In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I have a 2013 Genesis sedan and the Transmission has intermittent problems shifting problems between 2 - 3 and 4 - 5th gear. I will be driving and the shift will pause then slams into gear. I heard software update does not help and not aware of transmission recall but it’s dangerous!! Anyone else had similar problems?

What is mileage do you have on the vehicle?
Does it happen all the time?
Or when car is hot/cold? in traffic?
Might be worth while to get a dealer to check the out and perhaps try to change any necessary fluids.

Hi David-

I’m at 109k miles so it’s out of warranty, but this should have been a recall given the knowledge of this on going issue in the earlier Genesis models.

I had the transmission fluid changed and the software updated and the problems continue. I was hoping the software update would have helped the transmission better communicate with the vehicle on when to shift or not.

It seems to happen more frequently as the engine gets warmer and used throughout the day.

any guesses on why that is? Or what it could be?
Thanks Mark

I had similar but slightly different problem with the 4.6 6 speed ZF auto around 106k, even after they flushed and flashed the TCU, it kept doing the same things you described.
I ended up resetting everything by disconnecting the battery for 24 hours, driving it to the dealer and trading her for the 2015 5.0, as I couldn’t bear the thought of spending $$$$ on a new transmission swap...
It looks like you have done everything you could without taking the transmission apart and without warranty, this could get expensive to replace the transmission.

Your call and good luck.

Hi David-

Thank you for your advice and input. I believe that is my only option at this point. I know this was a major fault with the 1st generation of the Genesis, but I hear the 2nd and newer generation Genesis vehicles are near flawless!

Hi Mark,

My Genesis is doing the exact same thing. Any update on yours? Thanks!

My genesis 2015 have the exact same problem until yesterday it completely won’t move when I put it on D then when I put it on R it moves ,so only it drives on reverse now i have been looking for a transmission from eBay but it’s not cheaper at al

With the caveat that my experience with this (or similar) issue is 12 years old, my 3.6 V6 2009 Genesis had a shifting issue within a month of purchase. I took it back to the dealer, and they fixed it. It remained fixed until I sold it 100,000+ miles and 12 years later.

They told me it was caused by a faulty oxygen sensor, replaced under warranty. My impression was that the oxygen sensor controlled engine rpm's, which when uncontrolled, paired up the transmission with inappropriate speeds, causing slammed or delayed shifting. Sorry to be vague, it was a long time ago.

I have read a number of similar complaints and no one mentioned this. My general observation is that I haven't found that technicians today are smarter than they were 12 years ago.

So I may have the worst luck or the best luck depend on how you look at it. I just purchase 2013 and 500 miles later transmission is acting up like you said, the dealership had the car, so far they just flushed the transmission, but it still doing it. They may bring the car to a transmission shop and hopefully I get a brand new transmission. imagine that, paid 15 grand for the car and having a $5000 job, the dealership is losing big money lol.

Edit: got a call from them, they got me a used transmission...wtf?

I have the same issue, bumping post to see if anyone has figured it out

Shift solenoid issue. I resolved this by having a local transmission shop replace the shift solenoid assembly. It’s been problem free for the last 15k miles.

Can you clarify if it was just the solenoids that you replaced or the whole assembly with the valve body/tcm too

Did you have the TSB they recommend done (they replace 2 of the solenoids (see attachment) or did you have them all replaced ? Valve body ? I see Amaanjan is asking you the same questions.. Please respond ! Thanks 🙏👍

Thanks for your post brother. I have actually swapped the transmission out twice at this point and all of them act the same way.. super delayed second to third gear shift and then weird between 4th and 5th also. That said I can't imagine that it's actually the transmissions It's got to be something on the car itself. I've been doing research and found that possibly the transmission speed sensor could be affecting it but the car has no codes and no errors when it was scanned by a professional transmission specialist. I'm trying desperately to get this fixed so when you mentioned O2 sensor, and that your car was all better afterwards it gave me hope again. Is there any chance that you could find out exactly what part or O2 sensor it was on the car ? Any information would be helpful thank you so much for your effort and time.

I'm very new here, but I feel your pain with this.

So most of you know better, but for some reason I went against my better judgement, and went to the dealership. If you do not know already, do not ever ever ever ever ever ever go to a dealership if you are experiencing this issue and have no codes, go to an actual transmission shop with good ratings that has actual transmission master techs.

My car had the intermittent shifting issues you all are describing, but it was mostly delayed shifts, and soft confused shifts at low RPMs only between 20-40mph.

Get a reman valve body, swap that out on the unit you have if it is a low miles unit, and that should fix it.
Or you can roll the dice by replacing some parts on the valve body you have, like the solenoids, and hope that works.

If you do not want to throw parts at a part, and you do not want a salvage unit, and are looking for a reman lvl unit, then you already know that a reman ZF unit for gen 1 V8 is nearly impossible to find in the entire US right now. If anyone needs an almost reman lvl ZF unit for the 09-12 sedan, I have it listed for sale here
I have all the paperwork for it. Im over it unless my salvage suddenly breaks on me, but I waited half year before listing this unit to see how well the salvage would hold up. The FS unit needs an actual reman valve body for ~$600, and then at that point it is a near reman lvl rebuild.
