So, I've been reading this forum and became very interested in buying a Genesis. I decided to go with my wife to take a test drive at Hyundai of Bloomfield, N.J, right off the Parkway.

They didn't have a 2010 3.8 at the dealership, so we took a 2009 3.8 and drove to their storage lot, which is about 5 minutes from the dealership. I drove and my wife sat in the back seat so we could see the difference in suspension between the '09 and '10.

Bloomfield ave is a pretty crappy road. Potholes, rough spots, etc. I made sure to hit the rough spots in the road so we could see how the suspension held up. From the driver's seat, everything was fine. I didn't have a problem with either car.

My wife, on the other hand, told me that the '09 3.8 felt weird - very bouncy and unsettled. On the way back in the '10 3.8, my wife said that it felt much more stable and smooth.

It's gonna be hard to pass up the 2010 Genesis now.

Side note - I went to a few dealerships and it seemed like even though they all had loaded 3.8's, they were all different. One had better leather seats, no cooled driver side, touch screen navi.... Another had the knob, cooled driver seat, ok leather. How many trim levels are there now?

Re: Suspenstion - Test Drove 2009 and 2010 Genesis back to back

There are 4 different packages, base, premium, premium plus ( touch screen navi) and tec.

I currently have a 2010 3.8 with the touch screen navi and the ride is smoother and not bouncy as the 2009 I test drove.

GEEZE when are we suffering customers that helped Hyundai get the Genesis off the ground by buying them when they were in their first year only to, in a significant number of cases, find out that they were harsh riders in anything other than smooth roads , going to be treated with some common moral decency? Hyundai listens to the wrong people, customers are the only people to listen to. MAKE IT RIGHT HYUNDAI !

Re: Suspenstion - Test Drove 2009 and 2010 Genesis back to back

I too drove two different 2009 4.6 Genesis' (a used one with 10,000 miles and a new one)--both exhibited the suspension problem on this one bumpy road I test drove on. Hard to put it into words... if I had to pick one word to sum it up... it would be "BOUNCY". It wasn't pleasant in the drivers seat--and I can only imagine how bad it was in the back seat. My dealer is going to call me once he gets some 2010s in stock and I will report back to this thread with my findings.

Re: Suspenstion - Test Drove 2009 and 2010 Genesis back to back

why do you keep coming into and reading threads about suspension and then criticize people for talking about the suspension? Please go read about cooled seats or some thread where people will stroke your ego about your purchase.

Please people, don't take the bait!!!

Why do you always come to the suspension threads and post?
Why do you do this despite the fact that you DON'T have a Genesis anymore?
Why do you ALWAYS look for these threads and can't wait to post negatively?
Because you have an agenda...that's why!

Get a life, grow up and move on...some of us "REALLY" enjoy the car! Some of us also think it's da'bomb!

You're "agenda" is really childish.
Sheesh

From what I surmise from all these discussions is that Hyundai made a running change to suspensions in cars produced after early April; and that there is no indication that Hyundai will retrofit these changes.
We have the option to update our rear suspensions at our own expense. The easiest thing to change is the rear shock. Anyone can do this in their driveway. www.Hyundaioemparts.com lists a rear shock for $126.05+shipping - not too bad a price. They list separate shocks for the 3.8 and 4.6. I have no idea what the differences are and/or which is more desirable. But to order a new shock do use a 2010 VIN number.
"Stage II" retrofit could be spring replacement using the same ordering technique. That part is listed at $65.78. Spring replacement is a much bigger task.
I have ordered twice from www.hyundaipartsdirect.com. Both orders were filled by Delray Hyunai of Delray Beach. FL. They have a special Parts Direct phone number: 561.243.3621.
As for aftermarket shocks, to my knowledge no one presently makes a replacement, BUT you just might be able to come up with a generic replacement from QA1 shocks. QA1 is a well-known supplier of hot rods and is used to making up shocks with unique measurements and fittings. Plus, I know QA1 has a shock with easily-adjustable dampening.

I don't want to speak for Doug, but the reason why people speak negatively about the 2009 is that it definitely needed improvement. Many customers and people in the automotive press (including the former editor in chief of Car and Driver) said so themselves.

The fact that Hyundai made changes to the 2010 suspension and boasted about how the suspension was improved is a testament to the fact that Hyundai agreed that the 2009 suspension needed improvement.

I wonder about the agenda of those who deny that the 2009 needed improvement. Obviously, some of these are dealers who were/are trying to unload their 2009 inventory. Not sure about those who are not dealers or not connected to Hyundai.

You definitely should replace both. The 2009 springs are overpowering the shocks, and need to be softened up, and the shocks need to be beefed up to compensate. Putting softer shocks on the 2009 would not be good idea.

I have seen the posts about a running change in 2009 model mid-year for the suspension parts. They may have made some minor adjustments, but I strongly suspect that they made more adjustments in the 2010 model year.

