  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Very Disappointed with the Genesis

homeofstone,

Very well stated. I have yet to make the leap from BWM to the Genesis but will make the decision when I drive the new R Spec. I am guilty of succumbing to brand cache in the past given that I owned Corvette, MB, and BMW but really feel that the Genesis will meet all my expectations. Peer pressure also may be a factor as you stated. We shall see.

This is the first car in quite a while I've purchased that didn't have navigation. The reason I went without nav this time around is that it wasn't (IMHO) a good implementation. The sound system sounds great, but I use an iPod/iPhone, and the interface is really quite poor. I love my Genesis. Love it. They did a terrible job with iPod integration, and a not-so-good job with the navigation. My sister's 2005 Toyota Sienna MINIVAN has a better navigation interface than the Genesis.

I bought a pretty base model, 2 yr old V6 Genny because I knew that, even if I bought a brand new top of the line 2011, I'd just replace it when the refresh happens.

I'm amazed at what Hyundai accomplished on their first attempt in this segment. That sets the bar high for what they do next.

I'm quite surprised by the fact that so many owners dislike the Nav system.
I've extensively used Garmin, Tomtom, Magellan, and many OEM systems including Honda/Acura, GM, and thought the Harman system(DIS system in ours) is pretty decent in terms of guidance and UI.

My profession is related to navigation systems, so I'm meticulous about the performance and I think it's above average among OEMs.

In some respects, the Genesis nav is better than the one in my '03 Infiniti. For example, I like the way it presents information on a split screen. But entering the street before the city doesn't make sense most of the time. Oddly, I hated that my Infiniti's nav always asked for the state and city before the address - I thought it should default to the last location.

On the contrary as I stated on one of my prior posts the one thing about my new Genesis that leaves a lot to be desired is the operation of the nav system especially with respect to my 07 G35X. After seeing the one in the Genesis I realize how good the Gs is. It seems to interface so intuitively that I took it for granted. The G asks for an address in the proper manner first the address then the city then the state and it defaults to the last used state. The voice recognition is great with a large vocabulary and very few errors. Of course to be perfectly honest there was an initial voice learning procedure which the Genesis didn’t require and it and the nav system have performed well.

As I said, I was comparing the Genesis nav with the '03 Infiniti nav. I have no experience with the nav systems in newer Infinitis. As I also said, entering the street before the city makes little sense. Once you're underway, though, I think that the Genesis nav display is quite good.

As the O.P., I am glad to see this thread get so much attention.
Well I have had my car for four weeks as of today and already put 2,000 miles on it and on my 5th tank of fuel. My attitude towards the car is now what I set it out to be and that is to focus on what I like and not what I don’t like. What I like is the style and the way it drives. I am impressed with the fuel efficiency for a car with a powerful V8. I’m getting right at 26 mpg on the highway and about 22 mpg for my typical 50/50 driving. I still have to say though that other than the sound quality of the Lexicon system, I am still baffled by how poorly the “center stack” operates. A couple of additional shockers raised their head over the past four weeks. For one, there is no way to truly turn “off” the climate system. So wherever the last setting was it will continue to blow (due to open vents I assume) at the last temperature setting. While that is annoying, it pales in comparison to the windshield wipers. I finally got to use the wipers in the rain and was shocked to discover no intermittent setting! What?! Really?! OMG Hyundai, get with the 70’s. It seems they replaced it with the automatic setting, which is of no use to me because its far too sensitive. So I am left with the 1950’s version of wiper use, which is to manually reach up and do a single swipe every single time I want them to wipe. Urg!! There are also many other bothersome things but I suspect future models will get better. Hyundai is still new to this market and this level of feedback.

On another note, I successfully installed an overhead DVD entertainment system in this car and I’m pretty pleased with it. I’ll start a new thread soon in the appropriate place complete with photos and step by step for anyone who may want to do the same.

Thanks

I agree that the auto wipers are a little too sensitive at times, even when in their least sensitive state. Since the control exists to be able to change the sensitivity, the "sweet spot" should have been more toward the middle of the range. I do realize that the "sweet spot" is subjective, but I honestly doubt that anyone would want to run the automated wipers set to the their most sensitive, and would be shocked if anyone's position was that there is any significant practical difference between the mid and full sensitivity settings.

I'd be interested to see your work on the overhead DVD display, by the way. Particularly the details of setup if you have it playing from the DVD changer but functioning while in drive. (No, not so I can watch the video myself while driving -- I think we've already had enough threads on that topic.)
