I have a 2012 3.8 with Premium. I like it and would likely consider another, however, I would need to see some changes to say I would buy it over the other cars in the various segments in which it competes. Last time I did not shop other vehicles. This time I will:

1. A steadier ride. While the ride issue has been beaten to death here, everyone's opinion is different on what makes ride quality good. For me the actual impact harshness on the 2012 (which admittedly I may be used to after 1.5 years) is not what bothers me. I can tolerate this. I would appreciate a little less body movement. The car needs to have a totally steady and locked down feel on the highway. I have no problem feeling the bump. I do not want the car upset by the bump. Since I drove a 2013 Azera as a loaner, I know Hyundai can improve in this area and other manufacturers do not seem to have this problem.

2. Slightly better seating comfort. This is not a make or break. The seats are pretty good but could use a bit more thigh support (really they need the extended thigh support from the top of the line Azera). Also, the telescoping wheel really needs to come out at least 1-2 inches further. Seat adjustment on the passenger seat also need to improve. No adjustable lumbar support or up and down adjustment make this very comfortable car less comfortable for passengers than it should be.

3. More reliable technology. The NAV unit seems to be a consistently frustrating item for many. I have come to terms with this and I think Hyundai is fixing the problems for the most part in each successive generation.

4. Better shifting 8 speed. Shifts very smooth on the way up, but even after a TSB fix, downshifts are slow. Azera showed me Hyundai can do better (although the 6 speed does not shift nearly as smoothly it is more responsive). I am not sure I would continue to tolerate an unresponsive transmission in the future.

5. Slightly better interior materials. For the price the materials are very good (and better than my wife's RX 350) but if they truly want to compete with E350 and 535, materials needs to get a little more solid. This would not prevent me from buying a 2014.

6. Quieter and more effective AC. Not a deal breaker but should be an easy fix.

7. Improved mileage. Highway MPG is great. Suburban mileage of about 15-16 sucks.

8. Price needs to be within 5% of the current car for a comparatively equipped vehicle. If they move it up much more than that they will lose customers. The purchase and dealer service experience is far from what you get from a luxury car dealership and there is still a lack of prestige (although not a lack of respect) for the Hyundai brand.

Here is what I want to stay:

1. Looks. I know they are changing. I like the current conservative, derivative styling. I think the Azera is not half bad looking but they need to upscale it a bit before they bring the new styling to market. If it looks like a Sonata I think they will lose customers.

2. Room, exterior size and trunk. Perfect.

3. Quietness.

4. Engine. The 3.8 is smooth, has a nice sound and power. No real need to change. If they do 3.3 turbo with a little more bottom end torque and city mileage I would not complain.

5. Solid feel. While there a more interior noises than you get in a Benz, the structure is solid. I like it.

What else would be make or break for you?

Not much, Selectable ride comfort with adjustable air suspension so we can have the best of both worlds. Blind spot sensors, Air conditioned seats all around including rear seats, Bluelink system that is reliable and finally, A turbo option on the Rspec bringing HP up about 150 for a nice 579hp on tap. :D

AWD.

Cooled Passenger Seat.

Adjustable Suspension

A Little more Thigh Support

Better Designed Trunk (it pours water inside the trunk when I open it...retarded)

FIX THE NAVIGATION/AMP PROBLEMS. Or at lease acknowledge them....

Something Stupid Fast in AWD for the R-Spec (Twin Turbo 5.0 comes to mind...at a premium of course).

I may have to skip a generation. Depends on the direction the styling will go - I'm certain the tech and performance aspects will be fine. But looks are what attracted me to the car in the first place. And it really can go either way based on the spy shots I've seen.

I may use up all my warranty before getting another Genesis. Time will tell.

for the most part the same things... but i'll add a few

Cooled Passenger Seat.

Adjustable Suspension , Works on the CTS-V and others...

