What is your biggest complaint about the Hyundai Genesis?

Re: Don't buy

Terrible Car / Forgettable experience

After almost decades of owning premium / luxury cars, I made the regrettable decision to buy a Hyundai. All my friends and family were skeptical. I have spent the past several months working with dealers and HMA Consumer Affairs to address the problems. Every time they tell me they DO NOT see the problems. Is anyone else having these problems? The whole experience has been extremely disappointing.

1. Rattling / grinding sound: This is mostly when driving at lower gears (0-40mph). The rattling becomes faint when the car is in cruise mode.

2. Jerky transmission: the car jumps a gear very often while accelerating and decelerating

3. Squeaking / cranking sound from the rear seat when driving over a rough / bumpy road. Sometimes the noise is so loud, I am worried something may fall off.

4. Loud rumbling noise when starting the car first thing in the morning

5. Vibrations while driving, this got progressively worse and I noticed the passenger seat shaking back and forth.

6. The horizontal defog elements on rear wind screen give a hazy view at night

7. Tires have worn off at less than 30k miles.

8. The cabin lights flicker when switched ON or the door is opened.

9. Cruise control function has failed.

I have experienced none of these (but I don't have 30K miles on the car yet, so I don't know about the tires). I am not disappointed in any way. Maybe you got a lemon?

I have experienced some of these issues as well.....just starting to hear a noise when the car is at a light and my foot is on the brake. A low frequency rattle but is fine if I put it in neutral. Will have i looked at at the next service.

Transmission is not "jerky" in normal driving but it does hold a gear too long on a grade for instance and then will sometimes pop into the next gear a bit hard. This is especially noticeable if you floor it and then let up on the gas or when in manual transmission mode.

My cabin lights flicker as well but I find this mostly happens in daylight or towards dusk. Seems the sensor may be placed poorly or is a bit sensitive.

They keep telling me NTF on the tranny but thats because the computer is not logging error codes when it acts the way I described. Gonna have them drive it next time.

None of these things are enough to really bother me or stop me from recommending the Genesis but I can see this posters frustrations from multiple issues.

Either I have a lemon or Hyundai can't build a car. I posted earlier about the transmission and the cruise control problems I have. When I picked-up my car the dealer said that the cruise control was within limits, +/- 3MPH and they couldn't find anything wrong with the transmission. I might be lucky, however, as the transmission 'shuddered' when shifting the other night so this one might wind up in the street!

My wife loves this car and now I hate it. After leaving the dealer with the car I went across the street and looked at an 09 M-35. If I can convince the little lady that the car isn't reliable I might have a chance to get an M-35. The biggest thing I have going is that we have an 02 I-35 and it has never been back to the dealer and has never needed any repair work. Oh, did I mention that the cruise control stays dead-on and the transmission is smooth as silk.

We absolutely love the car except for one major thing: The Ride. Wife traded in a V-6 2000 VW passat wagon for a V-6 Genesis sedan and compared to the Passat, which had BOTH a firm and controlled suspension, the Genesis is harsh and jittery. The Germans know suspensions, the Koreans do not...yet

Unfortunately, I think we test drove a sedan with the smaller wheels, but purchased one with the larger wheels, because she swears the test drive wasn't as harsh and I agree. Having never had wheels larger than 16", I never thought about the ride changing so much, and the salesman never gave us a heads up. While the ride issues are more than tires - they are shock and spring related as well - I wonder how much better the smaller rims ride?

I drive a 99 Grand Caravan AWD with sport suspension and while it doesn't handle like the Genesis, it has a much more comfortable ride. But, I also drove the Passat, and loved the tight handling Passat suspension, so we are not coming from driving a "Buick", and were not expecting a cushy ride, just a well tuned suspension, and the Genesis definitely falls short.

I hope Hyundai or someone comes up with an aftermarket suspension fix, or we will probably not get another Hyundai.

My minor peeve has to do with the tail light trim that wraps into the trunk lip area. It does not allow for clear draining of water and debris because the plastic is higher than the sheet metal, so crud collects in this area and the water backs up. This seems like design 101 type stuff to me. Hey! Let's create a dam! Stupid!

+1 (still laughing)

Re: If you had to choose

The buttons on the steering wheel, just feel very cheap. They don't even seem to be on par with the ones on the dashboard. Now I haven't had a problem with them or anything but they just don't seem as high end.

