If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Suspension Issue - A new take

When I look at the revisions that Hyundai has done to the Sonata, I am optimistic that they will continue to improve the Genesis. They do seem to address issues. For me, the electronics issues that people are experiencing with the tech package are more worrisome. I can live without the Nav. My hopes are that they make some popular options available a-la-carte such as HID, Lexicon 17 speaker, and HD Radio. I would like to see them move these options to a-la-carte and make the air suspension part of the Tech package.

When they bring the air suspension I would probably take the loss and upgrade to the latest model. That suspension works awesome on the Audi's.

Cutting that from the US model was probably not the best move they made.

Cheers

Thomas

Thank you for explaining to me why my two brother-in-law's with new Audi A6's ride so much better than my V8.

Except both the Genesis and the A6 use gas-filled shock absorbers.

I don't know about the A6 but the Q7 I drove in as a passenger had some fancy feature to adjust its air springs to different settings from comfortable to sporty. Very impressive.

The irony is that the Genesis was originally developed with this feature in Korea but it was removed for the US models.

If you are saying the ride should be the same as the Audi 6, do you have any idea why the ride is not? For sure in the back seat of the V8. Thanks for the explanation or your ideas why they are different. I know the Audi is more money, but after labor costs from raw materials to finished product there can't be much difference. Even Port loading costs would be higher for the Audi. I don't want to argue with anyone I only want to understand (learn) more.

All I said is that what you considered an "explanation" did not apply because both A6 and Genesis use the same suspension technology.

I've had to take my 4.6 with the Tech package in for the second time with electrical problems. Both times I was given a 3.8 as a loaner. The first one handled about the same as the 4.6 with a stiff rear suspension. The one I have now is a 3.8 with a manufacture date of 6/18/08 and it has 800 miles. The difference between this one and my 4.6 is very obvious. This suspension is much, much better. I have to go over speed bumps in the shopping center nearby and with the 4.6 and the first 3.8, the rear end dropped as if the shocks weren't there. This 3.8 makes no noise and is smooth and comfortable.

My 4.6 has a manufacture date of 10/24/08. Did Hyundai do something between June and October of 08 that changed the suspension?

I have a new 3.8 manufactured 4/19/09
I had the dealer sell me the car without the 18" wheels that were on it, they removed the 18 wheels and had them replaced with the 17" factory wheels.

MY PROBLEM: I can't find a Genesis with 17" wheels to read the recommended tire pressure on the door jam, can anyone help? Thanks Grip.

It's the same 33 psi for all the tires, 60 for the spare. From owners manual page 358

Thanks for taking the time to provide me an answer.

I was told by the dealer that the Owners manual specifies generic pressures and that the official recommended pessure is on the door jam. My door jam for it's April 09 build, specifies 33 as you say for the 18 inch tires, The reason I am looking for a reading from the door jam is to be certain.

While we are on the subject the, Hyundi specifies 17 inch rim at a 7 inch width and tire rack, wheel speacilists and discount tire all say 6.5 inch Hmmm. What I am looking to do is change the rims to a new set of 17 inchers with a rim width of 8 inch. The tire (Dumlop) specs state that is acceptable but what I am interested in is the hopefull positive effect on ride, reduced impace from bumps and harshness to level changes. Comments appreciated.

Gripper -

My experience tells me that you may get some minor improvement with new tires/rims and endless air pressure adjustments, but the problem lies not with the tires but the tuning of the suspension. Hard to decide if it's worth the time and money.

I'm sure glad my Genesis doesn't have these suspension issues. :D

Amen to that! I'm curious though if anyone has the real inside scoop on the alleged 2010 modifications. There certainly are times I wish my 4.6 was a little more gentle. But I agree, mine doesn't exhibit any of these wild ride characteristics:D

Gentle, that's a good way of putting it. Doubt they change anything for 2010, but typically manufacturers will make adjustments in 3rd year of production or 2011.
OK, so say they change the ride characteristics and soften it up a bit, than all the people who think it's too firm will be happy and all the people who like road feel will be complaining about dull Lexus like drive and body roll around corners. They can't win...

I didn't want to stir it up;)

It has been reported here that changes are coming in 2010, although it hasn't been fully substantiated. I would think long and hard though if Hyundai offered a "fix" to the first generation cars - there's too much to like the way it is.

Replace "reported" with the word "speculated". Could it happen, yes of course it's possible. Will Megan Fox go out with me, I guess it's possible. Is it likely?

FWIW, the Azera, which also received numerous complaints from owners regarding the suspension has went through 2 "suspension modifications" in its relatively short life (e.g. different shocks were released in both 2007 & 2008 aimed at curing the clunking and wallowing of the suspension). See here for more info: http://www.hyundai-forums.com/t27637-azera-owners-do-you-have-suspension-issues.htm

It's important to keep in mind that the Genesis itself will be nearly 2 years old by the time the 2010 model goes on sale in the states (it went on sale 1/2008 in Korea), so anything is possible. Honestly though, I need to test drive another Genesis to see if it rides differently because most of these comments about the suspension just ring hollow with me. I do see that it's not as soft as a LS460 or S-Class, but it's no where near what I would call unacceptably harsh. Strange.

Only if the standard suspension was significantly softer.
