Winged Airbag Installation (Pictures)

Just changed mine with swapping the inflator over from USDM to KDM cover without unplugging the wires from the inflator.
very easy when you can find a torx long enough to get to the screws

Picking up my Genesis 4.6 later today. Sorry to be such a newbie but I am have trouble locating the replacement steering wheel air bag cover with the winged emblem. From reading the forum this part including the inflator mechanism should run around $245.00. Is this correct. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer in helping me locate this item. The photos that you have posted look awesome. I tried looking in the two web sites listed below but still no luck.

Thank you

Thanks for the quick reply. They must be having issue with their website as it will not open. I will check later today to see if it will work.

KoreAuto World is another nice place to purchase from.

Thanks. I finally was able to get into the www.kdmstuff.com site. Does this air bag replacement assembly include everything needed to make this conversion? I have read that some sellers do not include the inflator mechanism? Is this unit everything that I would need?

I got the one without the inflator. Some have said that they don't want to "risk it" and move their old inflator over to the new bag. You have to rotate the inflator 180 degrees (top is now bottom) before attaching to the inflator-less bag. In theory though, if the inflator's job is to ignite outward than I don't see why this is deemed risky. The inflator does not know that it was rotated. It just knows to explode outwards into the bag.

Am I missing something here? Is there a reason why everyone is insistent on buying the bag w/ inflator?

Yes, the kit from KDMstuff comes with everything you need. take of the + and - terminals off the battery, then it's a quick unbolt on the sides of the sterring column, unsnap the connections, then reconnect the connectors from the new airbag and rebolt the steering part back on. Then hook up the battery and done.

Not having the correct tools, and not wanting to screw something up, I had my dealer swap the airbag. I was charged $37.50, which seemed entirely reasonable to me.

Be very careful about the colors. There are two colors, Black, and Grey-beige. I mistakenly ordered the black one and I'm pretty much stuck with it because the Korean company won't accept returns. My interior is also cashmere. Instead of spending $245.00 again, I'll just keep it until someone mistakenly orders a Grey-beige and then we can just trade them out.

I installed the airbag today. It was extreamly easy and would have to say the hardest part was disconnecting the battery. Only because I didn't feel like taking out the rubber trunk mat and was bending over while it was on top of my head!

1. Disconnect the battery. I had to put a ball of paper towels under the (-) terminal because there was no slack for it to stay away from the battery.

2. Unscrew the two (star) screws on either side of the steering wheel.

3. Pull SRS towards you and look behind to see whats going on.

4. Disconnect the ground and the 2 black and red plugs. This is where using a very small flat head will come in handy. You need to pop the yellow clips upward to release the plugs.

5. Now the SRS is completely disconnected.

6. Now follow all the steps in reverse to put the new winged badge SRS airbag on and enjoy.

*Please remember that you are doing this at your own risk. I am not responsible for anyone or any product you purchase. Also keep in mind that this was how I installed my SRS airbag. You may choose to do so differently.

Also remember to follow the instruction in the Hyundai manual for disconnecting the battery.
ASHDUMP,
Did you order the black winged airbag? The color blended well with your steering wheel. I ordered a black airbag thru KDMSTUFF.com and it is darker than the steering wheel. The bag is only available in two colors, and I would think Beige will be a way different color.

Give the steeringwheel and new airbag a good cleaning. Then apply some protectant. If the color is still way off then I would return the air bag you bought.... it could also be possible that your original steeringwheel has changed colors from the sun.

Just replaced the airbag today. Thank you ASHDUMP for the pics. The pin that sticks out of the new airbag / steering cover unit can be aligned to the old igniter by just filing a slot in the old igniter. Took two minutes on the bench with a hand file. It saves worrying about the wires doing a 180 deg bend.

Do any of you who have done this recall whether you removed the positive or negative side of the battery first, when disconnecting the battery? I only ask because 30 years ago, working on my Datsun 280Z, I pulled the positive cable off first (seemed intuitive to leave the ground on) and I fried my ECU. $1400 to a college student in 1980 was a small fortune! Wouldn't want to fry my Gennie.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
A good rule to follow is to always remove your ground cable first.

just a bump so i can find this thread better for my installation!! thanks again op.

Just ordered the Genesis winged airbag cover with inflator, and have a question about the airbag ground connection. In the photos from the original post (thanks by the way!) it isn't obvious how the ground connection is released. Will all be clear when I take the airbag cover off the wheel and actually look at the ground wire? Many thanks.

The ground wire with a little effort (pull) will slide right off, just make sure it and the other two connectors are snug tight before you put everything back together. Removing the ground wire is much easier than working with the two connectors.
