well, i took another test ride on the genesis last week.
i had posted here before asking for advice on this car and got some answers thank you.

as much as i like the genesis, on the last ride i took out a v8 and found :

A SLIGHT VIBRATION coming thru the steering wheel .more akin to the vibes felt on a 4 cylinder japanese bike . this is lousy given what they are trying to say with this car .

AND THE RIDE , even though it is great ,i did have a bad feeling about it lasting . i think that this is the type of car that deteriorates with time .
i found the ride, firm ,to my liking . but i have a feeling that the quality of materials under the hood may not be there. only a feeling.
i may be wrong .

POOR QUALITY MATERIALS and i do know that some of you may question this one but on very close inspection i found the i drive knob to be sort of flimsy and the menu it gives you acces to rather unrefined as compared to the infinity, bmw, mb,and others such as audi.
again, this is no big deal given the price difference here and i could live with it .
some of the surfaces are rather flimsy and badly finished. again not a major issue if you consider the price point

THE PASSENGER SIDE SEAT does not have full articulation. it can only move back and forth but not ---up and down ---. big negative for anyone riding/seating here. this is a major issue for my wife and anyone riding with me.

THE DISCOUNT given to me of $ 5,000 on a 2009 is not sufficient for a car that has been stalling at northeast dealerships where the 2010 is not yet available waiting for dealers to unload the 09's.

had the discount been deeper ,say $ 8,000 then yes, maybe.

and the discount on the 2010 ,also too poor at $3,000.

and the BLOGS...........the majority here are very impressed with their cars . but there are some complaints ...vibrations, computer problems , one of the cars i test rode had a defective rear view camera.

overall , i found that 8 out of 10 loved their genesis . and i may be wrong ,who knows ?????????

therefore ,i am passing on this one ,for now anyhow .who knows , i may come back to it .

and what will i get .??? well ,another reason for passing is the fact that the new bmw 7 series is coming out this spring with the 6 cylinder inline twin turbo engine.
this may be a big mistake given the stealership practices near where i live and the high prices for parts,etc.......but ,you only live once.
so ,this is one to consider.

i also saw the new porsche Panamera yesterday and though too bulky for my taste ,the interior is perfect like the infinity m and the bmw. i turned down a etst ride on it becasue i found the rear 3/4 of the car too bulky looking and
again, who knows .........

and next is the new 2011 infinity . i do have a fx35 and it is great , a sports car in a suv package .very firm ride ,great handling .

we will see

and please guys ,i am not putting any car down, i may still come back to genesis next year if they improve the pass. seat and other. but not for now

Good luck with whatever new car you end up with.

Can't say I agree with many of your comments, but we all have our opinions. :)

To each his own....... To me, if you're considering a 7 Series BMW, then I question why you were ever considering a Genesis in the first place. I'm pretty sure you could buy two or three Gens for the price of one new 7 Series. Or Porsche Panamera for that matter.

I think it's safe to say that the genesis if fair competition with the 5 Series (non "M"), Lexus GS, Infinity M or G, Mercedes C and E Class and a few others. You're in a whole other league with the cars you mentioned...

I have not had the issues you've talked about and this is the nicest car I have owned for under $45k.... I have owned BMW, Infinity Q45, Mercedes, VW, Toyota, Honda, Jeep, MG, Ford, and Pontiac. Not all were higher end cars (obviously), but some were and none of them compare to this car..

Here's where I'm not impressed:

Service.....At least at the dealership I go to. It's very dated, no free internet or wi-fi, service advisers are located in the shop and not in a separate office or area, and there's no where comfortable to sit and wait for things like quick fixes and oil changes.... Infinity, Mercedes, and VW gave me my best "waiting" experiences. Infinity had the best over all experience in service and Mercedes was good except for how long it took to actually get my car and leave once I was told it was ready...

Anyways, I would have a hard time referring the genesis to someone that likes the incredible service experience. Unless you have a dealership that has taken the initiative to step up their game, they won't be happy.

Heck, even the Honda dealership my wife takes her van to has free internet, child play area, couches, etc... If I didn't have free oil changes for life at my dealership, I would consider going to the one a littler further away.

Good luck to you, with whatever car you end up getting.

Indeed, this is what I am about to say..... If one is aiming for a BM 7 or a Panamera. Then, genesis is not the car for you.
To be fair, I will compare Genesis to his fellow competitors in the 35-45K range.

And again, it is your car, and you must like it in the first.. or you will not satisfy even it is free. ;-)

Muisui,

Have you had any issues with your automatic side doors on your Sienna Van?

We heard a couple horror stories on how expensive it was to fix them when they failed, out of warranty, so we ended up getting my wife a 2010 Honda Odyssey. So far we love the Honda, but the wife sure liked the Sienna.

Our street has become infested with Honda Odysseys over the past year. within 10 houses, there are 6 Honda vans...

The wife traded her 2006 Toyota 4Runner Limited V8 for the van a month after our baby girl was born. We also have a 2yr old (He's almost 3) and once we added the new car seat to the back of the 4Runner it made it too tight and too small. Personally, I love our new van. 2010 brought a rear auto gate and these auto doors are awesome when you're carrying out two kids and all the stuff that goes along with them. Not to mention, our son gets to watch movies when we take trips longer than 15 or 20 minutes.

