  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

V6 or v8

BY the way.......

here's my daily driver, on a tank full of gas where I "changed my driving style".

For the entire 15 gallon tank, I drove ultra conservatively. When I did this, I was around the 180,000 mile mark on the odometer. I'm at 199,769 as of right now.

In case any of you are wondering, the reason it says "-40_ degrees outside, is because I nailed a raccoon a few months back and it took out my passenger side fog light assembly as well as the temp sending unit mounted right next to the light. It was more like 75 degrees.

The car is a 2005 Mercedes C230 Kompressor, I bought new in 2005. It has a 6spd manual trans and a 1.8l 4cyl engine. I typically get an average of 26 mpg, because I keep the speedo above 80mph during my morning commute (5:30am)
I will hit the 200,000 mile mark this week! Can't wait.

I'm glad the V6 is getting great reviews too; however, I wouldn't buy one. I wanted something extraordinary not great.

As good as the Genesis is, I would not call a Genesis 4.6 extraordinary. I'd reserve that adjective for something like the CTS-V, but that's just me. :)

If the V8 Genesis is a 9 on a scale of 1-10, the V6 is surely an 8.75. In fact, many reviewers seem to prefer the feel of the V6 (C&D, Edmunds, Autoblog).

Point taken; however, I was referring to what my $36,600.00 could buy.

No doubt, the new CTS-V is an "extraordinary" car....But, for that price it should be. Hell, for that price, I would expect a hand-job each time I started the engine. Now that would be EXTRAORDINARY!

Seriously though, it's all relative. In it's segment the the CTS-V is a pretty strong value. But like so many cars above $35k, the CTS-V falls victim to the law of diminishing returns. After a certain price point you have to spend a lot more money to get only slightly better performance.

True.... I guess that's my point. Once you hit that price point, the CTS-V is a beast and gives a lot of bang for your buck, as far as sedans go.
I think if I had one my tag would say 4drvete.

And what you're getting is often an illusion of quality. Look at the trunk of the E550. Keep in mind the sticker of this car is 72k, which means you could get 2 Genesis. But really is it better...

WOW! And people complain(ed) about the Genesis' trunk.

In spite of the many criticisms levied at the Genesis by certain members, there really is no perfect car, and for the money I find very little real reason to fault the Genesis. I actually think most of the critics are those who have not yet owned a Lexus, Cadillac, BMW, etc. I have, and believe me when I say the Genesis represents a tremendous amount of car for the money, with shockingly few compromises.

The last few cars I owned Lexus LS 400(now the beater), BMW 530i, Mercedes CLS500. The last thought in my mind was a Hyundai. I said OK, I'm gonna spend 35k, what's out there. But after driving everything, dissecting all the components, looking at what the car "is" not what it stands for. Nothing was even close. OK, the G37 was on the map, but it was a distant second. Looking back, I can't believe I was even considering the ES350. I would be punching myself right now. (especially with the recalls Toyota has been dealing with).

The thing about the Genesis trunk is that it's a design that requires the cover. Why? Because the speakers/sub are otherwise exposed... and could be whacked by incoming cargo.

If you look at, say, an Audi A4, you'll see it has no cover up top, but it's designed in such a way that you'll never see stuff unless you're looking, and the speakers are recessed in such a way that you can't hit them with a box or something.

E60 or E39 530i?

2002 E39 530i, M sport package. Best car I have ever owned. Hate the look of the E60). The jury is still out on the Genesis cause it's still too new, but it's making a serious run.

I don't think so. The V6 is EPA rated at 27 and the V8 is 25. Even though actual miles may be better, there are better on both cars (I can sometimes get 30 MPG on the hiway with my V6).

Yeah, my opinion is based on what I've read here with people saying they get 29-30 mpg on the hwy with V8s. With my V6 I get 26 mpg, but I'm a leadfoot and I pass aggressively, so who knows for sure. Still, 26 mpg while driving the car in GT manner is great imo.

While it wouldn't surprise me at all if there is a narrow range of speeds at which the V8 "out-mileages" the V6 (ie. based on people's posts on the matter, maybe 70~80 mph?), the V6 certainly out-mileages the V8 for most of the commonly used spectrum of speed (0~50 at the very least).

As do many other cars. I don't see the issue so long as you are cautious.

Not to say I don't like having a cover, I did after all get one installed on Hyundai's dime. I just don't see the terrible travesty of one not being there.

I also had an E39. Mine was a "lowly" CPO 1997 528i, but I loved that car to pieces. It's the only car I ever regret selling, and even given the huge differences in feature content and horsepower I would take it over my 2006 GS430. Seriously. It was simply more enjoyable to drive.

And FWIW I agree 110% on the E60. I still can't stand that car. The new F10 5-Series looks to be a huge step in the right direction though (at least on the inside).

Yes - cars get better an worse mpg based on fuel mapping regardless of vehicle speed - at certain rpms engines tend to run leaner and timing is better optimized. Its hard to nail it down among the most favorable gear ratio, rpm range, and vehicle speed.

I agree with you. Criticism seems to come from people who expect a $70k car at half the price, or those that haven't spent much time in $60k+ cars and know what diminishing returns exist on your money above a certain price point, imo. For $32k, nothing comes close to my Genesis in terms of size, power, drivability and luxury appointments - you may get close on one account, but not two, and certainly not all four.

Yeah it was a great car. Not very fast, but fast enough. Looked great and still does. Handled like a dream, I really loved that car. The E60 was just a total clusterf*&k. It drives great but seriously it looks like they glued it together using pieces intended for other cars. Just on those awful headlights. Here is what someone sent me on the difference between the two front fascias.

That model STILL looks "in style" IMO. I thought they were pretty darn quick, no? The interior/dash is probably the best design they have ever had, which goes for that era 3 series too.
