  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

V6 vs V8

I think the 5.0 RWD gets reasonably good fuel mileage. My comments above were with the 5.0 AWD (not available in USA).

Here are the EPA numbers for 2015 Genesis in the USA:

3.8 RWD
  • 18 MPG - city
  • 22 MPG - combined
  • 29 MPG - highway

3.8 AWD
  • 16 MPG - city
  • 19 MPG - combined
  • 25 MPG - highway

5.0 RWD
  • 15 MPG - city
  • 18 MPG - combined
  • 23 MPG - highway

5.0 AWD (not available in USA, so numbers are extrapolated from above. Actual numbers may vary slightly.)
  • 13 MPG - city
  • 15 MPG - combined
  • 19 MPG - highway

Real Life Data: Last month, I drove home from Fort Myers Fl to Sarnia Ontario Canada and averaged 22MPG with my Canadian 5.0 AWD. I think that's quite respectable for this ride and still say the V8 combined with AWD is an awesome combo for everyday driving situations.

If you stay at 90 km/h (about 55 mph) and engage the cruise control, I was able to get get 25 mpg on the Genesis 5.0 HTRAC. You might be able to get a bit more (say up to 27 mpg) on the 5.0 non-HTRAC.

I did have to turn and decelerate a few times (I was going on backroads in southern Ontario where the speed limit often changes), but overall a decent mpg.

One big weak point of the car is the weight, which I can imagine is an issue for any CUV.

Where can you safely drive at 55? Maybe on a back road, but on the highway it would get you killed. Most highway is 70 to 80 just keeping with traffic.

My first post.

A few months ago I purchased a CPO 2015 5.0 Ultimate. In all honesty, I'm partial to naturally aspired V-8's and that was a major factor in my decision. The dealer had around six CPO Gennys, but only one 5.0. The car was near flawless as it only has four extremely small paint imperfections from debris strikes (likely) on the highway. None were visible unless you towel dry (guilty). Whomever the last owner was, I sincerely appreciate your acceptance of depreciation. That is the only thing about the Genesis that troubles me but being I wasn't the original buyer, so be it.
I did purchase from Hyundai the 10yr/100,000 Bumper-to Bumper extended warranty. The car had 53K on it and sold for a little over $25K. Being we still have a 2013 Sonata 2.0T Limited we bought new that has 81K and zero issues, this Genesis won the battle for my replacement car.

I'm in the Charlotte, NC area, and on the interstate at a reasonable 75mph, this car gets 28mpg. In mixed driving I am seeing 20-21mpg. Sitting in stopped traffic, I amuse myself by watching the gas mileage tick off tenths at an alarming rate. Fuel consumption at idle AIN'T this car's forte. Still, the performance and comfort of this car more than satisfies me. I'm not one to pursue "badging", I look for features and value. This car has it. I'm sure the G70/80/90 models will as well, but with this 2015 5.0 Ultimate I am not the least bit intimidated by any competitor's car that pulls up beside me. To each their own.

You can run with the best of them. Good choice!

A recent journey (180miles/rnd trip) I managed 28.4 (!!) mpg on my RWD V8. I can live with that....;)

I get about 22-24MPG with my 2016 3.8 AWD, so I'm impressed you are getting that with the 5.0!

All the more reason for me to eventually upgrade to the 5.0.... :)

I have a V8 AWD and I took a road trip from Vancouver to Portland last year. I drove there, spent 3 days and drove back on 2 1/2 tanks. That stretch of the I-5 is fairly flat with some curvy bits in northern Washington. I wouldn't worry about V8 fuel economy unless you like to stomp on it all the time. Under normal driving, I get the same MPG as my old 2011 Sonata Turbo.

Good mpg numbers! If I drive my 2015 5.0 like a grandmother, then I can get some decent mpg numbers also. However, it is 420hp V8, so what is the point of trying to drive it like a elderly person just to save some gas.:)

No offense to my fellow older forum members.

If I wanted to save gas and still have decent performance then I would have gotten the V6 model. However, then V8 is very economical for the power it has. But still, who buys a high performance V8 just to worry about gas mileage?

Exactly right! I don't drive like your grandmother, but I don't drive like when I was in my twenties either. Everyone is different and I could not justify the extra $$$ for it. If you have it, enjoy it.

You have learned wisdom my friend, like many other mature drivers I know. Why pay more for an engine that you never take advantage of. I tried the opposite, but I hated not having the quicker car. I tried to tell myself that the Mercedes E350 V6 was fast enough, but I always wanted the E550 V8 engine. I never really liked the E350, but convince myself it was more practical. I regretted that decision not to buy the E550.
Buy what is best for you at the moment and you will be cool with whatever engine you buy.

Guys, its not only the power on demand that the V8 provides (especially at higher speeds) - it's the quiet, smooth, serene atmosphere and effortless acceleration even if you have the weight of another couple in the back on a hot day with the A/C putting a drag on the motor. I believe its a more luxurious vehicle with the naturally aspirated 5.0 while the V6 seems more nimble but it lets you know its working harder to accomplish the same tasks. I've had both.

Being a boater, the idea of quibbling over 22MPG vs 28MPG is funny. The average twin engine cruiser gets .5MPG to 1MPG if your lucky. Mine is about .75MPG @ 30MPH, so driving my 5.0 Genesis is kind of a treat when it comes to fuel consumption. I'll go through more gas in a few summer months on the boat than both my cars all year long! It's all relative.

The 5.0 and 3.8 offer different flavours of the same vehicle. Pick the flavour that suits your tastes and enjoy!

Hey lobsenza, how are you doing? On topic, my beef with the v6 was not power, but vibration and motor mount issues. And from what I have seen on the G80 forum, the problem still persists with the v6.
I have an LS460 now. Its city mileage is equal to my 2015 Genesis v6 and highway is far better than my v6 Sonata (an amazingly thirsty car) or the Genesis.

I just checked the cash purchase price here in Canada for the base LS460 vs Genesis 5.0 Ultimate. Let's invest the $30,000+ difference which can sure buy a lot of gas. Actually, you could just use the $30 Large + investment income to drive the Genesis for free and have money left over to buy your next car in 5yrs...

@jimmy buoy I bought it used.

Smart. Still, comparing used to used there would probably be a significant price difference - yes? Unless you're insinuating that Lexus will incur more depreciation than a Genesis...

I lucked into a very good buy (2012 with low mileage in immaculate condition) just as the lease was ending on my Genesis. I paid about the same or less than a used 2015 v6 Genesis with the same mileage. A new LS is a poor purchase, just as any new luxury car. They go for over a 100k and do not have a v8 anymore. :(

Depreciation on any cars of this calibre is steep. My son is the other side of Canada and sent me an ad for another car that's a carbon copy of mine but with less mileage for under $30,000. Even though I bought mine as an end of year deal with over $15G off the list it was a bit depressing to see what I could have purchased the same vehicle for today. That's the car game!
