  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

What's the right oil for my car?

I doubt that GF-5 will have a big impact on the full synthetic oils from companies like Mobil 1, Pennzoil, Castrol, etc, except those who are already not API certified like Amsoil (their oils are extremely robust, but have trouble meeting fuel efficiency standards for energy conserving formula designation even under GF-4). The oils designed to meet BMW, MB, and VW specs may also have some challenges meeting greater fuel efficiency standards. Might also effect Mobil 1 EP (Extended Performance) and Castrol Edge oils also.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Mobil 1 AFE (Advanced Fuel Economy) line of synthetics already meet GF-5 specs.

It won't make a huge difference to the over all synthetic market, but it will set a bar for new cars going forward. It remains to be seen which oils already comply but my suspicion is some of the 0W-XX oils may already be compliant.

Going to get my first oil change (first one free). Two dealers have suggested 5W-20 Valvoline synthetic blend. I would have thought a higher viscosity for the higher temps in central Florida would be better (10W-30 as per manual). Any thoughts?

Valvoline Syn blend is a great choice, and 5W-20 is the preferred grade. Don't need a 10W-30 oil in this car. The manual states the 10W-30 oil can be used if other is not available.
