Hello fellow Genesis owners,
After sending out the below listed correspondence & information to the powers that be on my / our surround sound settings not remaining checked after each ignition start. I recieved the below information that indicates an update / upgrade to our existing Lexicon systems is in the works. This is what I prefer rather than tearing out the unit and installing a new one. Below you will find a good contact e-mail who seems to be in the know if you have any further questions, hope this gives those of us that have this issue some encouragement.
The contact person at Harman was: John [john.mcmullen@harman.com]

Subject: 2012 Genesis Sedan R-Spec

RE: Lexicon Premium Audio 2012 Hyundai Genesis Sedan R-Spec,

I am a recent owner of the above vehicle with the Lexicon 17 speaker configuration. Many units being shipped by lexicon do not retain their surround sound setting on various sources forcing the customer to re-set the surround sound check box every time after each new ignition start. Many customers are having their entire head unit replaced at a great cost to the company. Is their another way to re-flash the system to allow it to function properly? Is this a Hyundai (HMA) error done by their programmers’ or lexicon’s? Either way I do not care to chase this issue in circles.

Please note the links below for more information.

Sincerely,
Tim

Hello Tim,

Thank you for your e-mail. Harman and Hyundai Motors are currently in the process of addressing the situation that you are describing below. If you would like, I can inform you as to when a software update is available.
Kind regards,

John

Yes, please inform me when the update / upgrade is available. Curious what time frame are you looking at? Will it a few days or a few weeks or months?
How will this update be implemented, via Hyundai service dept., disk or USB?

Sincerely,
Tim

Hello Tim,

Updated software was submitted to Hyundai today. However, the responsible engineer is out of the office until Monday. I would suspect approval of the update would not take more than 1 – 2 weeks. I however do not know what format and timing of it being released to the Hyundai service centers and then to the vehicle owners. I will certainly keep you updated as information comes my way. I would suggest you touch base with me in 2 – 3 weeks if you have not received an update from me.

Kind regards,

John

Awesome!! Thanks for the excellent info!! You may also wish to post it here.

This is very good news!......now if we could just get Bluetooth audio ;)

News update everyone. The issue with surround sound not staying checked between ignition starts for all audio sources has been resolved and I know others have went this same route:

The dealer ordered a new head unit and installed it without issue and all is as it should be. It retains the surround setting just the same with midrange, bass and treble etc. customer preferences settings.

The update for these units as posted earlier in this post may happen at some point if one wants to wait...
Now having said that it's back to full on rocking out in this amazing ride I have come to love like a good friend.

So are you saying that the issue has NOT been resolved and that our only option is to get a new head unit? That seems to be the route you took...

The issue was resolved with replacement of the head unit under warranty. My preference would of been an update of course but then who knows when this will occur, as the update process appears to be caught in red tape. Therefore I made a choice to go this route. You may contact John [john.mcmullen@harman.com] further if you desire, personally I tried all I could to escalate this update but without any definitive timelines a change out seemed the best route to take as per my local dealer service manager's advice.

Remember knowledge is power at times and if you wish to take this same route as I & others rather than wait for an undate, that if the dealer tell you that it is operating as designed (as was one of our own on this site before), be sure to push the issue because it can be resolved and function as intended. If you have to just do a print off of a few of these pages & take them with so they know your not a push over.

PS: A point to ponder though was that I was told the unit was replaced ok "but" the head units radio ID number (ESN) did not change so that has me perplexed as each new head unit I assumed had it's own unique (ESN) ID number. The dealer is sending my paperwork in the U.S.P.S. mail and did not give it to me at the time of service. So maybe that will enlighten me more. I know they did something because the unit functions correctly retaining all settings and I had to re-program all of my Sirrus/Xm stations & all my prior navigational settings & previous memory locations was wiped. IMHO it apprears the unit has 2 parts: the "radio tuner" where the radio ID (ESN) number appears and then the other unit where the CD/DVD, XM and navigational electronics & settings are housed.

Looks like I'll be asking for a new head unit at my first oil change.

Interesting, thanks. I may have to go this route too.

Your welcome. Initially I was hesitant & afraid they would potentially damage adjoining panels etc. But the switch out went surprisingly easy and the time it took was under an hour. Feels great this little quirk behind me with nothing to aim my flaw finger at anymore I feel like I won the lotto lol.

I noticed that the option of the easy seat access was not available after the head unit replacement and under the info button an added option of "air suspension settings" was added, but of course this model has no air suspension.

