  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I drove a new Tesla S yesterday as part of a special event invitation. I had only been mildly interested in the car's technology and it's future potential as that technology evolves.

Wow! What a surreal experience. They have thought of everything with the S. There's way too much to cover any details here, but think of hearing only modest road noise and a slight whir from the watermelon-sized electric motor. Direct-drive, instant acceleration and aggressive regenerative braking upon lifting your foot off the non-gas pedal.

So I get back into my 2012 R-Spec with my jaw dragging on my chest. Drove off . . . 2 minutes later I'm think . . . I still love my R-Spec.

Back at the ranch, still thinking. So after looking at $115,000 price of entry, I began to think about the used market and found some low mileage 2013s for in the mid-70s and way up. Hmmm.

They are bad-ass cars, and I see at least one every single day either in Mpls, or St. Paul. I still have yet to sit in one, which would be a delight! maybe you should buy a Tesla so I can go for a ride. Then I'll use their public patents and build my own version;)

Bad-ass is right! But if I bought one, I'd never get to drive it because the intoxication of driving it would eliminate my driver's license in no time.
:D

The public patents news makes me want one just on principal. Also, all the investment in battery development and production capacity, all intended to reduce the battery replacement costs from today's $40,000 down to their goal of $5,000.

Great minds think alike? Did the same thing two weeks ago. Drove both S85 and P85. Amazing. Yet the Genny does its thing well.

I am doing a TCO exam for the Tesla as one of my business vehicles. And used to help brand my business. Looking at used seems like a good idea, especially if we find one with the Supercharger capable already installed.

I am not worried about batteries or repairs at this time. They have been doing well, many have over 135k miles already. And no repairs.

Not sure for business if used is as good as new with the tax implications.

Also, Tesla has demo machines not titled, and a bit less than new.

Good luck. Will let you know if I get real close to pulling trigger.

I'm retired, so it's really a stretch to consider anything like this when you want to continue to travel and live the way you always have. However, lurking inside this arthritis-plagued body is a much younger spirit!

Yes, please let us know what you do.

Will keep things updated. Would not trade the Genny I expect. Would keep it in the biz
fleet.

Update. Have not pulled trigger. And likely will not. Their claims of business tax advantages are dubious. Not clear the limits "expensive" cars (and trucks under 6,000 lbs) called "doctors cars" in IRS lingo is waived with electric cars. So, severe limits on deprecation. Also the max amount of lease payment cost is way exceeded in IRS lingo. The "tax credits" do little on a almost 109k car with the options similar to a decked out Genny. Quotes for adding the 80amp charger to the house is about 3.5k on top of the equipment from Tesla. Same for the office.

And, if you go to their forum, it is full of baby face trust fund whiney babies and environmental jack boot thugs. Already been kicked out by daring to question some of their literally mentally insane opinions.

We will see.. For now, looking bleak.

Steve Saleen is working on something extreme for the S. It will be interesting to see if the Saleen version blurs the distinction between extreme-tech/extreme performance and extreme environment-climate change nut case.
