Transmission problems

I had my fluid and trans filter changed on my ZF trans in the 2011 4.6 at least 6 months ago and have put more than 10k miles on the car. This was done at 80kish. The trans seems to shift a little smoother-could be my imagination. But I still sometimes have the 1st gear lurch
And yes I used official ZF lifeguard fluid and filter. Replacement is not that big a deal if you have a life and can monitor the level when the trans comes to temp.

What was the cost? The ZF transmission on the 2011 4.6 has the filter integrated in the transmission pan, so the entire pan/filter must be replaced to change the filter. I caught my dealer(which is no longer my dealer) doing the service but not replacing the pan/filter. My old dealer's tech and service manager did not know the car had the filter made into the pan.

I hate making my first post here about an issue but I am at my wits end with this one and I'm really hoping someone has seen something similar. I have a 2013 R-spec sedan with 42K on the clock. I've owned this car since 8 miles were on it. I've recently noticed that I've got several issues that I believe are stemming from the transmission. Of course they are intermittent and the dealer has claimed they cannot duplicate the issue. I can do it at will if I need to. Here are my issues
Whine from the tranny. Very slight but its there. In any other car I've owned the whine means bad things.

Every so often it feels like it slams into gear. revs go up. Car doesnt go. Then it catches up. there is no clunk it just doesnt engage it feels like. mostly from a stop but I have seen this once or twice merging on the highway.

Here is the major one. The car shutters and shakes at low speed and in between gears 3-4 mostly. Speeds range from 20-30MPH. Most noticeably when going uphill. It's almost like the car doesn't seem to know its supposed to shift and it has that manual transmission feel of being in too high a gear for the speed. I also get a feeling of driving on rumble strips at time until the car shifts.

The last thing I've noticed ist hat the car kind of bangs into a shift. I never noticed this and in fact had trouble telling what gear i was in. Now I know just about every shift. Especially if i accelerate hard to merge or to pass. that 5-6-7-8 shift is more like thud thud thud thud.

Has anyone experienced these issues? I'm getting really fed up with this and i'd like to be able to get it fixed. I love my car but there are far too many cars out there that I can replace it with that would make me just as happy and I'm not particularly enjoying the possible blow out of a tranny on the high way or hours from home.

I have no idea. The dealer jerked me around for about a month on it and stuck me in a piece of crap Dodge Journey loaner for the duration. So much for that Genesis loaner while it was in right? I got Hyundai involved. They basically poo pooed me and did nothing. I also had some paint chip and rust issues that they told me previously they'd warranty until I finally pushed them to do so then they blamed me for it. Hyundai again did nothing. At that point I'd had enough. I took it back went to the gmc dealer and traded it in on a 2016 Sierra Denali. They dealt with it from there. Took a serious bath on trade but I don't have to worry about t anymore. This was my family's fourth Hyundai and last. Shame i was treated the way I was.
I am actually going through the similar thing right now too couple of weeks ago I took in my Hyundai Genesis coupe 2.0 T in because it was shifting very hard and second they they were able to get an updated computer system in the transmission which made it run better for two weeks. I ended up having to take it in again for the exact same problem today for the clunking in second gear and now they're going to ask the service advisor for their opinion. I hope this helps

There was a manufacturing design defect in 2012, the first year that the Hyundai 8-speed transmission was produced. The change needed to fix it was "relatively" minor, but required a new transmission. You should not have any problems with your replacement transmission that are related to the original problem, and after 2012 there have not been a lot of reported transmissions problem.

As to whether you have anything to worry about now, you would have to provide a lot more information about your life situation, your family, etc.
Do you have any links to information on said defect? possibly one from Hyundai? I am having the same type of issues although mine isn't that severe yet but I know it will be. Trying to get info that Hyundai is aware of this as a defect so I can better coerce them to replace it "under warranty" even though I am currently outside of my 2nd owner 5/60,000 manufacturer warranty. I was able to get my ABS module replaced "under warranty" this way when it had the same issues as the recall but my VIN didn't qualify for the recall. If I can get some proof Hyundai knows of this issue I might get lucky with the trans as well

Hi,

I have a Hyundai Genesis coupe 2013 and I had a few transmission issues and I went in and they fixed or updated the computer and it seemed like it was helping it considerably with the whining on my car I think it was the Turbo that makes that whining sound on occasion.

Do you still have you Genesis?

Are you still bnb having those issues?