Luckily as I was at the dealer earlier in the week a Hyundai engineer was there doing his rounds and he easily went into the head units service settings and turned on the easy seat access and turned off the air suspension option.

Too bad the service dept. did not know this because they almost ordered another head unit which would of been redundant. The service man stated also there is a DVD update available but did not pertain to my unit, and/or my unit already had the update.

As I remember awhile back some of you mentioned after the swap you had the air suspension option as well and may not have noticed you lost the easy seat access. Either way hope this added info benefits all.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
My first replacement head unit (second is on the way) used the same ID number also. So far all the replacement head units reported here have lost both the steering wheel and seat access functions and gained the suspension/height settings. One of our esteemed members posted how to fix that and it is done just like your Hyundai engineer did by going deep into the service menus. But other problems have surfaced.

1) NAV voice commands no longer repeat the name of the city, state and street

2) Phone voice commands no longer repeat the name of the person being called. It on repeats the words mobile, home, or work

3) The compass on the center display has disappeared

4) The XM station display on the small center display has disappeared

Could you please check your system and let us know if these problems exist on your replacement head unit? Also, do you have touch screen NAV or the tech package. Frankly, the replacement head unit is causing more problems than my original head unit which was replaced due to the surround sound unchecked issue.

Thanks.

Sounds like it's configured for an Equus or is there an adjustable suspension on the Genesis at other locales?

The adjustable suspension menu options set what Hyundai calls "variant" settings to configure the car's electronics for the physical parts of the car. In some markets the Genesis is sold with an air adjustable suspension... unlike in the US where that was removed for cost/price targets.

From various posts on this thread and similar threads it appears the software "upgrades" sometimes loose pre-existing features... like the compass display, NAV voices, next turn & distance indicator in the NAV, etc. From what I've read, I don't think I want the NAV "upgrade" software as my early 2009/Tech has everything it's supposed to... folks with new head units (presumably with the latest software & map revisions) have lost some display items. I like that "next turn will be..." display.

I have the tech pkg. standard on the 2012 genny sedan r-spec. Not too clear about your questions 1 - 4 as there are differences between the touch screens and tech pkg. programming. For example oddly enough I cannot stream music from a cell phone to the sound system as it must be hard wired "plugged in".

As far as I can tell my current head unit, after the engineer's tweeks is functioning correctly, but I will dig further and post tomorrow as I have time if otherwise. Might be in your best interest to ask for a local Hyundai engineer to try to correct your setting before multiple head unit swap outs. Seems the service dept. is not up on this area as much yet...

I have tech too. I think you'll find that your new unit doesn't repeat the name of the person you're calling. Instead of repeating the words "call John Smith mobile" it will only say call mobile.

I'm guessing that your small, center display no longer shows the compass or XM channel when you repeatedly push the display button on your steering wheel. I managed to eliminated the useless height/suspension options on the 8" NAV display screen and restore the seat access setting.

Is it possible Hyundai is replacing our 2012 head units with an older head unit model that was designed for '09-'11 models?

What a mess. I am wondering if it is just worth sticking with what I have at this point, I am so used to the problems with it; changing surround settings, nto remembering where I was on iPod once car is restarted,.... I have been waiting for my first service to bring up the head unit problem, but it looks like Pandora's Box will be opened if I do so. I hope you guys work through all of this. I will continue to monitor your progress.

I'm taking my Genesis in tomorrow to follow up on an earlier service call - namely the entire right side channels were gone when listening to the USB drive playing MP3s. It started suddenly and came and went with no correlation to anything. They insisted, on the phone, that it was my cable until I told them for the third time "THERE IS NO CABLE - IT'S A USB DRIVE". Then they suspected speakers until I told them that CD, XM and FM worked perfectly. They also told me that the Surround Sound was "working as normal compared to other Genesis". I intend to tell them that if I lost all radio presets every time I turned the car off and they told me it was working as normal it would be a ridiculous claim.

In any event I have little faith that they will find out why the right channel is coming and going ESPECIALLY since it seems to be back working normally and the Hyundai iPod cable they gave me is the offender now.

I really don't want a new head unit if it introduces these new quirks.

Everybody here with a replacement head unit has issues. If I had it to do over I wouldn't have replaced the head unit. I would rather have my surround sound unchecked than lose the XM channel on center display and lose the name repeat function when using the voice recognition.