A moderate amount more Thigh Support

Something Stupid Fast in AWD for the R-Spec (Twin Turbo 5.0 comes to mind...at a premium of course).

rear side window shades

Rear window smart glass ( might be an industry first )

manageable ESC (something like bmw would be desired)

factory rear monitors... hey i got kids !

LED lights everywhere - confirmed for 2014

analog clock

Quick shifting transmission with paddle shifters

louder factory exhaust on the Rspec model

more durable seats (leather is too easy to be wrinkled etc)

more reporting back of car systems (such as light failures, oil changes based upon driving conditions/time)

electronic and dip stick for oil checks

HUD - confirmed for 2014

folding rear seats

rear cup holders

redesigned door to eliminate the rain entering when opening (kinda like the trunk concern)

However given the current status of the 2012-2013 Genesis Rspec , Hyundai has done a great job with low maint, lifetime oils (cough), and quaility.
I cant see trading my 2012 in for a 2014... however if i had disposable income the main deciding factor would be the engine and it's starting to sound
like the 2014 will have the same engine that are currently used.

ppp

The OP's points mirror my opinions exactly. The car should be less bouncy, a bit more comfortable and have a more reliable electronic suite (Bluetooth, Nav, reliable amp et al).

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
i was ready to switch out of my 2009 genesis mainly due to suspension and driving feel. But after seeing the 2014, im gonna hold on to my 2009 trade it in as long as few things are fix:

- suspension, i know people have said late 2009 and up have the suspension fix, but man my 2009 is horrible.

- steering, no feedback at all, i come from driving bmw's so i am not used to this soft steering

- seats, need way better thigh support and sportier seats

- throttle, i haven't seen anyone complain about this before but i just can't get used to this weird power band. I know our cars have lots of hp (4.6) however its as if hyundai engineering didn't know what to do with all the power. Car needs to have more managed throttle so driver can control it better. Hard to explain.

- material, they need to use some better and higher quality material inside. Every from leather to plastic has a very cheap feel to it. Almost as if they need to add some weight and feel to the buttons.

- nav/tech, they also have to beef up their nav system and better integration with mobile devices (ios). System is so old school, comparing to other companies out there, our system feels like windows 3.1

- chrome, i know some of you guys love chrome, but personally i think chrome makes cars look so cheap. They need to introduce a shadowline type style package, which blacks out or remove bunch of the exterior chromes. Or even introduce a sport package or such to improve the look and make it more sporty.

I do have to say, i love the new look, love the grill and loving the lines.

I honestly don't have much complain with my genny aswell. Love it! plus the looks....I love it...and the 2014 not really my taste....even with all those upgrades I wouldn't just trade my "12 in a heartbeat...maybe in 5-6 or even 10 years later if my Genny is still strong I don't see why trade it.

i think the guys with '12+ genesis will have a much harder time justifying the upgrade to '14. '12+ looks so much nicer the the pre ones.

Not that I would be able to afford getting out of my 2011 but...

1. AWD
2. Better iPod interface
3. Rear fold-down seats (I don't believe that crap about structural integrity)
4. Better interior panel integrity - too many creeks and rattles
5. Cooled passenger seat
6. Lower driver seat positioning - I'm 6' 3"
7. Rear-seat 12V outlet
8. Factory rear-seat entertainment option (dual headrests)
9. Real wood paneling - bring back the wood steering wheel

You know you can do a coversion to the 12" right? My friends from korea have done this and it looks brilliant! :) shouldn't be too expensive to do it....cheaper than getting the whole 12" genny lol

Echoing the thoughts of others here:

1. Improved IPod interface. I want to be able to search for a song or an artist by name, via voice, a la Ford Sync, without having to slowly page through hundreds of pages of music
2. Seamless Bluetooth Audio Integration
3. Better NAV interface. Let me download a destination from my Android Phone (where I can search for, and find, destinations by voice and not use the crappy voice interface of the Genny)
4. Cooled passenger seat (I live in Texas, so no, this isn't frivolous. I consider it just as beneficial to me as AWD is for northerners)
5. Less "wandering" steering. I'm always making slight steering corrections. This was improved from 2010 to 2012, and could be improved some more.
6. Blind Spot warning instead of lane departure warning

I know many want AWD, and for the Northern Climates it's a necessity. In Texas however I don't feel I need it.

