I use oils, other than M1. I use mostly Group IV Synthetics, however right now, I have a Group III Synthetic in my car, and it loves it.

FWIW, I've been using Castrol Edge in my 3.8l Gen since it turned 1 year old. No clue if it's the 'best' synthetic oil out there for the money, but so far so good.

I agree. BITOG is an interesting forum, but would totally confuse someone who was looking for good fast advice, since there is major disagreement on almost everything.

If I'm Joe six pack, and I go on that site to get some guidance, I ask 1 question and get 20 answers. My response to the average reader would be to go for the 5W-20 or 5w-30 like the manufacturer specifies. Not only for the specs, but it's pretty easy to find at any auto parts store.
For someone who is a little more of an enthusiast and willing to hunt or pay extra, and probably changes his own oil and does some basic maintenance himself. I would go for the 0w-20 or 0w-30 fuel economy formula. The thickness and flow rates on those at cold start up (which is where you see the majority of engine wear), is far superior. The colder the climate you live in the more important it is. But I'm sure 100 guys will disagree with me.

I drive mostly stop and go putting on about 5000 to 6000 mile per year. Would changing oil once per year under these condition be appropriate?

I asked about M1 and my dealer said 80 bucks. M1 EP is a specialty oil, so the likelihood of them carrying this is pretty low. For what you describe changing the oil once a year with M1 EP 5W-20, will be fine.

Sure, no problem, it's very confusing I know. Everyone is an expert. I don't claim to be anything other than another fish in a very big pond. When in doubt, follow the manufacturers recommendations, and you will be sound as a pound. (If you do it yourself, don't overfill, that's the most common mistake.)

5000 to 6000 miles per year, and once a year oil changes with a good synthetic like M1 EP 5W-20 is fine, but check the Hyundai maintenance schedule to make sure you comply with warranty requirements regarding time interval between changes (regardless of miles driven). I would not go that long with a conventional oil (regardless of miles driven).

One year and 5-6K should be fine, for stop and go with M1 extended, but if you want to be sure send some oil to be analyzed. Blackstone is the place I see recommended on oil forums.