If you get both the 2010 springs and shocks, let us know who installed them and how it worked out.

Personally, if you have sold your Genesis because of a "harsh ride" what exactly is your point for being here? To TROLL around???

On behalf of Genesisowners.Com, we deeply regret that you did not enjoy your world class vehicle. However, even though you did not, there are PLENTY of us that do! I know that to some of you who sold your car that this may have caused a financial loss, others may not have, but please take your frustrations out on Hyundai...not members here at Genesisowners.com.

Yes, this forum is open to the public and any one who wants to post can do so. However, the moderators of this forum have vowed to keep this place clean and free of trash, spam, bad language, heavy sexual references, defamation of character, and the list goes on. Do we get paid for this...HECK no! We do it because we are enthusiast and we love our Genny's!

I firmly believe that the suspension issues...or lack there of...on the 09 Genny's have been beat to death...and yet for some reason...it just goes on...and on....and on. Mostly by the same people who's names you will find littered throughout the forum. Trust me, we ALL know who you are! Yes, you can continue to post all you want...but when my inbox becomes littered with reported posts about certain individuals and their posts...I tend to get a little heated up. Is that wrong of me?

Yes, the 2010 suspension is different...good or bad...that is up to each individual. Am I biased that my 09 suspension rides just fine to me...no. Hyundai admitted to the problem...and supposedly fixed it...so that says that their may very well have been an issue with the 09's.

From this point forward, if any of you (you know who you are) continue to trash talk than I will find myself hitting the infraction button. 3 clicks and your gone. Your IP address will be blocked from this site.

I would hate to do this to anyone...except spammers, because I believe we all want to tell our stories and share some wisdom...but some of us take it waaay to far in order to "one up" ourselves.

I am a life-loving, super-easy guy to get along with and I detest having to write things like this. I will be 30 years old in July...heck...IM STILL A KID and yet Im talking to adults like they are children.

From this point forward, if you have an issue with somebody's post...REPORT IT and let us deal with it...rather the typing off the cuff and stirring the pot. Please do this for us!

I love this site and I love our members and I LOVE my car! I want nothing but the best for genesisowners.com! Which means that I will take out the trash when need be!

God bless all of you and have a great day!

Matt

Hyundai changed (improved it according to them) the suspension for 2010. According to HMA employees on the Hyundai Think Tank website, this was done by changing the shocks and springs.

I believe the 2009 suspension issue is a legitimate topic of conversation for those who are interested is possibly swapping out their 2009 shocks and springs with 2010 parts. People should be allowed to discuss this issue without harassment from those who believe there is no problem with the 2009 suspension.

So if you want single people out for inappropriate posts, you should start with those who attack members for discussing this subject, not just those trying to defend themselves against scurrilous attacks. Those who do not want to discuss or hear about 2009 suspension issues should avoid these threads.

Believe me when I say that we have!

Defend themselves...THEY DONT HAVE TO!!!! That is what WE are here for!

Instead of (as I said earlier) "one uping" somebody...let ME deal with it.

***If you believe someone has just attacked you or your post...report it...and let us deal with it. Turn the other cheek. Do not retaliate. That is MY job.***

I have deleted the useless posts in this thread.

My message still stands.

OK, that's fair. But please don't always blindly trust people who complain to you with PM's or abuse reports about suspension issue posts. Maybe they should be told to ignore these subject areas if it bothers them.

BTW, IminPA (sp?) has posted many times on this forum even though he never bought a Genesis (bought a Volvo instead). No one ever complains about whether he is an owner, probably because he usually defends the suspension.

Doug is a former Genesis owner who lost a bundle when he sold his vehicle relatively soon after purchase. He has every right to post on this forum in an appropriate manner.

"Typing off the cuff and stirring the pot" is what makes for interesting reading. These are grown people on this site, many older than you. You do not need to be a babysitter. The main job of a moderator is to keep things on topic. If people ask stupid questions, which many are, or respond harshly, let the other members deal with them. Most sites like this have an "ignore" button. I notice you don't have one here.

People trash talking the car that don't even own one are the ones you should be dealing with. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them were being paid by the opposition. Go play golf. You sound frustrated--

No one complains about my posts because I always respect the views and opinions of others. I have always given Doug a warm greeting (I am sure he will chime in if he reads this) and inquire as to how his Milan is treating him. As you correctly pointed out, I do not own a Genesis (Lord knows I tried to, but as others here have posted, the pre-sales dealer experience was sub-par in my area). I do appreciate you pointing that Doug and I sit on opposite sides of the fence with regards to the Genesis suspension. Despite that, I enjoy seeing him here and always treat him with respect. I wish everyone could treat each other here, despite personal differences in opinion, the way Doug manage to. For heaven's sake...as good as it is, the Genesis is just a car after all. As for me, I am patiently awaiting Hyundai to improve its dealer network in my area so that I could feel comfortable buying one. For the record, the only reason I am not driving a Genesis is because of my experience. I do love the car.