Optional AWD would be nice.

I almost forgot to say more RAM and a higher clock processor in the DIS computer. That thing is slow as hell!

Here is what the 2014 Genesis is getting.

1. More refined ride.

The new Azera and Santa Fe have seen improvements in their ride and w/ Hyundai Europe having a heavy hand in the development of the 2G Genesis, the ride should be both smoother and more sporty.

2. Better contoured/bolstered front seats - both the Azera and SF got better contoured/bolstered front seats, so it should also make its way to the Genesis (including things like a thigh extender for the driver's seat).

Still, it probably won't be enough for those wanting even more contouring/bolstering and Hyundai should really offer different seats w/ even more contouring/bolstering for the R-Spec.

3. Major overall of the nav/infotainment system - Hyundai had a display at CES showcasing their latest nav/infotainment tech, as well as added tech features like HUD, blind spot warning, swiveling headlamps, etc. on the KDM Genesis (the ? is how many of these will make their way to the USDM Genesis).

4. A pretty big upgrade in interior materials (not as nice as what's in the K9/Quoris, but getting a big bump over the Azera - which actually has better leather on its seats than the current Genesis).

5. Available AWD.

Likely going to get.

1. Cooled passenger front seat.

2. Adjustable steering and a sport mode for the suspension (tho, not going to get the adjustable air suspension).

As for powerplant and transmission upgrades, may have to wait until after the 1st year regarding the 10 spd AT that Hyundai is working on will make its way into the 2G Genesis at the start.

The powerplants will probably remained unchanged for the most part w/ the rumored TT V6 not likely to make it in until the refresh (but who knows? Hyundai is known for being able to make changes quickly).

There are rumors of Hyundai working on a FI Tau V8 (switching over to TT from supercharging) - and I wouldn't be surprised if we see a real performance variant of the Genesis sometime down the line.

Whatever the case may be, I agree that Hyundai needs to work on the programming for the AT, throttle and steering calibration (steering more akin to the Genesis coupe would be good).

1. AWD
2. Blind Spot Monitoring.
3. Fold down rear seats.
4. HUD (Would be nice)
6. Revamped NAV (With an easy “Store this location”)
7. FOBs with dual memory positions. (2 distinct memories FOBs)
8. Auto collision avoidance (Very popular technology)
9. Memory storage points for smart cruise. (Cruise1 35, Cruise2 70)
10. Available normal cruise as option.

As a 2009 owner, here is my list...

1.) Better Nav system/ipod and phone integration
2.) Cooled passenger seat, heated rear seats
3.) Heated steering wheel
4.) AWD
5.) Self closing trunk
6.) Better ride
7.) Blind spot monitoring / Lane departure warning system
8.) Front camera

If its the R-Spec, V8, 480hp, sport mode suspension, Brembo brakes, and whatever else that would make the new R-Spec compete with the true competition.

Coming from a 2012 V6 tech premium here is my shopping list:

1. Better front seats (the thigh support really is crap)
2. Drivers foot rest (2013 Sonata was more comfy to me as my foot actually fit)
3. Engine/Tranny upgrade (I loved the torque in 2013 Sonata 2.0T - no hesitation when pedal is mashed
4. Yes, cooled and up/down seat for passenger shouldn't even be a thought, should just be there
5. DIS is painfully slow when moving GPS between points, what's up with that?
6. The trunk...it leaks inside when raised, wtf
7. City mileage sux
8. HUD (I had it on my 1993 Bonneville and loved it)
9. Bigger tires out back, seriously (at least 275's)
10.The wing emblems should come stock
11.Cruise control should be able to stop the car and go in heavy traffic
12.There's no reason why they can't display the PSI in the tires individually like my RL used to do

get me all that with a turbo engine and I'll get rid of my 2012 in a heartbeat.
