trunk and horn

I believe I've changed every door lock and unlock function several times. My wife has driven the car several times now with the current setting so today I document position setting and change them again. I've also molded a guard to fit over the dashes trunk open/closing switch rather then ask for the switches removal. Now it is impossible to "bump" without knowing it or to accidentally active the "sensitive" switch. Btw, the whole problem started when we unlocked all other doors, with the inside door switch...before putting the car in gear. Thus the unlock setting had to have been set to initially only unlock the drivers door for entry!:(

Once again, just troubleshooting:
Never having experienced this, my positions are "unlock all from any door by putting my hand between the handle and car body", and "lock automatically when car starts to move (6-8mph)". Try that for a while and let us know.

So Mr Grit, any news if the guard is working?
I'm still having the problem occasionally, but I still think that I'm accidentally hitting the button with my body or clothes.

Good luck.

I have a2011 equus ultimate and have had the trunk issue as well. I know without a doubt that I did not hit the trunk release button. The last occurrence was last week and I was in the house with my keys resting on a counter untouched. I have not contacted Hyundai as of yet and still find this to be occurring randomly and has only happened about four times since my purchase about three months ago. I have not played with any switches or settings as of yet and refuse to do so. There should be no reason this should happen under any circumstance. If it continues or begins to happen more regularly I will have to bring the car in for service and let them figure it out. I originally thought it was operator error until this last incident. I am in Hollywood fl.

Well it happened again. To my wife this time. While she was backing out of a parking spot, so obviously the car was in motion. Now it seems my hand has been forced and I will have to address the issue. Has anyone on here had any resolution as of yet or is the problem still occurring? Are any of you with this problem in South Florida. I am asking as I wanted to know if any of you are dealing with the same dealership as I do.

No resolution and I don't think there will be. Here's why: Jenkins service manager says I'm hitting the switch on entry and he says he saw me do it!(I don't think I did.) Disregaurding the fact, that the trunk has opened "prior to entry," he reported to the Distric Parts and Service Manager in Atlanta what he says he saw and they both now say they will not attempt to fix this "alleged problem" until they see it occur. Mr. Mike Donahoo, Atlanta still maintains there has not been other reported trunk opening ... Other then hitting the switch with the knee or clothing. Finally we were able to find the door setting that allows only the drivers door to unlock with the drivers outside door handle. This setting I want for security reasons since my wife drives the car most of the time. When she's entering, we don't want all door to unlock. This was also the original driver door unlock setting when the trunk problem first occurred. In the menu setting, it is called "twice unlock." Now about the guard I've installed over the switch. It works well and will narrow the search. (If I could figure out how to put pictures on here I would do so.) Without lots of screams to Hyundai Consumer Affairs, from others experiencing trunk opening problems mine will never be corrected. The likely hood of the car being in service and having the trunk pop open is just a bit remote...don't you think? Having the problem happen twice in succession is also remote, and they know it. Once the trunk is opened, closes, ignition turned off, doors opened and closed, that spurious signal is long gone. Im spreading the word about this problem to everyone looking at or asking about the car.

Grit:
I think unlocking the driver's door only (as opposed to all) is a false sense of security. A bad guy with bad intentions will be going for her/open door if that's all that's available. Unless I'm missing something.
Anyway, good luck with this. Though I'd certainly document the problem with Customer Care or whatever it's called, including the attitude of Jenkins and the Region. Possibly even a certified letter to the CEO of Hyundai US.
The car is too nice to put up with attitudes or lack of effort on their parts. I suspect Corporate wouldn't appreciate it either. But to "warn" potential buyers away from the car is a disservice too. You are among only a handful to experience this, even on the limited sample size of this forum.
Good luck!

An aquaintence had her car jacked, by a guy who jumped into her car through the right rear passenger door, just as she entered and sat in the drivers seat. Obviously he was hidding on the "other side of the car." The story gets worse, much worse. Could it have been prevented by only unlocking the drivers door? Law enforcement thought so and said "it would have been rather hard to choke the driver if he could not have entered the vehicle so easily." Ill stick with my settings of only unlocking the drivers door until Im ready for someone else to join me.

Now, when someone asks me about the car, they get the truth. I like the car but im having this "trunk opening problem," and after 4 months have not yet had it corrected. They get the whole story, ... intermintent problem, but always the plain simple truth. The Equus is new and given time in service everything should improve. I think its a keeper!

If I knew the Name of the CEO and where to send my "complaint," I would do so. Normal channels haven't brought me any satisfaction.

Thanks for the info. I must say that I was pleasingly surprised to receive a call from Mr. Mike Donahoo in Atlanta yesterday morning. His call left me with the feeling that Hyundai "is aware" and "working on a solution" to the trunk opening problem. I was informed that there are a couple different modules in use and now that "they seem" to understand whats happening ... there actually may be a fix... Someday! Im grateful for his call. NOTE: Since putting "my guard" over the switch there have been no surprise trunk openings??

Ive had the trunk open, by itself, 4 times now. Each time after being parked for more than an hour and up to 24. Hyundai has been notified and I was given a case number. The local service department is stumped but would like to correct the problem if nothing else to keep be from comming back!;) Been there 3 times now. A different problem has also occured with the trunk. I attempted to open it with the trunk latch handle...it unlanched but wouldn't power up. I lifted it up, against resistance, then it closed with the truck closer button on the lid. Closure was normal. This is getting annoying, not to mention embarassing!:(

To all: Just a thought; there being so many, many devices on the market today with electronic, remote activation the problem may be that there simply isn't enough access codes to maintain individualality in each and every one of them. Case-in-point, you may be in a parking lot and someone else is also in the same parking lot who pushes their key fob to unlock the doors of their Chevy Impala and suddenly your trunk opens. This isn't really all that unusual, as is evidenced by the number of identical problems some folks have with garage door openers. Again, just a thought!

