Tilt Telescopic Steering Wheel

For what it is worth, I have had the entire steering column replaced and then the switch replaced on my 2010 Genesis. They worked on the car for 4 days changing as many parts as they could think of but the problem persists.

The dealer refuses to take the car back for the same issue. Not sure they can do that but they always say they will call back and don't. So I take that as refusing service.

I have bumped this up to Hyundai Consumer Affairs 1-800-633-5151. After dealing with them for over a month, they claim that the case has been moved up to the regional office and it is out of the dealer's hands. Whatever that means?

I was promised a call back from the regional office in 3 business days, well this is day 6 and no call back.

Good Luck getting this issue fixed! I am frustrated beyond belief with this.

After a couple more calls to Hyundai Consumer Affairs the dealer called me to schedule an appointment to fix the issue. They had a 2011 Genesis Sedan as a loaner ready for me. Dealer stated that they had a technical representative from Hyundai in to assist them with this issue. They told me I wouldn't see my car for a while as they were keeping it until it was fixed. I think that is because this is the third visit for this issue and I could begin lemon law proceedings if the problem persists. Anyway, this is day five for this visit and no update from the dealer. The car has been at the dealer for 9 days in total (plus I waited 3 weeks for the steering column to arrive), at least I have a loaner to drive this time. Will update once I get my car back to see if they really can fix this issue.

Was this issue ever resolved?

My 09 would not keep the memory settings on the steering wheel. They replaced a module when I went in for an oil change. Have had no issues since.

I had the "fix" done to my 09s steering wheel and it was fine for a couple of weeks. Now it appears to be doing the same thing again. Its range of motion is fine, however, when I start the car it is almost always lower than where it was last time I drove the car. I am not having it fixed again. I don't have tech, so I can't shut off easy-exit. I am thinking about setting it where I want it, then pulling the cover off and pulling the power plug from the motor. Its really annoying to have to reset the wheel every time I get into the car.

I know how you feel but it is under warranty. I would take it back and get it corrected. Everything on the car should work as advertised. Did the sales person tell you that after a few weeks of purchase you could exspect some of the features to stop working? They can fix it and you deserve for it to be fixed right.

Thanks, you are right. They should fix it. I guess I'll mention it on my next service in a few months. The only real irritating thing is, they will confirm it not working right and then I'll have to make a return trip after whatever part they order is in. I still can't believe that on non-tech package cars the easy-exit can't be disabled. I have pressed the dealer on it, maybe, I'll try a call to Hyundai.

No, sorry to say that the issue has not been resolved. I did hear back from the Dealer on 10/1 (8 days after dropping my car off this time) but instead of telling me that the car was repaired, they just wanted the loaner back. I don't think they are getting it back until the car is repaired.

Be careful about the loaner. Somtimes the agreement is that you will return the car at a certain time and failing to do so can lead to rental charges for every day that it is not returned even in the case of a loaner. At least let the dealer know your concern with turning in the loaner with out your car being repaired. Stay one step ahead and work with the dealer it will pay off down the road if you have to seek a buy back. It is better when you work with the dealer even when it seems that they are not working with you, just remember some medicine may taste bad but it usually gets the job done.
Good Luck................

Wanted to provide an update. I did get the car back yesterday (10/6/2010) which was 13 days after dropping it off. The steering wheel (telescoping and up/down operation) is working correctly, at least for now. The dealer didn't give me a problem about the loaner. Instead, they promised, in writing, that they would provide a free polymer coating on the exterior and a free scotch guard and leather treatment on the interior. Hyundai, not the dealer, has promised to make my next car payment.

I hope this is the final fix, I like the car and do not want to have to press a lemon law in Florida. As long as Hyundai and the dealer keep working with me I guess it won't come to that.

My advice is if you can live with out it turn off the easy access steering and seat. This is what I did after I got mine fixed and after two months when I check it it still works just fine. May be there will be a better fix down the road that will envolve a new TSB being issued.

I finally made an appointment (which is today) to have Hyundai look at my tilt steering problem. It almost always fails to go back to the memory setting and sometimes the adjustment control knob does not respond. If I bump the steering wheel I can get it to work most of the time. Anyway, they told me it would take anywhere between 2 - 2 1/2 hours for the diagnostic. They said it could be anything from the limit switches to the entire steering column. We'll see what they say today.

Had all that done and it still does not work

That is not very encouraging. I'm at the dealership as I write this. I'll update when they get back with me.

2010 4.6 Genesis was in the dealer for 4 days to fix driver seat as it was making a grinding noise going backwards only. they lubed the worm gear and its better for now. Also had it in to fix, for the 2nd time, the power tilt. which by the way wasn't fixed as they claim the tilt module is on back order country wide. Hyundai Corporate are not providing any dates when the modules will be available. Must be an awful lot of problems with the power tilt to be out of parts country wide or they're stocking up for a major recall???

This is my first Hyundai and I'm concerned I may have a POS lemon on my hands... we'll see...

Well, so far so good on the fix. They replaced both switches. We'll see if it lasts as some say that after a couple of weeks it starts to malfunction again. I'll post if it fails again.

My steering wheel problem reached the point that the wheel stayed in the up position and would not respond to the memory buttons. I had it repaired a few days ago--7 hours. I sure hope this doesn't happen again. The seat heater is a disaster and the lumbar support failed. That was repaired today, but I am not sure it is any better. My impression with the Hyundai service department is that it is not competitive with any luxury car dealership. Right now, I am regretting buying the Genesis.

Well, I just took my Genesis in for an oil change and the tilt steering wheel issue. When I made the appt. over the phone, I asked for a rental since I knew this would be an all day event and he (The Service Manager) said he would have to get approval for that. He calls back and says, ok I got the rental for you and the part is in. Ok great...thinking, I'll get a Genesis. Maybe 2011 to check out. The day of the appt., I get there and the service guy doesn't know about the rental. Service Manager comes out and says "oh yeah...he has rental...Enterprise will come and pick you up". Okkkaaayyy...guess no Genesis even though there were about 10 sedans on the lot. Waited for Enterprise...nobody shows up. The dealership decides to shuttle me over there where they "hook me up" with a Hyundai Elantra. Later that day the car was fixed (as of now) and I had to return the car back to Enterprise where they then drove me back to the dealership. Remember, my dealership was doing me a "favor". :-O

At least my Genesis was fixed in one day.

BTW, I said to the regular service guy that checked me in "you know...if Hyundai wants to compete for BMW or Lexus owners, don't you think the least you could do is offer a rental car and not have to haggle for it? He didn't have much to say.

In the end, I hope this solves the intermittent steering wheel issue.

Always speak to the owner/general manager about issues like this. The Service Manager has no power to change policy.

Well my Genesis is going back in for the fourth time to fix the tilt on the steering wheel. I was so sure that the last fix was a good one that I had the car re-badged. The wings are really nice (front, back and wheels). Now I am debating whether or not to file the paperwork for the Florida Lemon Law. The car has already spent 17 days at the dealership for this issue during the last three visits to fix this. In Florida, its three unsuccessful fixes or 15 days out of service to apply for help via the lemon law. I am hoping Hyundai offers a solution before I have to wait for arbitration. Will let you know what happens.
