  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Very Load Knock and Smoke on cold Start

Interesting, I am afraid I will end up with the same issue. I have a great recording of the noise now. Took it into the dealer and they listened to it. They said it is becomming more common in the Technical reports they use. The final solution so far is they have said there is a new Oil filter out with a valve to prevent bleed down of the oil line. We did a oil change and will see. They also sayt it is neccessary to chang the oil every 3750 miles; the Manual says 7500. They keep it for about 1/2 week and said they couldn't duplicate the issue. I will see what happens, if the problem persist I think they are going to have to do something for me. I have had it in the shop twice now.

Happend to my car once, so I had an engine oil analysis done

"SCOTT: Universal averages show typical wear levels for Hyundai's 4.6L V-8 engine after about 3,500 miles
on the oil. You ran your oil just 2,500 miles and everything looks very good in this report. We liked your note
stating that drive your car "pretty darn hard". Hard use can cause a bit of extra wear that is mainly found at
iron (from steel parts). Iron wear also increases with oil use, so your iron was a touch above average for
2,500 miles of use, but not enough to suggest you should stop having fun in your Genesis! Your engine is
looking very good at 19,500 miles. Cool car!"

All together since 25-Nov-2011. Yes I have had a loaner. Go back to my previous posts for the history on this deal. The Hyundai regional service guy is simply a moron.

The dealer is a friend...so after this is done and the dust settles a bit...I am going to request a replacement Genesis....not just an engine. We shall see...stay tuned.

The story continues.....unfortunately. When all of the previous work was done, I finally got the car back before Christmas. Seemed OK. Went away for 2 weeksin Jan and when I returned started to notice a burned oil smell. Checked under the hood did not see anything obvious. Smell continued, finally saw that there was a major oil leak from the left side where the work was done. Oil level down 2.5 qts. Took to dealer who re-gasketed the previous work done. Today 2-Mar-2012 is one day after received back and it sounds like an old Singer sewing machine. Took back to dealer and advised him that I AM DONE. As far as I am concerned they own the car and I want it replaced....do not want a new engine...replace the car. PERIOD. My opinion is that the TAU engine has a serious design flaw in the way the cam timing chain tensoner system is designed and how it maintains the proper amount of tension. I am very qualified to make this statement. I am a 32 yr member of SAE and hold BSME and MSME degrees. I have developed engines for 30+ years. End of story.

Update No 2

The car has been in the shop for 24 days now. They have replaced the oil sensor, cam sensor, camshaft(s) and now they are replacing lifters.

There is no end in sight. While I loved the car, I have now lost all confidence in Hyundai and my car.

In all of my prior years of owning BMW, Audi, Mercedes and Lexus, my car had never been in the shop even overnight before.

Your saga sounds like a duplicate of my experience. The dealer techs are at Hyundai' s mercy. Hyundai seems to be clueless on my car, and they do not communicate ell at all with the dealer techs and refuse to talk to me. I could help them if there was someone techically competent at Hyundai to rationally discuss this and try to discover the root cause. So far Hyundai refused to talk and it seems like they are just throwing darts blindly. As I have mentioned, I have zero confidence in the car and it needs to be replaced by Hyundai.

I know this is an old thread but thought it worth my story. Same issue, 4.6L V8 hates to start and be turned off after a few seconds. Upon restarting, even hours later, I get the loud knocking, smell of metal coming out the tailpipe, and occasionally the check engine light which shows up as a misfire. For years dealer could not duplicate. At 97k miles, I took it in and wanted it known that if that engine blows up after the warranty due to this issue, I had brought it in under warranty several times and Hyundai was going to buy me a new engine. The dealer was finally able to duplicate the issue, documented it, reached out to corporate and now getting me a brand new engine. Approval came last week. Parts list alone is over $7,000; thank the Lord for the 100k mile warranty. It's a weird defect, no diagnosis of the cause, just that Hyundai is buying me a new engine.
