  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey everyone,

I just did a test drive today and came up with a few questions after the fact which I can't readily answer. Hoping someone here has input. Some to do with the test drive, some to do with messages I've read here in the forum.

1. During the test drive the lane-keeping functionality (hope that's the correct name - the one which auto-corrects steering to keep you in your lane) was working then a little later stopped. The salesman tried everything to re-enable it (via menus) but even though it appeared to be on, the symbol which appears in the top left corner of the driver info panel would not re-enable and the lane guidance icons on the HUD disappeared. The lane keeping function just did not engage again. Any ideas?

2. There is no remote start button on the remote. The salesman said it can be added to the car as an option. All the reading I've done seems to point at Blue Link providing the only remote start functionality that the car has. Is there no FOB-based remote start? If so, the Blue Link info I've read talks about a monthly subscription fee. Does that mean that if I want to be able to remote-start the car I'll have to pay a monthly fee to do it?

3. The advertising indicates there are 2 Android apps (one Blue Link and another one). Searching the Play store from my phone doesn't list any but searching from my computer shows a "2015 Genesis" app. According to one note I read, the app will not work with a rooted phone. Is this so?

4. The salesman could not show me live traffic on the car's nav system. He said it needs to be activated via an XM subscription. Are there any Canadian Genesis owners here who can confirm that the live traffic works and is accurate?

Thanks.

1) There is a minimum speed as well as 4 modes to the lane-departure system. Off/Haptic Only/Pre-Departure/Post-Departure. Selecting between the latter 3 requires that the car be in park and is done from the menus in the gauge cluster. The system can additionally be turned off via a button near the drivers left knee. The indicator for the system being on in general on the HUD are the two vertical white lines. There is additionally a steering wheel symbol in the HUD when it's active in the latter two modes. My best guess would be that you hadn't achieved the minimum speed for the system, but it's hard to say from the info given. I don't recall the exact speed, but it's 37ish mph.

2) No remote start on the fob. I wasn't even aware it was a dealer accessory. For me the phone/computer version makes a lot more sense. If I'm in range to use a fob (at home) then the car is garaged. At work I wouldn't be able to use a fob until I'm walking out across a parking lot already and at that point it wouldn't be of much use, ymmv.

3) The only iOS app currently available last time I checked was the bluelink one. It's possible android has another. The Genesis is fairly friendly with some other apps like spotify and pandora though.

4) Can't help, USDM here.

My guess is it is a third party remote start that they would sell on any car and is likely pricey. I doubt it is a Hyundai accessory.

1. The lane keep assist requires both speed and the car's ability to see the lane markings. If the lane markings weren't clear enough or you were driving to slow, it doesn't matter what settings are enabled. I have to say that it takes some getting used to, but makes driving the car super easy.

2. The remote start functionality is part of the BlueLink suite, but only if you get the "Remote" service package. There is a yearly fee, but you can get a 3 month trial of the two packages, "Remote" and "Destination", when you purchase a Genesis.

3. The BlueLink app does not work on the 2015 Genesis. The "2015 Genesis" app is the only app for the 2015 Genesis right now. From what I read rooted phones are having issues with the "2015 Genesis" app.

4. I'm in the US and the traffic data is really good.

Thanks everyone for the explanations.

So, what it comes down to is that if I want to be able to remote start my car I have to pay a monthly fee. That is, if I can actually install the App because according to the manual I downloaded, looks like Blue Link functionality is only available in the US.

So, what it seems to come down to is that 2015 Hyundai Genesis sold in Canada can't be remote started. Big mistake on Hyundai's part. That's enough for me to pull the 2015 Genesis out of my list of considered vehicles. Real shame because I honestly like almost everything about it otherwise. Really nice drive, good handling, comfortable, great tech (although the nav operation was merely OK), good looks, nice power especially starting from a stop.

I'll see the salesman at least once more to clarify these things. If he can show me the Android app working on my phone and demonstrate live traffic working then we're back on, otherwise that will be it as far as my foray into Hyundai land.

You might want to contact Hyundai Canada to clarify some of these issues. You can't expect a salesman to know everything (or even if you expect it, you are not going to the get it). BTW, salesman don't work for Hyundai Motors, or Hyundai Canada, they work for independently owned dealers.

Good idea. I just sent off a message to Hyundai customer care. Let's see if they can shed some light on these issues.

Try to reach out to Equus and Genesis customer care if you haven't already. There is a specific group in the customer care department just for Equus and Genesis owners.

Is that true in Canada and USA? InfiniteImp is in Canada (importer/distributor is Hyundai Canada).

The lane keeping assist system (LKAS) has been explained very well by several others. Let me add a couple of notes. Those two lines that show on the HUD representing each side of the road will be a light gray if the system does not recognize the lane demarcations. When it's sure that it knows where the left and/or right sides of the lane boundaries are, those lines will become bright white. If you've select pre or post lane departure control in the settings, then an additional icon will also appear once you've reached around 40 mph. It looks like a steering wheel, and will appear to the top left side of the dual lines.

Pre lane departure control will very gently nudge you if you get too close to the left or right side of the lane. You'd think it would be aggravating, but it's pretty helpful in most cases. If you're on a very curvy road, I do find it annoying then, because it tends to get confused and nudge when you're clearly in the center of the lane. I have not played with the post lane departure control setting.

Regretfully, that's true. And I really dislike that as well. Thankfully, the package needed for that dropped to $99 per year. It was previously $179 in my Azera, and frankly, that's too much money. I find $99 barely tolerable. BTW (and this may already have been discussed), the Genesis doesn't use the normal Hyundai Bluelink app, it uses it's own Genesis Bluelink app.

Thanks for the added explanation. I did experience the grey/white lines.. now I know what that means! The salesman had that wrong as well. What neither of us could explain is why it suddenly stopped working, even at highway speeds. Perhaps I turned it off via that button near the driver's left knee that italiabrain mentioned.

I know about the separate 2015 Genesis app and even though it's not the normal BlueLink app, it still requires a subscription right? You're right, $99 per year is just with the tolerable range. Perhaps if they can show it to me working on my phone I'll consider that. Also depends if it's $99 in Canada as well. The Blue Link manual indicates no Canadian availability which makes me think it'll be the same for this app.

Just a follow-up for anyone interested. Hyundai Canada is completely ignoring my questions. I've emailed them directly at the email address provided on the Canadian web site and also filled in the question form on the site. Nothing in 6 days. I can only assume that if I call their phone # they'll hang up on me.

Very poor customer care - and I'm not even a customer yet! I can only imagine how bad it would be if they already had my money.

Really unfortunate because the 2015 Genesis is very impressive and my test drive put it at the top of my list. However, with this sort of customer service it's all irrelevant.

I would try and call them. But keep in mind that they don't normally talk to the general public. Their job is primarily to sell cars to dealers, and to conduct advertising campaigns. Even if they do talk to you, they may not know the answers to your questions.

I must agree their Canadian customer service is non existant as in sucks big time. I emailed them 16 days ago and nada.
