  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Finally got my intake valves walnut blasted. Did it after 100200 km and the carbon build up was pretty significant.

What grade of fuel do you use?

You had a lot of carbon for only about 60k miles, got me concerned about my valves.

Yeah that has me a little concerned as well. I've got a long way to 60k but not looking forward to pecan blasting...

I will remove my intake manifold and use CRC carbon cleaner that dissolves carbon to clean my valves/intake chambers with a brush added to scrub the stubborn areas. However, walnut shell basting does work well if I was going to pay someone to clean my valves.

The valves seem pretty easy to get to on our engines, however I may have to manually turn the engine to keep the valves closed while cleaning to prevent carbon chunks entering the combustion chamber. I am curious if the engine has to turned during walnut blasting.

However, after looking at this video I may just a use brake cleaner to breakup the carbon since it did better than CRC on cold engine parts.

I use the mid grade fuel . 89 octane

Thanks. I do not know if the grade of fuel correlates to the amount of carbon build-up, but it helps me compare later on when I inspect my engine. I was going to wait until 100k miles, but I may just clean my valves at about 80k miles when I change my spark plugs since it easier to turn an engine when the plugs are removed.

One more question, Are you doing city driving or highway? Or both? I apologize for the questions! Just trying to get a feel for things. Thanks.🙂
I do both about 60% city 40% highway
