  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

It is my understanding that the TPMS units located at the air valve location of each wheel do not need any resetting after tire changes (as long as the units were not damaged in tire changing). My understanding is that they reset themselves after a few minutes of driving.

IS THIS SO? (Also never had to reset them when rotating tires).

Many tire dealers say that the TPMS needs to be reset using their special tool, when changing tires, but I always tell them that the TPMS on the Genesis does not work that way.

I could be wrong. What say you?

To my knowledge, they don't need to be reset.
It needs to relearn and sync to the transponder when new sensors are installed or when the same sensors are installed to a different wheel location, but not when you change out a tire.
At least it's like that on GM vehicles.
Not sure if it's the same with Hyundai, but the sensor being supplied by TRW, I doubt that it's any different.

As far as sensor's reading algorithm, it'll probably update the reading every couple miles or so, or upon ignition on.
Just see if it throws any warning messages.

I changed one of the Dunlops yesterday, because there was a screw in the side of the tire, that could not be patched. I ordered the tire from tire rack and had it shipped to a local installer who charged me 15 bucks to install it. The TPMS monitors do not need to be touched unless they are damaged, nor do thy have to be reset. The only thing that some people recommend is a TPMS kit which changes the bleeder valve due to corrosion, it's $3.50 a tire pretty much unnecessary until the car is getting old. Or getting all new tires.

Dan & TJ,

Thanks for the information.

TJ, seeing as how most of our cars have not been driven in winter salt, I don't think we have to worry about bleeder valve corrosion.

It's pointless where I live, but it's so cheap that when the time comes where you are paying $1000 to get 4 new tires, what's $14 bucks? Either way, the place where I took it didn't even bother to ask.

I had a flat and somehow the sensor was knocked off. The dealer quoted $225 for a new senor and to reprogram, does this sound fair? I seems really out of line and I am thinking of just not replacing the senors since of really does not impact the car at all. What do you think?

Call other dealers' parts dept. and check price. a tire store can install it for you. 225 is way too much.
