  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

What is your biggest complaint about the Hyundai Genesis?

Have a V-6 2009 sedan WORST car I've ever had in snow......

its the tires... get a set of winter tires and it is a very good car in the snow.

+1
It's not the car. It's the tires (and possible the driver). Good snow tires make all the difference. I have set of Bridgestone Blizzak LM60's and the car performs very well - no slips, spins, or skids (unless you're driving too aggressively).

Re: Don't buy

I would be interested in what vehicles you owned in the past. Years, Makes and Models.

The only car that I have owned that was on par with my 2011 4.6 Genesis was my 1999 Lexus GS300.

German cars - Forget it!

Coincidentally, I had a '98 GS400, and that is the car I compare to my current 2010 Genesis V6.

Funny you went from the V6 to the V8, and I went the other way.

I have had 5 German cars: 1. 82 VW diesel rabbit 2. 1986 Merkur XR4Ti 3. 1995 Mercedes E320 4. 2006 VW Passat and 5. a 2004 VW Phaeton

None of those cars compared with the Lexus for the Luxury experience driving the car, and for servicing the car. None caused the pride of ownership the Lexus gave me. I sold it after 187,000 miles, and it's the one car I feel I should have kept.

I gave the Passat to my daughter, but every other German car I have owned I have sold with a sense of urgency, and felt only relief when I sold it. NO ONE CAN convince a lazy owner that a German car is worth the money. And though I wash my cars weekly, pay attention to maintenance, I don't like spending my weekends taking doors apart, etc, or spending huge sums of money to fix a German luxury Sedan that has EVERYTHING going wrong with it at 50K miles (For the Merkur, it started at 12K miles, but that was never really a luxury car).

So far my biggest complaints with the Genesis are (and I mentioned the first on this same thread earlier): 1. V6 Gas mileage is really NOT better than the V8 gas mileage. I based my decision to buy ultimately on the better in-city handling of the V6, and the superior gas mileage. Now I wish I had gone with the V8 as I do a lot of highway miles, and it's clear from this forum that the gas mileage from the V8 is at least equal to the V6 on the highway.

2. The leather of the driver's seat is stretched out after 17,000 miles, and I think this is too soon to look this way.

Really, that is it.

But this Genesis will have to make it to the mid 100K miles before it will come close to the esteem I felt for the GS400. Ultimately, the GS400 Lexus I owned was the LEAST EXPENSIVE OF ALL MY CARS, though in 1998 I paid $46K for it new (before taxes). This statement is made after summing initial costs, maintenance, and the cost of fuel use, as well as subtracting what I got for the car when I sold it. My V8 Lexus from '98 got better gas mileage (on the highway at 80 mph it did 24.5 mpg) than my 2010 V6 Genny (23.5-24 mpg at 80 mph).

If Lexus still sold a rear wheel drive sports sedan (with a real back seat, unlike the newer GS version) I would buy another in an instant. The gas mileage is superior, the maintenance minimal, and the dealer support soothing. (All of this based on my 1998-2007 experience with the GS.)

With due respect guys, as someone else has said in another thread somewhere (I think), if you wanted a boat that seems to float a few inches off the pavement you should have bought one -- don't expect to take curves like you're on rails, however. After having driven one of the best handling sports cars on the road for seven years, I believe Hyundai has struck a terrific balance between handling and road-feel with this car.

You missed what I was pointing out above. Our VW Passat - a car I don't think anyone would categorize as a float-a-boat (i.e. not a Caddy, not a Buick, etc) - achieved BOTH a pleasant ride and excellent handling characteristics, so it is possible without the level of compromise experienced in the Genesis. The Genesis simply gives up too much ride quality for handling. With the 2000 Passat as evidence, it is unrealistic to expect anything less in today's cars. I think you have set your expectations too low.

I just found out it's getting a 5.0 V8 in 2012 that's my biggest complaint.

It's primary launch in 2008/2009 Should've had that engine in it, then they would've really killed BMW, MB, and Lexus.

Funny really, I don't know why Lexus is ever really compared to those german manufacturers, it should be BMW, MB and Audi.

Lexus really isn't that serious compared to the germans.

That and the new exterior design of the 2012 Genesis, is god awful.
Same with the Lincoln MKS Twin Equus.

This Should be the 2012 Genesis

2009 or 2010 Exterior Design
5.0 V8 429BHP / 376LBS Torque - MPG 18/26 ( Most likely with new Motor )
CDC with VSM, ESC, TCS, EBD, ABS

(Inches Below)

Wheel : Base 119.9
Length : 203.1
Width : 74.4 (excluding mirrors)
Height : 58.7
Track (in, Front/Rear) : 63.8/64.1

Yes That's the Equus Exterior Dimensions, because the Genesis is a better looking vehicle and deserves more. The Equus isn't the flagship award winner, the Genesis is.

Don't fix what isn't broken, yes that pertains to the very smallest details even if only cosmetic. I've seen the vehicle so far myself, it's ugly. This new "facelift" is for the worst. Not a good choice and can only expect something such as from the former GM exterior Design Chief Phil Zak.