I have a 2012 genesis with 74000 kms (45000 miles) with a very similar, if not the same problem. I took it to Mr Transmission and they felt partly because of it being an intermittent problem that it was likely not mechanical. They suggested I take it to the dealer and have the softwear updated. After having the softwear updated, it seemed to run smoother for about 2 weeks and then started slipping again. I feel that this is likely a problem related more to a transmission control module or something along that line. In any event I feel that a small claims court would look favorably upon a lawsuit if the vehicle had low mileage was under 8 yrs old and had been properly maintained. Unfortunately I don't personally have the time to be bothered with it. Too bad though because its a nice vehicle otherwise.

It's funny you say that because I had a similar thought and experience. They reset the learning on my TCU which made it drive horribly for a bit but I guess it was learning. Then it smoothed out after a few days but now it's back to a clunky 2 to 3 shift like before. I'm thinking as well that it could be the TCM and luckily I had ordered the BTR ECU/TCU tune months back and just got it in... well they load it on a brand new genuine Hyundai ECU and TCU meaning when I replace the TCU I have in there now, it could potentially solve the problem because it's a new unit going in. Crossing my fingers

Had the same problem with my 2012 5.0 rspec. Had the transmission replaced by the dealer. Car has no problems now.

You’ve got to be kidding regarding small claims court after driving any car for 8 years. Get the car fixed, live with it, or move on.

My ‘12 Genesis 3.8 also has about 45,000 mi on the clock. I have an extended warranty that cost me $1,295.00 and lasts till August 2024, or 120,000. My wife loves the car and gives it limited use. Our primary daily driver is now a ‘19 Santa Fe Ultimate. It’s the luxury vehicle that Hyundai still hasn’t managed to deliver to the clamboring masses.

Does anyone have any links to prove there was a defect in the 2012 8 speed transmissions?? So far I have not been able to find anything

I have a 2013 Genesis, and experience the exact same problem. I had the fluid flushed and changed. It seemed to help for a little while. The dealer reset the computer. It helped for a while but it seems to degrade after 120,000 miles.

I hope you like your Denali. I am considering getting a I am considering getting a Ford Mustang 2020 or 2021 to try something new to get out of a Hyundai also.

I realize this is an old thread at this point, but I've spent almost 2 hours searching and this is the only mention I could find of this particular design defect issue. I have a 2012 Genesis 4.6 I purchased a year ago, it currently has 80k miles, and I am now having the symptoms of slipping and slamming into gear that seem to be not uncommon.

Mark_888, can you tell me how or where you got the information about the design defect on the 2012 transmission? And/or can you point me to where I can get more information about it, myself?

As I am not the original owner, I realize the full warranty did not transfer to me and that the limited warranty has now expired. So it seems I'm facing a significant challenge in resolving this problem. Any recommendations on how to proceed would be welcome. TIA

Been waiting for that guy to reply for a while now... I dont think the info is actually available on the web. I think he just said that as a general consensus on this forum is that there is a design flaw since it has happened to so many of us

Don’t hold your breath waiting for Mark888 to respond. He is not here anymore. He’s driving a Toyota nowadays. Besides, he has no info that would solve your problem. See a Hyundai dealer, or a transmission shop.

Thanks for the interpretation and the update. Makes sense.

Had the same problem with my 2012 5.0 rspec. Had the transmission replaced by the dealer. Car has no problems now.

My transmission broke with only 64k on the car. I just replaced it with one from another201250 R Spec that had only 52k and now it's shifting hard in 2nd. I did that replacement because I got the tranny for a good price and 6 month warranty on the part from the salvage yard. I couldnt afford the reman tranny they wanted to install for $4000. cause I just bought my car 2 weeks before it broke...no warranty. Did you have yours replaced for free under warranty ? Any suggestion for a poor schmuck like me who just bought a car, fell in love with it and is burning $ trying to keep it on the road with no warranty ? Im gonna have to trade her in if I cant figure this out. Did they put a new, reman tranny in ? ugh.

You have to replace it with a 13 or 14 hyundai 8 speed, the 12s are the problem. Supposedly they made revisions to the 13s and 14s but never told anyone about it cause its seldom that those model years have bad trannies but its rampant in the 2012 model year. Hyundai knows about it and that's why everyone under warranty just got a new trans if they found any problems with it... but outside of warranty? Be prepared to spend a pretty penny for a new unit but junk yards and ebay are your friend here for a good used unit