And the back seats not folding down/the pass through being so damn small seems kind of silly. A HUGE trunk with a 8inx8in pass through and no folding seats. Just seems like if they had a list of things to do they didn't get to address that area.

67L30WGN most (I think most of us...how would you measure that?) are waiting for a solution to "the ride". My hope is that an aftermarket company (Monroe can you hear us?) will make a better shock/spring set up. Read the suspension section and you will see your exact story repeated often. I was so frustrated that I landed in a Lexus dealership test driving the es350...no harshness there. I just couldn't stomach the 6 k loss...so lets just hope someone finds it profitable enough to help us.

Just spent 2 days in NYC, didn't miss a pot hole and my teeth are all loose!!!
Even my mother's Crown Vic comes with a 'sport suspension' button
This car needs help

With due respect guys, as someone else has said in another thread somewhere (I think), if you wanted a boat that seems to float a few inches off the pavement you should have bought one -- don't expect to take curves like you're on rails, however. After having driven one of the best handling sports cars on the road for seven years, I believe Hyundai has struck a terrific balance between handling and road-feel with this car.

OK chilly mac I'll assume your respect is sincere but who is it that wanted a "boat that floats over the road"? If your point is that sporty handling and comfort are mutually exclusive OK but the most you could accuse the handling nay sayers of is being naive. You MAY have a valid point but I'm inclined to believe that one can have a taut/firm ride without a harsh "buckboard" effect. I think the "taut but not harsh" property is exactly what the latest consumer reports found appealing in the Infinity. My gut feeling is that some aftermarket company will provide a more appealing shock/spring set up...as for me when I'm asked about the car I respond that its great except its sprung just too tight and until there is an option I can't recommend it

The car gave me motion sickness in a sense. By that I mean I didn't find the ride particularly harsh but the car didn't recover with grace and apblomb. It continued to jitter for lack of a better word rut after rut. It was a strange feeling. There are cars that are taut but recover from potholes and bumbs in a comfortable way.

Fully Adjustable Coilover Kits provide the ultimate in suspension technology for your street or track car. 16 levels of dampening adjustment allow you to fine tune the ride to your handling and comfort needs. The dampening adjusts compression and rebound simultaneously for ease of adjustment.

After many months of R&D, HSD Coilovers for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe are finally ready. Sedan versions will follow soon. HSD is the most popular coilover brand for the Genesis

Yeah well I need someone who has complained specifically about the ride to install this very expensive setup to give us the word about the ARKracing coilovers...I've already blown 800 bucks on Michelan tires (the numer 1 rated tire by consumer reports) without a significant change. There is one forum participant (Justryl I think) who has installed them but his report just doesn't answer the question for me.

Krass you're a troll. I don't believe a word you say with six posts. Get off the site you idiot.

Thanks "Old Spice". Hmm universal fit...I'll wait for something specifically for our Genesis to be developed. Part of what persuaded me to buy was the engineering put into this vehicle. I had the feeling that some very talented people gave every part a critical eye with a goal of making an exceptional car for the price...now is not the time to shoe horn univeral fits into it. By the way the $1400 coilovers from ARK might just be the ticket and I for one would spring :) for them if someone who complained specifically about the ride gave the ARK coil/struts the OK.

I totally agree. I love the handling of my Genny and I really love it on long trips. On long trips with our floating boat Lincoln Town Car, I consistently arrived fatigued to the point of being wobbly ... not kidding! The LTC has its place (shorter, low-speed trips in cities with horrible roads). Long trips on many Interstates and decent state roads with the Genny are so much less tiring. The Genny tracks like an arrow and sticks to the road like glue.

I live in Naples Florida and our roads are great compared to Pittsburgh, from where we hail. If I had to move back to Pittsburgh (shudder) I might have to ditch the Genny. The Genny is harsh on crappy roads. I did drive it to Pittsburgh and was glad to leave.

Yeah, let me acknowledge that -- I live in NC where the roads are pretty nice for the most part. Grew up here and didn't realize how nice we have it until visiting up north (I think it may actually have been in PA) and the pavement of every other back road was garbage. So, it might be that wherever there are much worse roads I wouldn't see the car as such a good fit. For here, though, I don't think it can be beat for less than twice the cost!

The middle head rest in the back seat has become increasingly annoying due to the
obstruction in the rear view mirror, I folded it down today. WOW

Have a V-6 2009 sedan WORST car I've ever had in snow......