Funny I should mention, Joel who designed the genesis before it won N.A. Car of the Year in 09, he works for ford now, no wonder the taurus looks a littler familiar !

I'm a junior art director from the art institute in chicago, designing my own version of the Genesis, yep, after I saw that awesome anonymous grille up front with a nice looking rear end (aside from it's tail lamps), yeah I was sold over BMWs. Too bad it didn't have that 5.0 2 years ago, it would've killed every 7 Series V8 and S-Class V8 BMW and MB had to offer. The exterior designs do not need to change aside from the headlamps and tail lamps, and I am specifically talking about the rear end chrome !

Funny nobody has mentioned cupholders being so far back. My wife has to reach backwards to use them

The back-up camera

The back-up camera is very nice to have but provides a far shorter range of view than our Infiniti. You really can't use it to see if traffic is coming like in the Infiniti. Because the camera sits so far back on the vehicle compared to the drivers position it is a useful tool if pointed at a high enough angle to see down a parking lot, street or driveway. The Genesis camera is pointed down at such an angle it is only useful to make sure you're not hitting anything, but not if anything is coming that you might hit. Easy fix Hyundai. Re-point the camera up a bit.

Ha, there was a survey done a while back, asking what "Women" in particular look for most while shopping for new vehicles.

Over 70% of overall reports turned up, "Cup holders" as a primary feature of a car's interior for a female shopper.

once in a while interior lights will flicker. and no matter what i do, it will not go back to a solid light. my initial reaction was that the battery was dying so i rev the engine alot but it doesnt help, i also tried turning the lights off, and restart the car. I have to turn off the car for atleast like 20 mins to get it back to normal....

does anyone else have this problem?

This flickering light issue was repaired under warranty. There are other threads mentioning the problem, and it has nothing to do with the battery, but rather some circuitry under the panel where the lights are.

I had the problem fixed in the first three months of ownership, and there has been no recurrence.

:welcome:

Just a little niggle, but there should be independent day and night settings for the brightness of the map display. I passed a large park last night and the huge green blob lit up the entire car. A little wheel like the gauge brightness control would be ideal.

There is a setting Mine is set for night, always black

Do not have the car here so I can't tell you where but it is the rear right button

There is a brightness setting in the settings options in the DIS. I set mine much dimmer than the factory setting.

It also exists for those without the DIS (Prem/Nav package)......you can select to have daytime, nightime or automatically adjust.

There are no INDEPENDENT day-night settings. There is one brightness setting. It does go black at night, but try driving past a large park sometime with the whole display screaming green at you.

Even going to a non-map display is too bright at night to have it bright enough for me in the day time when I'm usually wearing sunglasses.

My complaint is that there is no separate adjustable setting for day and night. To set mine bright enough for daytime use means I would have to screw with the DIS every time I drive at night. This, I am not about to do unless I happen to be driving many miles in a single night.

I wouldn't object to something like a thumbwheel, but frankly the DIS is a pain in the a** for any temporary settings.

And why doesn't Hyundai provide either two more bolt holes for the bottom of the rear license plate or a bracket for it to sit in so the plate doesn't bounce off the paint every time I close the trunk? Plus the plate holder design should hold the plate PLUS DEALER FRAME off the paint. I installed spacers, but I'll bet most people don't. Again, to me this is design 101 type stuff.

For the next generation or 2012 models, I think the V8 Genesis should definitely have a true sport package. IMO, there's no sense having all that extra horsepower in a V8 and at least not giving us the option of having some true sport seats with extra lateral support, a three-spoke steering wheel, shift paddles, a rear spoiler, and perhaps some aluminum sport pedals. Those kinds of touches go a long way for the younger crowd.

I always get stainless steel bolts for the License Plates. I also tighten them very securely. I just tried closing the trunk - Very firm, and my plates did not move at all. No bouncing off the paint. And this is with just 2 bolts at the top. But mine are stainless steel and tightened very firmly. I have a 2011, so maybe Hyundai has already corrected this.

I have come to love my Genesis more and more over the last year that I have owned it. My other half owns a Goodyear Tire store and upon purchasing the Genesis he immediately looked into different tires. Decision was made two days later because of severe hydroplaning. We decided to go with a 17" Wheel and the Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread. We live in Idaho and can have rough winter months and relearning to drive a rear wheel drive has been interesting. During the winter months I have Nokian snow tires I run and love. I feel like the car drives and rides like a dream. I love the growl of power when I accelerate. My pet peeves are the trunk not being finished and water drips in after wash or rain and it doesn't open up far enough when my arms are full. My side mirrors seem to be just a couple inches too high and cause me to have a blind spot. I wish the car remained locked even after putting the car in park. (A feeling of security) People tell me when I use the blue tooth they can hardly hear me and sound like I'm in a tunnel. I continue to learn more about the car as I read these posts. Happy New Year to all!