I agree with your "only unlocking the drivers door" setting. Nothing is an absolute protection but every little bit helps and just might make the difference. That said, I got to get back into my bible and locate the setting for my information. My ultimate came with the "only unlocking the drivers door" setting.

Don't know if anyone ever got their trunk opening problem solved. I had the same problem with my ultimate. Finally discovered that sometimes when entering or exiting the drivers seat my knee or more likely the knee area of my blue jeans was lightly brushing against the the trunk switch and thereby opening the trunk. That switch appears to be more sensitive than any of the other switches located in that area of the dash and the slightest bit of pressure activates it. Never felt my knee actually touching the switch but after figuring out what was happening I make a conscious effort to avoid letting my knee or pants leg come in contact with the switch. The same thing can happen if one is just sitting and/or driving the car and lightly brush against the switch-don't have any idea anything has happened until you happen to clance in the rearview mirror. I spoke to the service department about placing some sort of guard over the switch or replacing the switch with one that is not so sensitive-have not gotten an answer back yet so I guess they have not heard back from Hyundai regarding my complaint

Have had the trunk open up several times when parked and locked at home. Finally discovered this happened only when I arrived home and left the fob in my pocket. Think that somewhere during my activities button(s) were pressed on the fob by other items in my pocket and the signal is withing range of the car. Now I just make sure to remove the fob from my pocket when arriving home.

Trying to find a protective pouch of some sort I can put the fob in when I am away from home and hang it on my belt to eliminate any un-intentional button pressing. Was surprised to find out how far away and without a clear line of sight one can be and the signal from the fob still reaches the car.

Still remember my trying to figure out what was happening when trying to lock and unlock the car when I first brought it home. I had left the packet with the manuals in the car so they would be there for my reference and forgot that the spare fob was also in the packet. All sorts of strange things happen with the spare fob in the car including it never being locked/secured.

Don't you folks be too hard on me! I transitioned from a 1977 Chevrolet Caprice to a 2011 Equus Ultimate without any stops in between. So all these buttons, alarms, etc. is a completely new world to me-definitely in a catchup mode.

Hi All,
I also have 2011 Equus Ultimate and having exact same issues with my trunk.
I have uploaded this video on the Youtube to show what is happening with my car. As you can see, as I was trying to sit in the car, the yellow light was on, which indicates my trunk is opened.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ze2ASPwH_0"]Equus trunk - YouTube[/ame]

Also, I have talked to Hyundai regional rep and Equus hotline, but they saying either they can't open my video or they don't believe in this video.

I can take this kind of video almost everyday because it happens at least once a day. Now, I don't even need to sit in the car to pop the trunk.

Hyundai folks should realize that we all have brand new Equus and making false statement about this trunk is not giving us anything. We already have new car.

Also, many of you talk about hitting the button with your knee and etc. Please!!! Unless you are 7ft tall, it's not possible.

I have BMW, Benz and all have remote or smartkey and none of them opens the trunk regardless if they are in my pocket or not. Also, I have Genesis in Korea and has exact same key, but never pop the trunk.

I have been told by Hyundai R&D department that some chip in the FOB could cause this trouble of trigering the trunk to be popped, but they are refusing to replace the key to see if that fixes the problem.

I will continously upload any videos that I take and hope they will fix the problem.

I think at least in my case I found a correlation. I stopped using the button on the door handle and the trunk no longer opens on me. I only use the remote and it has not opened in months unless the door button was used. When I use that button is when I seem to have it potentially open. I am trying to remember to use it only in my driveway so if it opens I am not out and I try to keep a watch out and see if it does open and see if there is an amount of time that passes before it does or any common elements. I have not been reliable about using the button at home though as I very rarely lock my car in the driveway or my hands are full and cant. See if this works for any of you and perhaps there is an issue with that method of locking the door.

Hi All,
Another video to share with you.

I hope hyundai will listen soon and do something about this nonsense.

They claim they will come to your home to sell Equus, but they refuse to fix your car.
Hyundai is making serious mistake here.

No trunk opening problem for 6 weeks now. I did 2 things, first I put all settings back to the way the car was delivered. (looked at a Equus on the show room floor to get those setting) Secondly, I placed a guard over the dash trunk open/close switch. This prevents accidental touching of the switch. Shortly I will remove my home made guard and see what happens.

When I posted the message about my knee hitting the switch when entering and/or leaving the car I was only informing whoever that was what caused my problem with the trunk opening. And I am 5'll" not 7' tall. Since my last post the problem has occurred only once and I was aware before it opened that I had accidently touched the switch with my knee. I believe this is only one of the issues associated with this problem that perhaps Hyundai will address someday.

Re: trunk opening

In Sept 2011 I first reported that my Trunk Lid was opening on its own. (See all my posts.) 16 Months later the problem is still there, although not as frequent, since I placed a guard over the switch to prevent accidental contact. About once every other month or so the trunk pops open. Ive given up complaining ... so I guess Hyundia won!

I have also had the same problem with the trunk on my 2013 Equus ultimate. I thought it was the key also. It usually happens when I get in the car. I make it a point o keep clear of the trunk release. It did happen once while backing up.
