I had a specific reason for wanting to purchase a Genesis in the past few months that is no longer relevant. I was leaning toward a 3.8L w/Tech package ... the V6 because I am located in the northeast and I figured that the 52/48 weight distribution of the V6 with real snow tires would help in winter. I realize that the V8 will get a bigger engine in 2012, but what are your thoughts about waiting to see what the 2012 refresh is if I likely will opt for the V6? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

If you are going to buy the 3.8 you are robbing yourself of the pleasure of owning one of the best cars on the road today. Just do it and join in the fun and pleasure of having a Genesis.

The next generation of Hyundai's Equus, Genesis Sedan and Genesis Coupe will get all-wheel drive according to CEO John Krafcik, revealed at today's Equus drive event. The move is no doubt intended to put Hyundai on equal footing with its luxury rivals like BMW, Cadillac, and Audi, all of which offer all-wheel drive versions of their most popular sedans and coupes.

I don't think that the Genesis is going to get a complete redesign any time soon. The Genesis and the Equus share similar architecture and why would they introduce the Equus now only to redesign it next year. I think that there will be a mid cycle refresh on the Genesis maybe as soon as 2102 but AWD looks like it will need a complete redesign to be incorporated in the new car. Hyundai will use the 5.0 ltr, 8 spd upgrade with maybe new bumper covers front and rear and little trim items to carry them over to the next redesign. The new car will have to be substantially lighter in order to maintain the level of performance that we have come to expect and not incur the dreaded "Gas Guzzler Tax". I think that any redesign has to look towards the 35mpg CAFE due in 2016 and I see Hyundai stretching this platform just a little longer than 2012.

That's just nuts! The 3.8 is in no way a "lesser" car than the 4.6- it just has different stuff. I drove both, several times, and I liked the 3.8 better. We both have great cars, for Pete's sake. The 3.8 is no less a great car than the 4.6.

:D

I think what Rob meant was waiting rather than buying and enjoying the car now.

DG, what do you like about the 3.8 better? I'm still deciding.

I am a lead foot and the 3.8 has plenty of get up and go and spins the wheels if needed. Heck, it is only .5-.7 seconds slower than the beefier V8 0-60.
My reason reasons for not going with the V8 was purely economical- $2K in my pocket and extra 2-3 miles on every gallon of gas. No regrets.

Hyundai has already stated that they will upgrade their V6 Lambda engines with direct injection. It's up in the air whether or not they will be in the refreshed Genesis for 2012. This would seem like a natural evolution of the model, but really it's pure speculation...

Not me. I already own a 2011 4.6 Genesis and I think it is such a perfect car I am going to buy another in a few months. In my opinion the car will either go downhill or increase in price.

I saw this happen with Lexus.

The main point that struck me is that the 3.8 feels nimbler and lighter on its feet. I don't know if it's the 400 pound weight difference or what, but it just feels better to me. The 3.8 has more than enough power for me, and the mileage is a little better also. The 4.6 comes, at a higher price, with a lot of standard stuff that I don't care about, so for me the 3.8 with Premium and touchscreen nav with full price OTD (taxes/tags) of $34,500, was the perfect deal. There are so many reports of trouble with Tech package features that I am frankly glad I elected not to get it. In any case, I have owned more cars than I can remember since 1961, including BMW, Mercedes, Volvo and lots of other forgettable cars, and the Genesis is by far the best car I've ever owned.:D

The V8 is only 264 lbs heavier than the V6, the reason that the V6 may feel more nimble is the lighter front weight but mostly the V8 has an electric power steering and that has a more numb feeling than the V6 hydraulic system with an engine driven pump. The V6 vs V8 difference really comes down to preference. Just like MB or BMW and particularly Lexus in the GS, there is nothing less about owning a 6cyl over a V8. In my case I just like V8 engines and I don't drive enough that the difference in fuel economy is all that important. If I had to commute 75 or 100 miles a day to work I might think differently and go for the V6. Honestly, at 75mph with the cruise set and the stereo blasting, I defy anyone to tell the difference.

I drive a Genesis June build 2009 4.6L with tech, and while it was in the shop having the map updated last week, the dealership provided a loaner V-6 standard, non-premium, no frills version and I noticed lot of difference in how they handled, and the comfort differences between the two. I was glad to get my car back, but I think the main difference was in the standard package vs. premium. The seats weren't as comfortable on the long distances I drive (I don't think they were as well padded), the interior wasn't decked out as nice, and the steering wasn't what I was used to. It did have ample power.
If I were going to get the 3.8L, I certainly would get the premium package.

What I meant was simple - he said he wanted a v6 but was waiting. I told him to go buy it. I'm not here to slam the V6 crowd. I bought the 4.6 because I preferred it. You got the 3.8 because you preferred it. We both love our Genesis's. Nuff said.

I have read from professional reviews that the 2010 Genesis 0-60 times for both engines are 5.9 seconds and 6.3 seconds respectively while the 2011 times are 5.7 seconds and 6.2 seconds. Hyundai seems to have improved both engines.
From what I see the difference from the V-8 to the V-6 is from way too fast to really fast. This makes me want to drive the V-6 before I get either one and determine for myself which car offers the biggest bang for the buck.

Sorry - I must have misread your post: I took it to mean that if the OP bought the 3.8 he would be depriving himself of the pleasure of owning a great car. .:o

I know the V8 engine will be improved, but should we be expecting any significant changes or improvements in the 2012 V6 version compared to the the 2011 model? Any conjecture?

For 0-60 yeah. But in the highway pulls your 3.8 will get raped by a V8 version.

No regrets.
Let me give you a scenario. Say you are on the ramp getting on the interstate and you are in front of a Mercedes C55 AMG. You floor the gas to attempt for a max acceleration and the Mercedes will fly by you like you are standing. Do you like that?? I certainly don't... You gonna wonder why is my car not running like Mercedes Benz or BMW? Me iz clueless! The V6 version has close ratio low gears and tall at high gears which makes the car run even slower at high speeds. If you were on the 2010 model V8 version you can almost maintain the lead and the C55 AMG won't be able to pass you. He would have very hard time overtaking it. What's more? the Mercedes driver will have better impression about Hyundai. Trust me, there will be times you wish you had the V8 version and wouldn't get raped like that by BMW's and Mercedes.:welcome: The V8 version not only has more power but also has better gearing up top. It's designed for high speed acceleration.

I think the only change to the V8 is the change to the 5.0L engine and possibly the 8 speed tranny. Think the 3.8 will be staying the same for the time being.

Well I drove both the 3.8 Genesis and the AWD Veracruz today and both are very impressive and nice cars compared to my Ford Taurus and Explorer. However, as stated in this thread they are NOT the 4.6 Genesis. It all comes down to preference and maturity. I have a kid that works for me who owns a Dodge Challenger with a 5.7 HEMI which packs 357 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 390 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm. I want to see if he will race me with my new Hyundai. LOL

Sorry Cheez- my 3.8 hasn't had any problem accelerating from highway on ramps to 80 in a flash. Not sure I want to chase a Mercedes,Corvette ZR1 to double digit numbers. Again, the V6 makes it to 100+ just fine. Plus it is more nimble. 28K on the odometer and not once did I say I could've had a V8! Hey Cheez Wiz- your tag says you don't even have a Genesis!
