  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Steering Wheel Buttons acting weird

OK. This thread must be contagious. I read it for the first time last night.

Up until today my voice recognition system has been doing fine (I bought my Genny in May '09). I tried to make a hands free call today and when I pressed the voice command button on the steering wheel instead of getting the normal "DOINK....say a command" I got "DOINK....(pregnant paus)....pardon" and then the list of voice commands popped up on my screen. I "cancelled" out and tried it again. Same issue. I parked and shut down, then restarted, but the issue was the same.

In my case, if I say a voice command, it does what it is supposed to do. It just doesn't give the initial "say a command" voice prompt after the "DOINK" tone. I'm gonna see if it does this again tomorrow after a good, overnight "rest".

From this and other threads I've read it sounds like Hyundai hasn't figured this one out. They just start removing and replacing stuff until it "goes away".

I find it very interesting that there may be a connection between expiring XM free subscriptions and the voice / audio systems going south. I was very hesitant to even mention the connection in the first place, but truly, the first failure of the voice recognition system and absense of XM took place on the same drive.

Chuck Nash in Wyoming - it gets lonely out here without your car to talk too!

Did you check the settings to to see if the option for the voice prompts is turned off for some reason? I turned it off so that my car behaves like yours.

Hello From Wyoming Again...

Ok, it just keeps getting more weird! I am the one that first made the suggestion (as weird as it sounded) that my button and voice recognition problems started at the same time as XM shut off the free subscription (which was one full year for some reason in my case).

Well, two days ago, I received a notice in the mail that XM had turned my subscription back on for an additional two week period and if I liked it I could have it for four months for a total of $20.00 (or something like that) - but here is the kicker - that very day, my voice system, all buttons, voice commands, etc started working again perfectly and have not failed one time since.

I am really starting to think that it is indeed possible that the signals to the XM radio to suspend service are messing up various areas of the software for the entire voice and audio control systems.

I program computers for a living (for various universities) and have seem many things every bit as strange.

That link is dead !:(

Ditto here peeps. Voice died on me a few weeks ago. Dealer puzzled, said he'll have to rip apart the dash. This thread may save me a lot of grief. Crazy thing is - my XM expired around the same time. I think I'll try subscribing for a bit to see if that fixes it. If it does, I'll let you know.

I have exacly the same problem since early November when the XM exprired  (for one year the system was perfect - not a single issue), it will be interesting to see if restoring the XM service fixes this issue, if so it may be cheaper for them to extend the XM serive for us than replacing the head unit etc...

I am experiencing the same problem as Fuzzynuke and Bernie have both reported (I also posted a separate thread about the head unit, but this thread is more focused on the voice problem). When I press the voice button there is either no response or a long pause followed by "please wait". When I get "please wait", it finally dings and any voice command I say is repeated, immediately followed by lockup of the steering wheel buttons and the DIS controller. After a few minutes the lock is released and music returns. Also re-starting the car releases this lock. This happens every time I use the voice button.

So far the dealer has replaced the head unit but has been unable to fix the problem. Last week they told me to take the car until they have a solution. I may have to go over their head and talk to someone at Hyundai. I really don't think the dealership has anyone capable of fixing this problem (recently it took them a week to fix my brake light malfunction).

Does anyone have a copy of that TSB mentioned by Bernie? (the link is broken)

Tell them to change the Lexicon amp in the trunk.

Tell them to change the Lexicon amp in the trunk.

My dealer refuses to believe that the amp could cause a problem with voice recognition. Service manager says that the amp is not at fault or I wouldn't have normal sound when I don't use the voice recognition. Said he would call Hyundai support.

Today I'm in their loaner (again) while they keep looking. They haven't said exactly what they have done, except to say they have tried two replacement head units.

Damn this is getting old. I am losing a lot time from work. And a $4000 option is not working. I am beginning to feel like a fool to own this car.

The only good thing so far is that their low-end Sonata loaner rides much better on rough pavement. Isn't that a real pisser!

Ok Folks - the voice recognition problem is finally fixed! So I'm not so down on the car now. And guess what - the problem WAS the AMP! Thanks everyone here for your help. You're an excellent group!

Yup.

The amps seem to break in at least two ways:
- total loss of sound, and
- loss of XM subscription (which any idiot looking at a diagram of the system would conclude is handled in the amp) memory and moody voice recognition

I'm guessing you don't subscribe to XM?

You're right I never subscribed. However, I had XM available for 14 months until the dealer replaced the head unit. I thought maybe the dealer signed me up for the first year but I haven't received any notices or request to extend service.

I wonder how much longer the free subscription would have lasted if the same head unit was still in place.

Thanks for your help.

I renewed my XM, and my voice control is once again functional. That's a dirty trick on the part of XM! Guess I'll keep the XM on until I can get the amp replaced. Too bad I don't listen to XM...

But if there's only a single 'thing' wrong with the amp (and that one thing causes both the XM troubles and the voice recognition troubles), then when you start your car tomorrow morning, it'll forget you have an XM subscription.

It works today too, and I anticipate it will function until I cancel XM. It would appear, at least on my wheels, that the voice control issue is tied to XM... That's all. I'm guessing that a software patch may fix it, or a lifetime subscription to XM.

Here we go again. The dealer replaced the amp last week (with one from another car the Hyundai rep. brought over). Now it freezing up again and the general manager won't respond to my calls. I guess I should now try to contact Hyundai directly.

I was also a victim of the broken voice control issue. I decided to try sign up for XM before taking it to the dealer. When I called XM to renew my service I found out my trial subscription was still active, it just didn't work in my car. The service rep sent out a refresh signal and 10 minutes later both my XM and voice control were back. I think that's proof positive that two things are related.