I still have the set-up in the back of my Genesis for when the kids want to haul ass.

Muisui,

I have no issues whatsoever with my Sienna until my van gets rear ended by a 17 years old and after that, the van has its own mind. The sliding door and the power tail gate are not responding well and sometime it will close automatically when it is in OPEN position.

And we actually sold the van like almost 3 months ago. and i should update my sig. But I have a friend has exact the same car like we do for over 3 years so far, works well and never hear a single compliant.

One of the guys I have been friends with for over 20 years, has worked for Toyota for the past 13 years (in a dealership's parts department).. When I asked him about it a month ago, he said, "the doors fail a lot more than they should and cost several thousand dollars to fix if out of warranty"...
We actually had more little annoying issues with my wife's 4Runner than we did with her last 4Runner. (both were limited V8's. The first was an 04 and when it was totaled, she bought the same model in an 05) When we traded her 05 in on the Honda Odyssey, it only had 38k miles on it. dealership gave us $19k for it. We bought it with 5k miles on it for $27,500.00..... Wife owned it for 3 years and only owed $9k. Since we financed everything when we bought the 4Runner (tax, tag, title, truck came to $29k) we didn't expect to have that much equity in it...Got to give Toyota credit for holding its value!

So, did you end up getting a Gen to replace the van?

All I will say is watch the Tranny in that Oddy. My wife's failed, friends with the Oddy had the same problem. The 5 speed seems to fail in odd ways....

If you ever feel the tranny "slip" as it switches to overdrive (to 4th or 5th) get it to the dealer quick....

Muisui,
And to get off topic once again....After reading your list of retired cars, I wanted to share the one car I wish I would have never sold...
My 2002 GTI 337. I put in:
APR Stage III turbo upgrade
APR FMIC
Quaife limited slip
Coil overs
Diesel Geek short shift kit
3" turbo-back exhaust
and a list of other goodies. I drove it every day and kept it very streetable.
I also participated in a lot of local Audi Club events that left every one except the stage III S4 owners scratching their heads. My buddy Ross owned the twin turbo V8 S6 and the only time he could beat me was from a stop...Other than that, I pulled a car or so on him up to 150mph....

I actually seriously considered an S4 (not the new 6cyl supercharged one) while thinking about the Genesis... It's not the first time either... I drove an 05 S4 Avant back at the end of 2005 and almost left the dealership with it. What an awesome car!

Here's the one I let get away:

Looks like you have great taste in cars!

WALLYMN,

Because we made out so well with our trade, we purchased the extended warranty.... Let's keep our fingers crossed that if it fails, it does so under warranty.

So far, the 5 on our street are running good, my sister-in-law's is still running good (they had a Sienna that had oil sludge issues and got a new engine twice in 5 years).... Not discounting your experience as even the best of brands have issues with certain line ups.

Scott

ffb13, sounds like the Equus will be more appropriate than the Genesis for your tastes and budget. The level of refinement is higher in the upcoming flagship model that will try to go head-to-head with LS/S-Class/7-Series, although the pricetag will go up considerably. My guess is that it's going to jump $10-20K.

Not yet... I am a married man. A married man required wife's approval before he can do anything... but hopefully after Feb/March.... :D

The GTI indeed a very good car. and you have good taste and the knowledge to tune it right. I know for a fact that many people tune their cars only for HP. It is like a gun only have fire power but not easy to aim and shoot. I didn't tune my car here in the US (And most of those Jap cars I had are in Hong Kong anyway), tuning makes you addicted to it... ;-)

And I almost cried when I traded my S4 for the Sienna, think about the difference of these 2 cars... but when you get a pre-mature baby gal like I do 2.5 years ago, anything becomes not so important compare with her. But I do wish she born as big as she is today, so I can enjoy my S4 Avant and still have her in the back seat sat comfortably. But I am not regret. So far, we only have the 335xi coupe and still trying to get the Genesis maybe this spring. ;)

I went to see Equus in my local dealer. 51K is the price if my memory serves me correctly. ;-) And it is a lot more car than Genesis and can comfortably meet/beat any other make's flagship. (if brand preference is not an issue)

I have a "four cylinder japanese bike" and at 200 mph there is no vibration. You obviously don't know what you're talking--

I paid as much attention to handling and braking as I did to accelerating....
Seeing that I held an SCCA Club Racing license for years and also instructed for both Trackspeed International and Chin Motorsports, I understood how equally important cornering and braking were to horse power....

here's me driving my old ITA Mazda Protege at Daytona..back in 2001:

Good post Scott. I'm glad to see interesting things on this site besides what tire pressure one keeps in their spare. Are you going to take your Genesis to Daytona and run it?

"An issue with the passenger seat not going up/down"????? I have never owned a car were the passenger seat went up/down. I never had a passenger that complained about it. I have owned cars for 50 years.

What 4 cyclinder japanese bike goes 200MPH? The old Suzuki hayabusa used to get close before they governed them.
